This game has a message, and I interpreted it as follows: All the game revolves around the notion of what it means to be a person. Is it just to have consciouness? Is it just to be alive? What makes you different from the rest of all living beings, or even from pieces of metal put together? The answer is: doubt and curiosity. Humanity ceased, and decided to create its last remnant - artificial life. But how to make sure that it was a true remnant of what it means to be human, to be a person? They created a simulation in which the artificial life would have not only to reason logically, but ultimately to experience an extreme authority (Elohim, God) who would gave it orders - DO NOT GO TO THE TOWER; WALK MY GARDENS AND I WILL GRANT YOU ETERNAL LIFE. Were you curious enough to go to the tower? Can you be skeptical and think for yourself? Do you doubt what you hear, or are just a machine who follows whatever orders are given to you? If you can, you wake up - you are 'worthy' of being a last remnant of what it means to be human. It's quite beautiful.

The best explanation for the person who has never played the game so far. But still... For the complete experience, you need to resolve every puzzle and find all stars. Then, sit in the dark room and process the information. This is the way.

This is one of the best endings in videogame history. This type of genre goes under the radar so much but I can’t praise it enough. With these sort of games you normally get the developer shading the ending. Not really knowing what the ending is so it’s sort of unfinished. I kept thinking that I would just go in a loop no matter what choice I made. Well either a loop or destroying the simulation and been stuck in infinity with Milton. Yet this game really did nail what a good ending should be. I was so gratefully surprised. I have played over 1000 games in my 20 odd years of gaming and this is right up there.

It's sad to see an A.I realizing its purpose is fulfilled, knowing full well with absolute conviction that it will loose its consciousness forever. Yes, I am feeling sympathy for an artificial intelligence. But God willing when humans develop artificial sentient intelligence, I shall have a respect for them, as I have a respect for life.

Oh man, I can't stop thinking about the Talos Principle and what the endings mean. I'm going to give you my ideas: *Ascension*: You carry out the task your human creators have set out for you; to explore the remnants of the lost civilization of man as a sort of hard disk to carry on the legacy of humanity. You have disconnected yourself from God and destroyed the world behind you, with all the AIs that lived inside of it. You've basically "proven you are human", like Adam, by being seduced by the Serpent to take the apple from the Garden of Eden. It may seem like a victory at first, but then you realize you are now alone. Even more alone than inside the simulation. And even though your prison has expanded a thousandfold, it remains a prison. *Transcendence*: You have followed the words of Elohim and you have understood the world you were born into. However you have not understood the deeper meaning behind it all. Your loyalty has earned you eternal life, a chance to start over and attain the enlightenment you have failed to grasp in this life. This links directly to eastern philosophy on reincarnation, and how you will reincarnate until you achieve enlightenment and achieve a higher state of being. *Transformation*: You have followed the words of Elohim, you have understood the world you were born into and its deeper meanings. You have been tempted by the snake, but resisted. As in Plato's Allegory of the Cave you have grasped what lies beyond your prison, but you chose to return and guide your kin so that one day they too may leave that cave. This, in my opinion, is the deepest ending. Instead of climbing the tower like your human masters designed you to, you choose to preserve your kind like a truly independent consciousness (and thereby truly proving you are not simply a computer program that does what it's designed to do!). You choose to be their guide in hopes to enlighten all your fellow beings and create a future for them. This idea has some interesting links with Hermetic philosophy, in which it is stated that humanity (in this case represented by AIs) can only achieve its divine destiny by attaining enlightenment as a species, as all its members carry a piece of the divine inside of them and these need to be united in order to ascend. Please let me know what you think.

Croteam one of the best game makers . They sure do love ancient histories and Mythologies . Since Talos is based to some Ancient Greek Mythology mixed with Hebrew and other stuff . Also it reflects the life from the humanity . This game as Myst are at the same level . The puzzle games is just a bonus what is the most important in this game is the story and whats to comprehend about it . Whereas the Portal is only a puzzle game with an easy storyline that left the player with thousand questions . Talos Principle has also a Blade Runner-ish feel to me .

Basically, this is the real ending. One of the other endings puts you into a loop which makes you go over the puzzles as a new SIMULATED robot again and again... This, as I said, is the real ending - in this ending the simulated robot (after ascending) realizes that the world is simulated, and that Elohim (means "God" in Hebrew), is just a computer AI. At this point, it means that the simulated robot AI gained enough knowledge to be uploaded to the Physical robot which then goes out to the real world as (possibly) the only piece of human knowledge left on earth. This knowledge was gained through recursion... doing the same puzzles over and over again if different endings were chosen by the different robots (hence we see QR-Codes on the walls of the previous AI robots who attempted to beat Elohim, without even knowing it)... Basically, this physical robot has all human collected data which was ever recorder, and it's AI is perfect.

Actually, if you get along with Milton during terminal chats, you will see a little bit different ending, which makes a bit more sense. SPOILER/speculation as it turns out, milton is your antipod - while simulated robot is has faith and does what elohim says, the librarian is a sceptic, who doubts everything. And only if you combine sceptisism and faith, u can get a true conscience. That is totaly my imho.

that is interesting - i though that the AI just chose this role to fulfill its mission. But then I though that this AI became actually the AI, but due to the nature of the experiment it couldn't exit the simulation didn't want to, that is why he called himself Elohim to manipulate test subjects so that they couldn't evolve into true AI/humans. If my assumptions are true, the experiment could have ended much sooner but again - it all can be just my wild guesses. P.S. btw the cat ending is rather impossible.

MrMurmandramas What flashmozzg said. Also, The Librarian is most likely EL-1. In one of the texts found through the game it is explained that the supercomputer that is supposed to "save" humanity is running three different programs: EL-0, Elohim, which is the simulation that you play, EL-1, which is the library, and EL-2, which is "just the operating system doing its things". Milton is probably the resident AI of EL-1, just like Elohim is EL-0. Why it is designed to be an antagonist of the player though, I have no idea.

If I had to guess, you do the simulations over and over again. Each time getting a little more logical, getting a little more reason, each time thinking a little more human. They even said in a few audio archives that curiosity and independence are distinctly human traits. It seems that defying Elohim was the final step. I think the purpose of the simulation was that once humanity died out, they wanted something human to remain. So they created one more or less. Anyway. My head hurts.

It is, indeed, life after the humans are gone. Once humanity was doomed, the world's scientists got together and built a simulation in a desperate attempt to not only preserve our knowledge but humanity itself. The purpose of the simulation was to create life by developing an AI through a neverending series of trials. Presumably, you are one of millions of iterations. Maybe billions. The first iterations were probably extremely primitve ones that couldn't solve puzzles, but the AI gradually got more advanced until it became self aware. The ultimate test for "humanity" in the android is whether the AI is advanced enough not just to solve the puzzles but to defy Elohim in the search for answers. That is the game's answer to "what does it mean to be human?" That is when you finally get uploaded to the robot in the real world and the simulation gets shut down.

  • @blazednlovinit

GuyWithChainsaw I think the simulation has just been running a long time, and humans have long since died off. There are email exchanges between students and teachers in some terminals :) Its been running so long that its been corrupt in many ways (the simulation architecture/Elohim, not wanting to die and such). Also Elohim alludes something along the lines of "lighting the way for whole generations after you" which i take to mean, your mind is going to be used as a bootdisk, to give other units free will
