The Third Eye: How to See in the Absence of Light | Katarina Stephan | TEDxColumbiaUniversity

In this motivational talk, Katarina Stephan delves into her world as someone who is visually impaired. Even with this disability Stephan has triumphed through life as a student, ballerina, and EMT personnel, and she is only 20 years old. With full forces ahead she aspires to be the world's first visually impaired surgeon. Katarina Stephan was born with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, a congenital anomaly of the eye which ultimately led to the surgical removal of her left eye. Today, she has no vision in this eye and wears a prosthesis for cosmetic purposes. Two years ago, she trained with the Salzburg Ballet Company, a professional ballet company in Austria. Shortly after, she returned to America and worked as a teaching assistant in cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine for the Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Internship. She is currently majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior as a premedical student at Columbia University in the City of New York. She enjoys spending her free time as an Emergency Medical Technician with Columbia University Emergency Medical Services (CU-EMS) and providing user interface for visual prostheses that have the capacity to restore vision to the blind. Katarina dreams of becoming a one-eyed surgeon. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What a remarkable journey and story, in addition to the information you have provided here. You are an amazing and strong individual, and I applaud your efforts to succeed in life, and never believe what doctors' prognosis dictate. This information is spot-on to the studies I have conducted as a novice in how the other senses kick-in when we lose some or all of one. Thank you, and much success young lady!!!!

Wow what an inspiration. Only when you are able to feel (not see) the light you can uplift anybody. I saw a KZread about Art of Living where they went to a blind school to uplift and train children to read plain books and feel colours in the book. It was incredible how children in about 3/4 weeks time picked up these skills. It was really eye opening..

Opening the third eye is not that difficult it's just a level of meditation that need to be attain though concentration. The main problem is the society, the stress at work, the poison in daily food that will make you sick and temptation of money and technologies. Society have everything to keep you away from a peaceful mind both physically and mentally.

Damn. Came here by chance. I see from one eye. My whole life. My left eye is just eye sees peripheral vision. My son was born the same. He's 14. I'll try the tilt thing. I've bought and tried so many vr gaming rigs. Ps4 vr..none give me the sense i got one time in my life that blew my mind. I got in my car and rubbed my good eye and as it was clearing up, I looked at the steering wheel and saw it in 3d(with both eyes). I cried. Couldn't help it. I'm soo jealous of normal vision. However, I've always been good at baseball, football, and basketball. Not sure if my vision affects it.. I see super good out of my good eye.

Its really weird that I have been in every situation u could possibly imagine (no-one has killed me yet...) I get bit constantly but they all get fed exactly as they ask. Everyone has "intuition" It's described as HUMAN NATURE It's not a privilege; it's not to be abused; it's not a gift to us. It's our debt to the ones that sacrificed them selves to provide our way. Grace everyone for they're in his image. No-one is alone in sin.
