I have an example of my sunk cost thing I love to crochet and I wanted to try knitting by makinh a sweater so I spent alot of money for yarn and drove to so many Walmarts but when I was halfway through it I was sad tired and I had no motivation so I stopped and then I made a rug out of the yarn and I got a headband out of it so I feel better about my skills in crochet
i'm a simple woman. Sarah posts I click. then proceed to watch 5 of her other videos after.

As a seamstress and mushroom cultivator, this is the hobby crossover content I neeeeed. Also, as an FYI to everyone, mushrooms don’t have roots like plants do. They have a fluffy white substance called mycelium, so the dress is even more appropriate!

Until she add those things around the edges. But I do think the face mushroom would be way better. And wicked makers here on KZread made an awesome version of them.

If you're into pokemon, their eveelution designs look very fun to cosplay :) Or any of her character design, honestly x). She also likes pink and Japanese fashion (Decora kei to be precise), so I think you might like her work in general!

I love dollightfull’s work! Rachel Maksey’s mushroom hat video is a good jumping point for mushroom hat lore and appreciation as well! ☺️
It’s always so fun to dress up as a deadly mushroom that could kill you :)
To add to the hat, I would have glued on less cap mushrooms and done them in small clusters and not all the way around, and then added grass and moss to the top and then roots dangling out of the bottom, there seemed to be too much "dirt" showing, but still a valiant effort! My cost sunk cosplay was my Steven Universe OC, I ended up still getting it done but needed to purchase a custom petal skirt for it. Now I've gone and started to turn it into a new outfit, repurposing some pieces and tossing other pieces all to make it into an Autumn fairy ;w;
@lulumccoolio3111

Yes!!! I was also thinking more around the edge like in the concept art, and some moss. It would look GREAT with moss. I also feel like the dress is really cute, but is too bright and nice looking to match with the dirt/scary look of the hat.
The mushroom hat seems like it could have been something out of a kids craft/costume book from the 70s/80s even. I think mushroom hats have been around for a looong time but I appreciate your quest for the origin!

May Gibbs drew mushroom hats on babies in the 1910s, and I don't think she would have been the first to do so.
For a deep dive on mushroom hats, the first instance I can find in still surviving art that is widely available, it's "Children of the forest" from 1910. Look at the moms mushroom bonnet and tell me its not the cutest shit ever 👀

Hi hello! Aspenwitch here! I don’t think it sounded like you were coming after anyone at all! People have parallel ideas all the time and new ideas all the time and can you imagine how many never even make it to social media to begin with! It’s actually really exciting! It’s so cool that you reached out and shared my costume videos in this video! After we spoke briefly I was even reflecting like huh where -did- I get the idea for this? And I remembered my friend @hellofaerie did a red spotted corset and wing set just before I made my hat, we had the aesthetic on the brain and hopped from project to project from there! I remember in 2018 mostly using the term “toadstool” too and I don’t think that got trendy at all haha!
Kinda cute that your sister knew what kinda mushroom you were referencing and still was like "nope, don't see it" 😆

Thank you grandma for the antique hand me'd downs that last for centuries and are always reliable.
Hi ! I'm a french subscriber. And it can be a very strange compliment but you have a very sweet, fluid and understandable way to talk which REALLLY help me in general to understand others youtubers. You have a clever way to explain the process of the cosplay in a interesting way and good explanation. Thank you and hace a nice day !
I keep forgetting that you're doing this full time now, and I'm always surprised about how fast you get videos out. Even a few months ago I always found myself saying "another video already??" You're an absolute machine!!! Cosplay inspo 💪💪 Ps. Thank you for the hand-me-downs, grandma
This is such a cool project, even if you didn't end up loving it! Ironically, if I remember correctly, Dollightful's inspiration for that mushroom hat doll was because she ended up sinking a lot of time and effort into a different doll that didn't turn out the way she wanted it to, so she tried a similar (but tweaked) idea and ended up with that finished product!! Regardless of if you try again on the hat, I think it's great that you turned this into a lesson for yourself. Super inspirational!!!
I loved the history section! Mushroom-hat people are also in fantasia and multiple plays & ballets, even if people thought of it originally it's certainly possible they didn't realize they've been influenced by these! Sometimes inspiration sources cant exactly be remembered 😅
I don’t know about everyone else but not only do I learn how to sew, but I can also enjoy your videos as my evening show ( I swear whenever you upload I get my snacks and watch on the tv 😭)
Hearing someone who I look up to say that's its ok to not like something you made makes me feel a lot better about some of my sunk projects. Thanks for sharing this with us
Everytime I was your videos I feel like I'm getting a nice history lesson about cosplay, fashion, and cons!! I truly love them
I'm making a mushroom hat with a diameter of 88 centimetres right now for my first cosplay ever. I'm only at the base and the con is in 40 days but I hope I'll make it! I was so exited to watch this video, you definitely slayed this cosplay!

