Croteam told one of the most thought-provoking and beautiful stories I've ever seen - through emails, snippets of old texts, audio logs, and debates with a conflicted A.I. - over a foreground of simple but elegantly designed gameplay with a gorgeous soundtrack. Is anything more tragic than hearing Alexandra lose her best friend, and the way she approaches the event, logically.
@chuck_duck

People always say that this game tries to argue that Alex did the right thing to work instead of spend time with those she cared about. That their answer to that dilemma is always to try to save the world. I disagree because of this. It shows that Alex didn’t allow herself to be emotional because she needed to work. She was unable to find solace, unable to find comfort, unable to make peace because she was so obsessed with creating something that would live on.
@RichArchilles
2 жыл бұрын
@@chuck_duck and yet if Alex hadnt devoted her time like she had to the Talos project, would it really have ended up working like it did? In a world ending scenario, I would wholeheartedly agree with you that it's better to spend ones final moments not laboring over something you won't know will end up working, but there is something to be said about Alexandra's conviction to see her work through to the end.

You have to think the Horizon Zero Dawn writers listened to these. Drennan's love for everything that exists, her profound belief that life is worth living, and her enormous sacrifices in order to preserve civilization, remind me so much of Elisabet Sobeck. The game's perspective on death also.
@neilm.7316

I too couldn't help but make that comparison. It makes me wonder how many people are like this. Are Sobeck and Drennan idealized people that we would put our trust in to solve problems the rest of us consider too bleak?
11:34 - My Best Friend Died Today - really gets me eveyrtime i hear it, because it explain how pointless and valuable is our existence for other people. How specific is one single human life, could be your dad, your mother, your brothers and sisters or your friends. This has a very high meaning when you think about it. It's the meaning of death.

Played this game the year it came out. I was 14. These logs made me weep like a baby, and they still do. Alex's thoughts on existence were very very impactful to me at that age, and informed a lot of how I saw myself, and morality in general, at the time. That's an age when it's really easy to start feeling like everything is completely meaningless, and the idea that one can both believe firmly in the lack of any true universal meaning, and still believe that humanity is good and living is worthwhile, got me through a lot of tough times. I loved Milton, too- the debates with him felt very much like real conversations to me, and his plight and acting as a "voice of reason"- even as he was a bit of a jerk- made him a very sympathetic character to me, so much so that I felt horribly sad to finish the game and never be able to see him again. Even Elohim's ultimate quiet resignation to his fate at the end of the game stuck with me as deeply poignant. I still come back to this video when I'm feeling down and need a voice to remind me why the world is good. So I think that proves you're right; I don't think this game would resonate with every kid, but the right kid at the right time... it messes with you (in a good way) forever.

@@LordofTimeandSpaaace I played this game when I was 10. Before playing it, I believed that serving God was the purpose of life. I believed that I would gain eternal life after my death. I believed in the Bible. Playing this game gave me the inspiration to think freely. To quote Drennan, “to question the assumptions [I was] presented with.” I realized I don’t believe in God or an Afterlife. As a result, I had a severe existential crisis about my own mortality. Unable to go to my parents for guidance as they were devoutly Christian, and unable to go to a Therapist, I just kept playing the game. Going deeper down the rabbit hole of unanswerable questions. That is, until I really stopped to analyze. I came to the conclusion that life not having a given meaning is fine, because we all have the free will to find our own. I found a meaning to life, found my freedom. This game is the single most important piece of media to my life. It made me find my purpose in life. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

@@chuck_duck "Thank you for sharing your story" sounds kind of pathetic and generic in response to a comment like this, but I do mean it earnestly. 10 is a really difficult age to go through something like that, especially given that society as a whole really underestimates what kids are capable of thinking about. I feel the world would be much better off if there was a way to remind everyone that kids are not stupid- they just haven't built the years of foundational knowledge that adults use to function. When kids are patronized for asking questions, or their serious concerns aren't treated with gravity, I think that forms a kind of hurt that is carried through adulthood. It's tough to have hope in the larger world right now, and I think optimistic nihilism is speaking to a lot of people because of that. It reminds us to see the small ways that people are good to each other, and what we can do, as individuals, to help make things even just a small amount better. I'm really glad to hear there are others who found some answers through this game :] (Also, I strongly recommend "Everything Everywhere All at Once" if you haven't seen it already :] )

As someone who suffers from existential crisis more often than not, the time capsule at 3:58 really strikes a chord
Thanks for posting this. One of the best parts of the game.
I really appreciate this game for its honest depiction of humanity. It does not insist that humanity is perfect by any means, though I think it gives something that a lot of people overlook nowadays. I see more and more people fall into a mindset of raw misanthropy. People often obsess over the negatives of the world and of humanity and rarely take a second look at the kindness and brilliance. It is easy to notice the person who kicks a homeless man while down or abuses their pet dog, but the person who gives that homeless man a meal or heals the abused dog go far less noticed. For all the deliberate misinformation in the world which leads to demonstrable harm of humanity and the earth, there are countless people who are fighting back against it.
In the early part of the game I would listen to the time capsules when I first came into the area. By the end I was saving them as a reward for myself for completing the area and putting off hearing what I knew had to be coming.
I love these Time Capsules, they are beautiful!! After immersing myself for 3 hrs i picked up "Looking Through the Archive" and shed a tear
