    i looked up the Pisces III rescue and, horrifyingly, the margin of rescue was even smaller: the rescuers got to work on opening the submersible the second they found it, and by the time they got it open, Pisces III had only 12 MINUTES of oxygen remaining. spine-chilling.

    A fun little DP note - DP is why, if you drive your car into a body of water, you need to roll the window down and let the car fill almost completely with water before trying to open the door. The water pressing against the dry car makes it almost impossible to open & you'll tire yourself out before you get a chance to escape, but once the water's on both sides of the door it's no longer DPing you & you can open the door normally. **The More you know**

    Yeah Mythbusters did an episode testing this in a car and a swimming pool and if you fight your instinct to panic and wait it out you're more likely to survive. But also if you have something to break your car windows that works too

    Has anyone seen that "delta p" video? It's been here for many years, but for some reason a few years ago it came up in everyone's recommended feed. It was just weird, very dry tone, unclear who it's for (but it's gotta be part of an instructional/educational program for commercial divers, though it's still not the right tone, idk).

    If you were still curious - a change in the volume of a container of a gas will change the temperature of the gas because of the Ideal Gas Law Pressure volume and temperature are all related. So changing the volume of the container of gas (or shitbox death trap submersible full of oxygen) compresses the air so fast and so hard that the temperature skyrockets. The oxygen reaches its ignition temperature and the air catches fire Deeper dive - pressure is a measure of the molecules of gas in a container bumping around, knocking into each other and pushing against the sides of the container. So yes, it is basically friction

    It sounds like PH Nargeolet joined Oceangate because he thought his experience would allow him to spot warning signs and call off a dive before things went wrong... but he was also fatalistic in a "we'll die instantly if anything goes wrong, which wouldn't be too bad" sort of way. I've heard people who knew him say that his wife's death had dealt a serious blow to his mental health, which would explain the fatalism but makes his part of the story even sadder.

    compressing a gas (or any substance) causes it to increase in temperature because the molecules being compressed pick up kinetic energy, and basically more energy means higher temperature. diesel engines don't have spark plugs like petrol engines because the heat from compressing the fuel air mixture in the cylinder is enough to ignite the fuel

    If I remember my high school chemistry right, it's more that when the molecules are closer together, so they collide more. In an enclosed space, temperature, pressure, and volume always have to multiply to the same number unless gas is added or displaced

    Binoculars and lifeboats wouldn't have saved more than a few lives in Titanic, especially not binoculars as those are only used to help identify something you've already spotted from a distance. They were still launching lifeboats in Titanic's final moments, so they didn't have time to launch more. The combination of the clear weather, the ship's speed, and the failure to heed ice warnings is what doomed Titanic.

    You can buy third party controllers for consoles. Also, the Bluetooth transceiver was interfacing with the computer on board the submersible, not the mother ship. It's a terrible design any way you look at it. All of this so some rich boy who was told how special he was every day could do a thing that requires expertise and shared knowledge. I'm just sad he killed a bunch of people instead of just himself with his hubris.

  • @Spamhard

    @Spamhard

    I'm pretty sure Stockton had to call them 'mission specialists' becauses there's laws in place about tourists being taken down to the Titanic. Like it can't be a tourist venture, so he relabelled and pretended this was research with 'mission specialists'. It's not the payers who demanded they get called that. Either way, I still have no sympathy for people dropping the price of a home (in some places) just to see a sunken ship through a tiny murky window.
