The test to become a redworm supplier

If you are looking at this video, because you want to become a worm supplier, thank you. It tells me that you are doing the research first. This is one step and there are several steps before the test. Some of my earlier videos may help you get to this point.

    I received my order a few weeks ago, and I must say, I am thoroughly pleased! Our worms made the journey from Washington state to Virginia, and when I took them out of the package I was very impressed in the quantity and the life the worms had from the journey! Although I did not weigh them, I am confident I received a pound of worms. This video right here is what prompted me to purchase from NW Redworms. As a previous business owner and a consumer as well, I have always been fair and honest with my customers and demand nothing less from businesses I send my money to. Anyone pondering making a purchase from NW Redworms, just go ahead and order, you will be taken care of!

    When I’m ready to start selling worms I’d like a supplier like NW worms because of the honesty and quality. I would hate for my customers to receive that little bunch.

    After seeing this, reading the comments, and reading some stuff on your page, I feel that I may have been shorted on my order from another company when I purchased "500 red wigglers" for my start up colony.... I'm happy to say that they are at least reproducing, but I don't think I will order from that other company in the future.

    WORMS DO SHRINK DURING THE SHIPPING PROCESS. They are shipped in dry peat and they lose moisture. In order to determine the true weight they need to be fed until they return to normal size right? So within "x" amount of time they should weigh a pound...this is fair to both you as the recipient and the worm farmer.

    So, I'm curious, what are the advantages of being a NWRedworms supplier as opposed to being an independent supplier? Thanks.

  • @moesanrath

    @moesanrath

    Being a supplier for him vs being in it all for yourself would have a couple of advantages for everybody involved 1. The worms would probably be sourced from your area to the 3 to 5 states around you that orders would come from. so the worms would arrive fresher an more livelier and actually probably quicker then if they arrived from him only. 2. It would cause less issues to the enviroment as it would require less fuels to be consumed for worms to be supplied out across the country from various people. 3. You wouldn't have to spend 2 4 6 10 yrs building up your name as a trusted supplier. Meaning you'd be gaining access to his network of loyal customers. 3A. Meaning you'd be able to possibly start turning a profit faster then if you was in it all just for yourself these are just a few of the ideas that popped into my head after reading your question. hope it helped

    I just bought from a company that was supposed to be two pounds but there wasn't even a 1/4 of a lb and the first batch they sent were DEAD! I called them and they sent more but it still wasn't even one whole pound, might have been a half. Never again.

    +Cadd If this is Uncle Jim's then all I've got to say is I got ripped off on an order for 2lbs that wasn't even a half pound. However another order a week earlier was huge and likely a full pound and they were much better looking too. I thought it was so strange having two orders from the same place appearing so vastly different in quantity and quality... but now I think I understand, since they are coming from varied sources then that explains the big difference in amount and quality. No of this matters to me now since I order all my worms now from a different and far more consistent source than Uncle Jim's.

    so your a Northwest supplier ? Camas, WA I see how do the worms do in winter up there? is that the reason for the NOV sale ? I've bought worms from Uncle Jims They sells worms by #'s not weight and They are in PA so clear shipping goes across the US to get them here in Calif. .................. How many worms are in your lb of red wigglers & night crawlers ?? Maybe i'll get some from you..been raising/composting worms for about 4 yrs now for my garden and some friends who fish. so do you weigh 1 lb of worms out 1st then add some peat moss for shipping to the bag then ship em out ??

    So what about Uncle Jim's? You have their bags in the video. Do you supply them? I got my worms from there and they were shipped from a supplier, in another state and not from Uncle Jim's in PA. We really felt like we probably got more like 500 to maybe 750-1,000 worms when we ordered 2,000. The bag weighed 20 ounces including the peat moss and the bag. Also, I am pretty sure we had some Perionyx Excavatus mixed in. So does your 2lbs of worms weigh 2lbs when they arrive; Or significantly less because of packaging? Your video on what 1 pound should look like puts my 2,000 order to shame. They looked like 1/8th of that.

    I'm sorry to here that about your order. I used to buy Uncle Jims European night crawlers for stock and they would lose about 10% of their weight, 15% if the weather was hot. anymore loss than that I would contact them immediately to let them know.

  • @chewee2k

    Yeah, Uncle Jim's lists their redworms as a "redworm mix." I called to ask about that, and they replied that the "mix" consisted of Eisenia Fetida, Eisenia Andrei, and Perionyx Excavatus ( Malaysian Blues or India Blues, an invasive species, by most accounts). I'm wondering if they got some Blues mixed in, and rather than do the work to farm only reds and eliminate the blues, they just started selling the "mix." I ordered redworms from Earthworms4sale.com and they sent me a pound of blues instead. They didn't respond to my subsequent e-mail and I was stuck with blues. They are a pain - escape artists. I figured out how to contain them in the bin, but they are hard to deal with with when harvesting.

    Sooo do you put in a little over a pound? Technically your pound isnt yet a pound either since you have debris on the worms... Do you make up a bit for that debris?

    I live in N TX and really want to start a worm bin and a black soldier fly bin. however it gets dang hot here in the summer and dang cold here in the winter. I really don't want to do this inside the house. are some worms more able to take the heat and cold? would insulating the box help? how hot can the soil temp get and still have healthy worms?'

  • @NWRedworms

    @NWRedworms

    Heat in the compost is not caused by outside temp, it's caused by bacteria from over feeding. So don't over feed in the summer. In the winter extra bedding on top will save them.

  • @monomer2

    @monomer2

    +Tracy Bruring If your going to keep it outside then pick a shady location and bury a large tall trashcan deep into the ground to serve as your worm bin... they should survive your Texas winters and summers provided you keep it moist. If you use leaf compost as the bedding material those worms will go down a couple feet if necessary to avoid any uncomfortable temperatures near the surface. Redworms are not as delicate as you might think... and even if the worms should die for some reason the cocoons they lay will survive much harsher conditions and for very longer periods of time to hatch out when the conditions become more favorable.

    I am thinking about trying to be worm supplier, I have some very healthy, and nice looking live red worms, and Canadian night crawlers. I’m thinking about adding European night crawlers also. I use a lot for fishing myself, and quite a few people that buy from me also, but I’d like to sell more.

    When shipping a pound of worms you should add a little more weight because the worms lose weight during their travel.

    so let me get this straight, people send you "1lb" of worms and if its less than 1lb then you give them shitty feedback while they eat up the cost of packaging and shipping and you end up selling off what you got for free? seems like a shitty deal to me...

  • @NWRedworms

    @NWRedworms

    +Fusion Exotics It sucks on both ends. Most beginning worm suppliers have trouble getting it right the first few times. I have spent hours mentoring suppliers before and after I get a shipment of worms. I don't just send an email marked "fail", but you can see it as you wish.

    +Fusion Exotics No the idiot was the guy/gal who sent less than the "required amount" and put a poor light on their business. If I were shipping worms to him I'd go over 1/4-1/3 of a pound just to make sure my shipment was adequate. The point here is that he has customers and he wants them to "STAY" customers so if you send him a box of lifeless crap then most likely that is exactly what you'd send to anyone. If you know the rules going in and you fail to work withing them then you have no one to blame but yourself.

    There's a reason that each state has some version of a "weights and measures" department. This ensures that we're all in agreement that a pound weighs the same amount and that a gallon of fuel is our assumed definition of a gallon.