You con do it 😜 some unsolicited advice: get the big stuff done first and rough. You can always go back and add details later. Nothing makes you look more incomplete than a beautifully crafted top and and then some half finished bottom. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the sword is, if the outfit was made the night before it makes it look like you bought it.
I was crocheting with my dog in my lap while I watched this video and I thought it might bring you some joy to know that every time you said "bone" or "boning" my dog's ears perked up and the tip of her tail wagged just a little bit ❤
Honestly so many plants inspire fairy core outfit ideas. I really want to make myself a Acorn hat this Autumn.🍂
I grew up reading Elsa Beskow's story books, and there's a loooot of mushroom hats there :D It's probably been around for longer than people think, but it's fun to see it being reinvented in many ways
One I love it, two can we all appreciate how incredibly adorable your sister is and how badass her outfit for the renfaire was?!

Thank you! Ill tell her that, she's actually wearing the first corset I ever made, its always fun to have that one see the light of day haha
To be fair, the stays came out so nice, you make stays and corsets look so effortless and the binding looks so neat
I think it turned out really cool! Maybe adding some more fibrous bits of dyed rope spreading over the surface and dangling off the edge might tie it together a wee bit more? Make it look a bit more like a single organism taking over those dirt mound, coming out of the ant
Thank you so much for sharing this! Making is not *only* about success, it's about learning experiences and about learning to let go of perfection. Embracing the possibility of "failure" makes me feel like I'm allowed to take big swings. I'm allowed to go into a project that isn't "safe" and "simple". I'm allowed to challenge myself and I'm allowed to grow form my "failures" ❤ Ps: your sister seems so nice! And you look like you had a lot of fun at the Ren faire! 🎉
My 12 year old daughter loves watching your videos, sewing and crafting, and she wanted for me to tell you that you are the reason she wanted to pursue sewing. Here's a little message from her. "Dear Sarah Spaceman, I absolutely love watching your videos! And wish nothing but the best for you and your channel. I just wanted to say, thank you for doing what you do! Thank you for helping me on my cosplay journey! You're the reason I wanted to be a cosplayer! I'm also working on my first cosplay as your reading this! (it's a gender bent Magolor from Kirby if you were wondering) And I want you to know that no mater what you think of your cosplays I'll always love them! Love from me to you, have a nice day! (p.s. You could add moss and vines to the hat. just a tip😁)"
Absolutely living for the dress and stays!! The coffee dye method was a wonderful idea, and I might use it myself....I'm making a dress inspired by the Charmed Book of Shadows and I think it'll be a good method to get that "old page" look!! And thanks for the graphic on Flat Felled seams-it's a suuuuuper common method for adding boning channels in corsets and I've never been able to wrap my smol brain around it 😅😅
Not only are you great at sewing, you’re also very entertaining. Your videos are very fun to watch ❤️ And thank you, grandma!!
It's inspiring to see somebody who Never Seems To Miss, actually miss. How very human. I love the concept and the vision, your initial doodle is wonderful!!
seeing Sarah hit 110K makes me so happy because if anyone deserves it, she does
The binding explanation is the absolute ✨best ✨ I have ever seen!
Love the mix of design, sewing/construction, and research in these videos
I really like this costume and I think the hat is super cute !! I think it just has a lot of dirt (?) You could try to fill it up with more mold or "veins". I have also seen a lot of people use foam spray (The stuff people use to fill up walls) to make the mushroom shape for the clickers. So if you feel like adding more to the hat, you could try that ??

