I've raised worms for 40 years, my dad did also. We used the highest yield of protein chick starter, soaked it in 5gal buckets of water until it ferments, then feed. The red worms love it.

Have been raising red wigglers for the past few years decided to try European nightcrawlers. Ordered the worms and set up a 27 gal tote with natural bedding ( leaf mold, compost, shredded leaves and a bit of native soil). When the worms arrived I dumped them in the bin, gave them a good shower and left them alone for a few days before feeding them. After giving them a good feeding, I checked the bin a week later to see how things were going. The food was all gone, but even after I fed and covered them, these little darlings were climbing up the sides of the tote. The red wigglers have never done that. So now when I feed them, I disturbed them as little as possible and do it under a good light. Live and learn. Just subscribed to your channel, look forward to taking a closer look. Stay well!!!

The liquid that drains from the box is a great liquid fertilizer and allows you to use your scraps (they love tea bags).. If you add some brown material with your scrapes (which is better for your worms anyway) the moisture stays pretty spot on. Brown materials are organic things that sit and won't smell bad over time and are not overly wet. Popular ones include coffee grounds, AGED dead leaves/yard cuttings/grass (do not use fresh of any of those, the material should already be beginning to break down and dry. A leaf/yard pile is awesome for this) , shredded newspaper, chemical free wood pulp/saw dust (in small quantities-they break down very slowly). There may be others but don't give your worms citrus, onion family (onions, scallions, garlic, etc.), or chlorinated water. If you use tap water let it sit and air out over night or more. If you have a yard or garden check out worm tea (made from castings) and free range worms here on YT. There are so many great videos out there from people who know more than I do. Happy worming friends. Be blessed. --Caution,I heard someone crashed their worm farm with cornmeal so do your research and add it slowly.

Thanks too for the excellent tip on feeding compost worms. Years ago I had a 10 litre bucket with bought worms. Though I just threw the waste in it went fine till I put some mackrel scraps in it. It got so hot the worms melted. Did it stink. I could not save 1 worm.

Hey new worm farmer here. I'm wondering if I put red wiglers in with my night crawlers if they will kill each other off. I ordered 1000 today and have room for them in my night crawler box. I'm wondering because I feel like the red wigglers would help keep their that cleaner since they are really good at composting. I'm planning to use the red wigglers for fertilizer and the nightcrawlers to sell to fisherman

I don't use European night crawlers but the red worms. Do this European worms need to be in not so wet bedding. I ask you because my bean is always so wet that i can't sift it but I'm afraid that if i let it dry i will damage the worms.
