    I learned from WithWendy that brocade is a fabric that falls into the categories of “serge immediately after cutting” and “avoid at all costs if you don’t own a serger.”

  • @suzusparkles

    @suzusparkles

    The worst part even if you serge it an entire section of the serged part can just randomly fall off so I’d just put it into category “avoid at all costs if you’d like to keep your sanity” 😭

    It takes time, but use clear school glue on the edges and let it dry to stop it from fraying while you work on it. The school glue washes out, unlike fray check which stays crispy and is painful if it rubs against your skin.

    The other options are French Seams or Fray Check. Basically bind the seams no matter what.

    This is super helpful to know! I have a huge Sterling silver clasp from a handbag that belonged to my great grandmother. I've been wanting to make a purse to fit it and was thinking a silk brocade would be really special.

    I'm cosplaying since 2008 and it's absolutely fascinating how the simplest project are becoming a nightmare to make, because the less you have to do, the more attention you put into the details. Also pro tip- for fabric like the gold one you've used- starch in the spray works magic, because it keeps in check everything.

    Frieren was the first cosplay I ever made by hand and it´s somehow very encouraging to see that Sarah struggled with the same parts as me. I went to wear this cosplay to MAG-C because I wanted to meet Yaya and two days before she posted her Frieren and I had the same reaction. But when I went to talk with her she told me that she also struggled with the gold trim on Frieren, so it seems like we were all suffering

    Tip for brocade, chiffon, organza and pretry much any poly fabric is to run it thru a flame after cutting. You have to be a little careful with brocade because of the loose threads, but it works wonders. I keep a lighter and tealight candle in all my sewing kits just for polyester fabrics.

    Ooooooh something I found really helpful when making bias tape out of badly behaving brocade, get yourself some spare satin bias tape the size you need and tack the brocade stripe directly to it (close to where the iron fold is) then run the whole strip through a bias tape maker (or just fold the already visible crease) then press it as hot as you can, the tape will keep your brocade nice and even, then just release the tacks carefully and it’s all good to use! 🥰

    Nothing like just casually enjoying one of Sarah's videos to come to find out I've been sewing bias tape wrong T_T . Also yeah! No comparisons! I think your costume is great as a close 1:1 for the anime. During animation, characters have to be simplified a bit since they're drawn so much soz you can't have really gaudy textures typically. Which also leads into cosplayers expanding upon those simplified designs and fabrics in various different ways.

    This may be a weirdly personal share, but this video really came at the best time for me. I've been having such a hard time creating again. Cosplay use to be a huge part of my life and I've almost started to...resent it? Pretty weird burnout for sure! But this makes me want to do a cozy, simple cosplay now. Your last sentiment is sticking with me. "The only person I should be comparing myself to is me."

    This turned out adorable!! I'm sorry it ended up taking waaayyy more time than anticipated, but imo it's always worth the effort to have a comfy cosplay in your wardrobe.

    I made my first sewing project from what I learned from this channel! I made a ruler sheath for my drawing rulers! I really enjoyed making it.

    Such a great message at the end! Especially in the cosplay community where there's often so much competitive attitude, jealousy and gatekeeping.. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others. Be proud of your accomplishments, take inspiration in others, uplift fellow cosplayers.

    There are so many useful tips in this! I usually make things with buttons because zips are such a pain but I am definitely going to try the invisible zip technique you showed.
