Equestrian Portrait of Guru Gobind Singh, Patiala, Punjab c1830-40
Davinder Toor a leading collector of Sikh art describes two pictures of Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Guru of the Sikhs) mounted on horseback. The preparatory sketch offers a rare insight into the thinking of the artist Ram Chand. Davinder explains the symbolism and significance of the finished picture.
This is series of short videos we filmed during UKPHA's Empire of the Sikhs Exhibition (July-Sept 2018) at the Brunei Gallery in London.
Both pictures can be found in the book In Pursuit of Empire :Treasures from the Toor Collection of Sikh Art. This book tells the remarkable story of the Sikh Empire through a spectacular selection of over 100 rare and beautiful objects from the world's finest collection of Sikh art.
