The pinnacle of the triathlon pyramid is the Ironman World Championships, taking place on Hawaii, on the 2nd weekend of every October. This race is not only famed for attracting the very best amateur and professional Ironman athletes on the planet, but also the unforgiving weather conditions that this island dishes out to athletes year upon year.
However, there is another factor about this race that gets everyone talking each year... and that is the course itself. So today we are going to delve into some of the crucial aspects of this iconic course and discuss - in our opinion - their impact on how the racing can unfold

I think you guys are correct. That section is the toughest part of the bike course. Hills + winds + heat/humidity. But the view is very pretty.

its hot and humid. age groupers have trained hard to qualify and a lot show up in Kona overtrained.
"At no other point during the Hawaii Ironman does this column of athletes resemble as much of a death march" - hahahah brilliant!

Nice job on pronunciations guys, and those are some killer glasses!
"Energy Lab" .... a breeze wafting through those palms, I see. I think I'd take that over staying out on the Queen K lava fields.
If it wasn't for the world champs, I don't think a lot of AGs would race this. Non-wetsuit swim, bike ride out and back on a highway, high heat and humid run, and doesn't even look that scenic.

Kona it's only a name that bring lot of money - try BlackLake in Montenegro if you wanna try a hard race.
My dad did this
1995 was going 20MPH @ mile 20 saying out loud this is easy , then hit a wall of wind hit me , never saw my big chain ring again . Now I know how to spin into the wind .🌬🌬 Being from Florida didn't think it was that hot

Wait, there are drafting penalties in triathlon?

I assume you are new to the sport, so i am going to explain it to you. There a two different type of races in triathlon: draft legal races (races in which athlets are allowed to draft, while cycling and there are no penalties). These races are typically the shorter ones. Ironman and Ironman 70.3 are examples of non draft legal races. Athletes can get a drafting penalty if they get closer to an athlete in front than twelve meters.these penalties are typically 5 mins long.

@@ElidioMarquina no plenty of amateurs race it....its expensive to get there but so is everything else these days....you do need to be fast and that is the highest barrier to entry IMO
