I have as much respect for Jack Nicklaus as you could possibly have. But when you look at all of the stats in the special, you cannot say Jack is the goat just because he has three more majors. As much as majors mean to an overall career, it is not the only metric to be considered the GOAT. From weeks at number one, to consecutive cuts made, to the amount of seasons with five or more wins, to his overall win percentage to tournaments played, I just can’t see that there is a question that Tiger is the greatest, most dominant golfer to ever play the game.

Sappy comment incoming: I started watching golf with my grandfather more than 25 years ago. Watching Tiger grab victory after victory was something we rooted for together. My poppop is no longer with me, but I know when Tiger is playing, he's watching from above with me, and we're cheering him on together to this day. Tiger is the reason I love the game of golf and gave me a bond with my poppop that transcends life. I may not be a great golfer myself, but I always make sure I give a big Tiger fist pump every time I make a nice putt! Keep at it big guy! We're always here cheering you on!

👏👏Tiger is the reason that I started playing the game. I always tuned in to watch Tiger play even though I never picked up a club growing up. Growing up kids like me never dreamed of playing golf because of the stigma it had of being a rich white man sport. Tiger broke that barrier. Seeing a guy dominate with my complexion and ethnic background was an inspiration. So the moment that I could afford clubs came I saved up my money bought some clubs off craigslist and began to grind like I did learning to play basketball or boxing. Years later, I'm passing the love of the game to my son.

he was well on his way to going well beyond the century mark in wins, and winning 24+ majors in his career until he messed himself up. he was better off staying single. even with those injuries, he would have the majors record and 100+ wins. Within the first 10 years, he amassed 46 wins (10 majors), more than mickelson has done his entire career. that's unlikely to be duplicated in our lifetimes. And winning four straight majors (though it's not the calendar slam, as he finished -4, 6 shots back of singh in the 2000 masters, tied for 5th), i doubt we'll see that again. sadly, jack's majors record will never be broken, and i don't see tiger breaking the tie with sam snead.

I feel really fortunate to have started playing golf a few years before Tiger turned pro. I got interested in this sport the year prior to 'Long' John Daly's win at the '91 PGA, as the golf world gained an unlikely hero who could hit the ball a country mile. I also have clear memories of Fred Couple's Master's win in '92 along with Norman's collapse in '96. There wasn't, however, a dominant force in the game until news of a young amateur named Tiger Woods began to filter through the golf grapevine. Unless you subscribed to Golf Magazine, news of his U.S. Amateur victories didn't become widely reported until the Golf Channel first aired in '95. I remember watching the last of his 3 U.S. Am victories in '95 and '96 and being intensely interested in the press conference that followed. After a huge offer from Nike worth $40 million, Tiger announced 'Hello World' which created quite the uproar among many of the then established PGA Tour pros who felt no golfer was worth that amount of money. Some PGA players were clearly jealous, or dismissive, of his talent - either upset when reporters only asked questions about Tiger or that he was coming off as too cocky - arrogant even. In fact, after Tiger declared his intention to win every tournament he entered, Curtis Strange famously stated, 'he'll learn.' Well, Curtis learned - as we all did - never to dismiss Tiger Woods. As fans, we watched every tournament he entered with those same expectations. Of course he didn't win them all, but rarely was he not in the mix. From behind the ropes at the '97 Byron Nelson, I vividly remember watching a young Tiger prowl the fairway on his way to winning that year (on the heals of his first Master's victory). Before Tiger entered the arena, the Nelson was always more of a party than a spectator event - but not this year, as the entire gallery seemed to realize they were witnessing not only greatness, but someone who would ultimately change the face of golf as they understood it. I doubt I will ever again witness this kind of dominance in golf, but I feel extremely lucky to have 'been there' along with a golfing generation who will always consider Tiger the one and only true GOAT!

