How British empire turned to Kung-Fu trained Sikhs to deal with Shanghai’s gangsters

A century ago, the British empire turned to Kung-Fu trained, red-turbanned Sikhs to tame a Shanghai overrun by drugs and vice. The forgotten story, though, fuelled misperceptions among many Chinese about Indians, which cast a toxic shadow over the relationship even today.

This was a great episode. Even in some early Bruce Lee movies ,you would have this Sardar ji looking character played by chinese actors who would act as British agents against the local populace.

Some Chinese movies depicting the period show Sikh policemen. One specific example I remember is from the Bruce Lee movie "Fist of Fury". There is a sign outside a gate saying "No dogs and Chinese allowed". A Sikh policeman stands outside the gate and stops Bruce Lee from entering. After this Bruce Lee kicks down the sign and breaks it. The Chinese have definitely not forgotten them.

@@Punjab_Punjabi_Punjabiat yup, those Bengali/bihari/Mughal loyal dogs were taught a nice lesson in 1857 rebellion. Madrass province was the first to rebel and held low loyalty even though they were second to lose, so kudos to them. Gujjus never joined them. Those dogs from the province of Bengal were disciplined when they barked too much but punjabis and Gurkhas dogs were a good boy. Low on brains and high on loyalty to their masters and killed their own who did not want to serve. What a good breed they are.

@@Contractor48 Gujjus never have guts to fight from any side. They are always after money only. How many gujjus are in the Indian armed forces now? Even today it is the sikhs and gorkhas who are at the forefront always. Sikhs joined the British army only when they saw rest of the Indians doing it. Also the Britishers promised that they will free their country if they will help them with the war. By the way, it was again the sikhs who had sacrificed more lives than others for the Freedom struggle.

The difference between the Chinese and Indians (including Sikhs) is that Indians are STILL proud of killing and dying for a white European colonizer country while the Chinese think this is shameful. Therefore, the difference between the Chinese and Indians is that we have a slavish mentality vis a vis the West whereas the Chinese do NOT! Far from reducing, the "misconceptions" that Chinese still have about Indians being bootlickers and slaves of the West are only reinforced by India's actions like joining alliances such as Quad!
