The Tartan Turban - Colonel Alexander Gardener

European officers were an important part of the Khalsa army under Ranjit Singh. One of the most extraordinary personalities was the American Alexander Gardner who survived to tell the tale of the anarchy following Ranjit Singh’s death. Here Davinder Toor explains what this haunting portrait may tell us about the man . Read more in the book The Tartan Turban: In Search of Alexander Gardner available at Kashihouse.com

This guy is a legend! He survived everything. Lived a long life, married locally and left a detailed account of it. He alone protected a fort of HH Ranjit Singh and was super brave. He globetrotted, met czars, Indian Kings, and even served for Dost Mohammed Khan's nephew (His indian wife and son were killed in this battle too). He was injured badly in most of the fights but kept up. Lived a long life (very unusual for a 17th century soldier). I wish to take a deeper look into this topic. He was also mentioned in great novel, The man who would be king.

The way the turban was tied, could also mean that someone else tied the turban on him.

From my understanding of these European officers, not one fought with the Sikhs during the Anglo Sikh wars but either joined with the British or left. And if they did fight with the Sikhs they sabotaged them during the first war. I believe Gardner was a saboteur. Ranjit Singh may have joined most of the Sikhs together but he had horrible judgement to whom he employed and put in positions of power. And it came back to bite the small empire he created.

There were few who tried to weather the Turmoil like French general allard who stayed for a while after Ranjit bu I guess couldn’t resist through all political machinations, colonel canora who died in second Anglo Sikh war refusing to parlay with British and a Spanish doctor who stayed in lahore. On the whole you are right most abandoned the ship but equal number of Sikh generals were to be blamed for sabotaging the war effort against the British including the royal house itself. Not sure what mercenaries could have done differently.

@@simranjitsingh9874 Yes you're correct a few did stay behind and fight with the Sikhs. But after Ranjit Singh died the hostility toward them increased and many left. In the end of the day Sikhs fought among themselves in different factions and this eventually led to the British defeating them. The lesson that Sikhs should have learned from this was to make sure good men are left in positions of power or the bad ones will destroy everything to get theirs. That is a lesson all people's from past to present should have learned.

Gardner was an American, FYI, and in his time, Americans hated the Brits.