Well said, you pretty much said everything that I've been saying for the last 25 or so years. I'm only 37 years old, and became a lifelong fan of Tiger at the 1997 Masters when I was just 11 years old at the time. What you said, is so true, I can still remember all the hate Tiger got back in the 90's and even into the 2000's as well. To me, what I find kinda strange is, for some reason, many people did not embrace Tiger in golf, the way everyone seemed to embrace other sports icons like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Jerry Rice, Michael Phelps etc etc etc. I remember in the Summer of 2000, when I was just 14 years old, I was at my local golf club pretty much every day golfing and hanging out, and it seemed like everyone at my club hated it whenever Tiger would win another major, and he dominated that Summer in 2000. To be fair, it could have something to do with the fact that I live in Ohio, and everyone knows that Ohio is Jack Nicklaus's home and stomping grounds lol. I just feel like lots and lots of people missed out on just enjoying the brilliance and genius of Tiger Woods, because they were too busy trying to diminish his accomplishments. I also feel like people became way too obsessed with constantly comparing Tiger to Jack, instead of just enjoying the amazing golf that Tiger was playing, they always had to keep counting his majors and comparing him with Jack. It got so bad that it felt like you were either on Team Tiger's side, or Team Jack's side, and that's not how golf or sports in general should be. When Michael Jordan was doing his thing and winning rings and awards, nobody was saying well Jordan still doesn't have 11 rings like Bill Russell lol, but with Tiger, everyone is always keeping track of exactly how many wins and majors he has.

I was there with you, read Golf mag, remember the hate, death threats, even anger of his competitors and the commentators- and then ESPN came - and they all loved the new spotlight on Golf and their new bigger purses 💰 and accepted him. All of them knew he was better and I was upset because where he first started out waving to fans and throwing him his golf ball, they changed him. But he just kept winning and winning and winning despite all of that and that is really what made him a champ - winning when it was expected and when it wasn’t- incredible shots, always at the right time. He’s not just the greatest of all time in golf but in sport.

Tiger is the reason I golf regularly. My dad is the reason I started. But without Tiger, my interest would have waned years ago I think. He's only a couple years older than me, so watching him at the age I was when he started taking the world over, it was just so impactful. I hate that his body has betrayed him so much over the years because I think he would have had 20 majors or more by now. Regardless, in my mind he's the GOAT.

I'm glad he's able to play even occasionally but look at his eyes - pain pain pain is what I see. Constant never ending physical tortuous pain. His body is too broken to ever get another PGA win but he is still the modern GOAT, and I'm glad to see him happier with himself and his family life.

There are a lot of great participants in any sport, but very few that capture the imagination. Tiger just has a way of drawing people towards him, you're fascinated by how he's going to get on during a tournament, good or bad. In his prime, regular PGA Tour events partly felt like majors.

Glad i got see him at sedgefield in 2015, took my godfather as well, because he never thought he would see tiger in person, but tiger did give him a thumbs up when rode by us as we heading back to the shuttle, it made his day, i've being playing this game since i was 4years old, and i tell people i'm tiger woods , but he has more advantages than me , we laugh about it all the time. I 'm grateful & glad that i witnessed greatness at his finest. So when i'm on the course my mindset is like tiger, we're boys off the course, but on it i'm cut throat , truly the goat in my era.🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐

I don't care what anyone says. Tiger is the GOAT. Not just for his wins, but the fact that he inspired so many people to take up the game, including me. And he inspired so many people to just watch the game even though they never played the game. People forget, he has 82 PGA Tour wins and 41 European Tour wins. Tiger has over 40 records to his name. And has 3 Junior Amateur Titles and 3 U.S. Amateur titles. All in a row. But the best I ever heard was from Colin Montgomery. I can't remember which Major, but it was in Tigers early days. Colin was paired to play with Tiger in the 3rd round. When the press asked Colin what he thought, he stated, well I have more experience, better course management and know how to win. After Tiger blew him away, they again asked Colin what he thought, and he stated, there is only one Golfer out there who will be holding the trophy tomorrow, and that is Tiger. Colin could not believe how Tiger was good at everything in golf. Colin stated, Tiger had no weaknesses on the course. And he was right, Tiger went on to win. Jack was great, but Tiger ascended him, not in Major wins, but inspiring people. And I will add this, Golf is a bloody hard game. I don't think there is a harder game in the world than Golf.