Although I don't make cosplay, the feeling of not feeling satisfied with a project is something that hits me the most because I'm still a beginner and my perfectionism makes me very frustrated. I'm glad this video included your frustration and your feelings because it helps me to remember that I sew for fun, to have fun in the outfits I make. Thank you!
This has inspired me to make a creepy mushroom costume, oh my gosh. Am I leaving for MomoCon in 15 days? Yes. Do I want a creepy horror mushroom costume? Also yes.
When your sister came on, I was like did she dye her hair again lol good family genes. Also, thank you grandma and all those who came before her and passed their machines down!
I remember seeing mushroom hats on deviantart back in the 00s. My obsession with mushrooms hasnt changed much.

your abilities are very impressive to me and you've greatly inspired me to make my own cosplays

Ello! Just here to say that I had a dream last night where I was at Anime NYC and it had a super big Five Below store inside of the con and i met Sarah in there buying bobbi pins for her strawberry miku cosplay that she was wearing. I’m going to Anime NYC in November and I’m currently working on sewing my cosplay for it. Sarah inspired me to make the cosplay and start a new and exciting project like this. I always have her videos on in the background while I sew :) I hope you know how much you inspire me, you’ve really made me want to start doing way more things with my skills and cosplays so thank you for introducing a more exciting view to my life . Love you, queen Sarah Spaceman
I realy apreciate the animation for the french seam, you made it look so easy. I do not saw and I am not a cosplayer but I realy enjoy your videos just for the chill and cosy vibes and the beautiful garments. ✨️
Best way to end my day after a long work shift! I always learn something from your videos (the bias tape with the stays blew my mind).
Your videos never fail to inspire me- I am a creative by nature and sewing is one of my favorite hobbies, but it’s always so daunting for me. I know that the only way to improve is by making mistakes, but hearing you talk about it in this video really made a difference for me. I always get so inspired by your videos, but this time around I’m really eager to give my best shot at making something. Thank you so much for sharing this project and getting into the topics you did. It really put a lot of things into perspective for me!
Between you and Kamui, I can make anything! I love watching the historical seamstresses but I feel like I learn so much practical sewing from you. Like from start to finish I followed your corset video and go it done in about 5 hours. My mind is blown!!!
I really love the stays! And it's been so helpful how much you explain in your videos. I'm doing my first serious project and have for the first time been patient enough to make a mockup (finished today), and It turned out so nice that I'm gonna make it into its' own piece. That wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't learned so much from you. Thank you! And also: thanks, grandma. ^^
Bless you for being aware of the thrift sizing problem and trying to buy in your size 🙏

Love how your outfit came out, Keep up the great work✨ Thank you Grandma💖
Your videos always put me to sleep and I have to watch them like 8 times to learn anything, this is a massive compliment
I love that you shared this process, it's something that isn't often shown on social media! Not every project is a winner and that's okay, you get the experience and learn to do things differently or learn new skills from those "failed" projects. I remember when I started sewing/crafting my own cosplays seriously I made a Marth (Fire Emblem) cosplay and I sunk so much time and effort into it as a wee beginner crafter, only to realize I hated the way I looked in the cosplay at the end. I wore it to one convention and then never again, but I learned so many valuable skills from that one ambitious build.
lets goooo sarah upload !!! i really appreciate your work and have been binging your videos after i found you, you're a big inspiration
I love Dollightful ! She does custom dolls and there all so prettyyyyyyyy ! I think some of her designs are in my dream cosplay pile (her eeveelution, notably)
Thank you for posting this even if you consider it failure! I think it turned out really cute. Although, it's nice to see not everything goes the way you originally planned. I recently did a cosplay for a con this past weekend and ended up having to give up on making the shirt for it due to time constraints and it just not working. I bought a plain t-shirt to wear instead and people still knew who I was cosplaying as so I felt way better about my failure. I still plan on finishing the shirt at some point but I was glad I stopped when I did and went with a backup plan. So I totally understand that sunk cost. I REALLY wanted that shirt to work but if I stayed up all night to finish it while still not liking the way it looked, I would have been so exhausted and frustrated that I don't think I would have had as much fun. I can't wait to see if you do a TotK cosplay!
im so happy you’re finally getting the following you deserve :D

