I Made a "Merlin Monroe" Costume *forgive me lol*

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Listen, when a good pun appears in front of you, you MUST seize the opportunity. When I saw the words 'Merlin Monroe', not only did I have a hearty chuckle and knee slap, but I knew that I had to bring it to life.
So alas, combining Marilyn Monroe with Merlin, this creation was born.
I REGRET NOTHING.
Anywho, please enjoy this journey of boiling living room temperatures, endless fabric fraying and horrible sunburns.
LOVE YA!

I was looking to see if anybody else aside from me had immediately fallen in love with and happily adopted that particular wonderfully quirky neologism!! 😆 It's giving definite shades of the Aussie slang for Speedos ("banana hammock" or "budgie smugglers") 😂 Heheh yeah, I'd have to say Rachel and Ariel (of Hazariel Designs) are perhaps the costubers who I feel are most "approachable" in terms of coming up with truly crazy ideas and having relatable mishaps along the way? 😋 Although Morgan Donner's "shenanigan pants" are still one of my v fave designs in terms of madcap creativity & general coolness!

Not sure if anyone in the comments already recommended this, but pinking shears are your friend when dealing with fray-crazy fabric. They cut in a zig-zag and makes it harder for the weave to unravel.

If you are ever in the mood to torture yourself with that fabric again, a small tip. A heated craftknife - aka a woodburner with an exacto blade tip does wonders for cutting it out and sealing your cut lines in one move by fusing that edge. I usually work over sacrificial cardboard with it because it will melt my cutting mat, occasionally I'll do a silicone mat but those can be cut by the blade itself and I don't like damaging them in that way. I do keep a silicone mat nearby so I can set the tool down safely while it's hot.

  • @Amelia-pp4wm

    @Amelia-pp4wm

That does sound safer than my approach, which is to light a candle and then slowly pass the cut edge through the heat column to melt the cut edges so they fuse. It's not super precise, but it does feel satisfying 😅

Not even a joke, I would 1000% love to hear you sing more. I love music from the 50's and think you have the most beautiful voice so well suited to the era. Love the dress too of course, always entertaining to watch your creations.

This is one of my new favorite reveals. I went from "Wow she looks a lot Marilyn" to "Oh my gosh I can't stop laughing because of the beard" SO fast 🤣😍 Thank you for bringing us joy Rachel. ALSO - put coconut oil on your sunburn and it'll heal super fast.

I love it when a new Rachel video comes out on a day when I want to get Sewing done, really motivates me and helps me be a little more okay with the fact that sometimes, it doesn't go to plan 😂 loved this though, she is flawless and amazing and the itchiness of the fabric was worth it's magical abilities ❤

I think the bodice needs to be gathered more at the top and bottom, thats why it's so weirdly balloony. That and then ironed in place would keep that volume less unruley

This dress feels like the 'dressy' version (pun intended) of his blue robe in "Sword in the Stone"! 😆 As another commenter suggested, it's very "Merlin does Pride", and I love that gorgeous iridescent fabric (albeit nowhere near skin, yikes! Scratchy!!)

Another Rachel classic! A tip on the bulky gathering: your gathers will lay much flatter and give a less cupcakey skirt if you make them smaller. I love gathering by hand, and I make my stitches about 1/4” wide. Looking at those technique, I’m guessing your gathers verge on 1/2”, which makes them bulky, unable to lay flat, and more likely to have pieces of the skirt get stuck in the seam distorting the skirt further ❤️

Thank you for sharing some wisdom! I too struggle with handling gathers in a way that turns out even minimally flattering, esp around waistline & bust, so knowing what to try is a big help! 🙏

Thanks for modeling good crafty self care with the fancy mask. Also, thanks for continuing to do fun projects which aren’t out of reach for casual crafters. You do it faster, and invest the time in the finishing touches, but it doesn’t require a hundred hours and a sewing machine that costs as much as a car.

So cute! Seeing your little sunburn makes me want to remind everyone to please wear sunscreen and reapply as needed. I am battling melanoma at 43 years old and I think back to the sunburns over the years that didn't seem like a big deal at the time. Stay safe everyone ❤

Sorry to hear, hope you are getting good treatment & healing quickly! And completely concur... With climate change even our winter sun seems to be getting a lot more intense here, and I've been trying to get into the habit of automatically applying anytime I'm out gardening etc. Highly recommend hat and sunglasses or tinted spectacles too - a lovely older lady I knew once had to have a melanoma removed from her EYE and the very concept of that has always horrified me!! 😬

I love all you do- and please! Buy an organic compounds filter for your respirator. You are using dust filters. They are not sufficient for such hazardous chemicals. Everytime you pull it out it gives me a cringe. Please protect your lovely self and your precious lungs. - a professional carpenter/painter

Yes!! And also, please always step outside when using spray fix! If there's one thing i learned from art classes, it's that stuff is toxic AF. Do not breathe it directly or let it contaminate your indoor air quality.

With that respirator on, you sound like you're doing some deep sea dressmaking, and I'm here for it. The dress is the the perfect mashup of Marilyn's vavavoom and cosmic magic. And the beard? Just the right amount of freak show to complete the look.

Thick cotton lining fabric a 100% necessity for it to come anywhere near skin, I reckon!! 😵‍💫 The colour-changing fabrics are gorgeous, but yeah, weaving in any metal or plastic threads basically results in wearing one of those dishwashing scrub-pads next to your body... 😭 The chafing!!