That triumphant thrusting of kettlecorn in the air. The hat was a bust but the corn was there to console you, kettle corn never disappoints!
"Skirts, pockets, boobs" -- you just named all of my favorites. Sarah, you really are my favorite youtube channel these days! Can't wait to run into you at a Con someday and nerd out over the sewn details in our cosplays. Edit: I did want to mention that I just made a structured bodice for a gown that my bff is wearing in a local fashion show & I used a smooth (and still breathable) heavy drapery fabric as the structural layer -- it works beautifully! Additional Edit: What if you made a little fascinator style ant with giant cordys coming out of it's body? I think the scale may help too :) As it is, I still like it and those stays -- especially the embroidery -- are gorgeous.
these videos are so addictive!! love the peter pan colar every time it comes up
I think about 70% of my art projects and costume projects end up in the “I hate this” pile in my closet. When I reach the end of a project and realize I don’t like the result I usually get super pumped up to make something even better next.
I think this still turned out pretty cool! I was working on a renfair costume design that’s supposed to be “fairy crawls out of a swamp, sees fancy dressed humans, goes “I wanna try that! Looks fun!” and proceeds to put together an outfit of swamp things” And I have been having a lot of trouble planning the hat, as I have zero experience making those from scratch, but this hat’s foam-and-fabric base looks like it would work really well for what I’m trying to do! And would be about my skill level! Just probably with a bunch of little plants, and a stump as the center. And a cattail sticking out instead of a feather. I’m gonna try that out once I’m done with my current sewing project and have some free time again! 😊
thank you so much for showing, that not every project is going to be the best thing one has ever done ♥️
I just finished watching all your videos and I loved them all. Your beautiful cosplays put a smile on my face and I love your video quality, editing and graphics. Great job and I can not wait to see what you do next. 🥰🥰
Thanks for sharing this! It's fun to see your process and hear your thoughts even when (part of) the end product isn't what you wanted. I love that you brought up the sunk cost fallacy and how the reality of making means that not everything works the first time, and that's ok. I think it leads to some fun discussion in the comments as well, I love seeing the different approaches folks suggest, whether it's emphasizing things from the context of the game, or mushrooms/cordyceps/bio elements, general design, or some other angle.
I just recently found your channel and its awesome! Keep up the good work
I loved how the whole outfit you wore looked, and it seems like you had a blast

Everything you make is perfect!
A new Sarah vid right when I was about to quit sewing my cosplay?? Miracle?? I really love your videos and I hope your experience as a full-time creator is a positive one. I personally love the hat!! I find it really nice that you chose a different type of mushroom that only the cool kids would get hehe but I understand the feeling.. thank you for sharing the ups and down of your process with us
Thanks for making my day I get home from school to a new video! keep it up :D
A Sarah upload is exactly what i needed rn 🥲
definitely was gonna be an uphill battle to make a mushroom hat when the fungi doesn't have as distinct a cap!! although this did make me want a mushroom cap with highly-conical mushrooms that would come down over the face
I love the way you edit tbh
I have taken the sunk cost with composite edits and it is SO heartbreaking, and sometimes you just have to walk away for a hot minute before your brain can tackle it again. So I feel this, but that ant is the cutest bean and I love him. O_O
Your sister is awesome trying SO hard to get it but also be honest. And thank you for highlighting the sunk cost issue when it comes to making, because it's so often a thing and so rarely talked about. Mine was a piece of embroidery (that was meant to be part of a much bigger project) that would have been fine if I had not started adding more complication to it. It went wrong in so many ways, but the stand out was the cursed rabbit that was done twice and just got more cursed... Oh - and the "how I would do it" that no one EVER asks for. I think adding in some nicely creepy vines and leaves to give a context that pulled it out of cake territory would be fun, and would add more texture.
omg!! I love both you and Dollightful! It's so wild seeing her get referenced in one of your videos hehe ^^
I am always happy when you upload and I always learn something and always think it’s amazing xx
