Kishore Mahbubani...what a mouth full, however, Mr. Mahbubani is spot on. Keeping peace in Taiwan Strait, the best option is to maintain the status quo. It worked for the past 70 years but the political climate has changed on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In Taipei, Taiwan the new president Tasi Ing-Wen and her party (Progressive Party) are pushing for Taiwan's Independence. On the China side, Beijing is no longer the weak man of Asia of a generation ago. Today, China is an economic and military superpower. Beijing is ready for unification with Taiwan by peaceful means but force will be used if Taiwan pushes for an INDEPENDENCE. Now comes the United States. who sees China as the only global competitor capable to replace America as the sole dominating power in the 21st century. This path to collision is like the ancient Peloponnesian War between Athans (dominant power) and Sparta (ascending rising military power) in 400 BC. Something has to give and Athenians did not budge and lost the war. If U.S. and China go to war, it will be the end of the civilization with nuclear strikes by hypersonic missiles and sub-launched missiles. There is no winner and no place is safe. Concession must be made between great powers to co-exist or not exist at all.

It was only three years ago when the former U.S. president was talking about leaving NATO saying it took more from the U.S. than it gives so again, what benefit are you talking about? On the other hand, "Americans have been invading other countries since before America was a thing, as early as 1741, when the North American battleground for the War of Austrian Succession was called King George’s War - one of the French and Indian Wars. That’s a lot of wars. According to Kelly and Laycock’s book, the United States has invaded or fought in 84 of the 193 countries recognized by the United Nations and has been militarily involved with 191 of 193 - a staggering 98 percent." This US marine breakdown on how the US used NED to fund terrorism in Myanmar, Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang and in this case Taiwan to wage a proxy war against China. Source Multi-Domain Operations: The US Wages Constant War and Across All Domains Link removed. Some nice quotes worth sharing to help refresh our memory. "So how many Western nations got punished for killing 1 million iraqi's, 250.000 Afghans and 500.000 Syrians.... These nations were all illegally invaded by the US and NATO buddies.. The people in these nations were even cheering about these invasions. NOt 1 tear shed, not one nation punished for their crimes. It shows the true face of people in the West. It's disgusting... Assange is in still jail for exposing the war crimes of the West.. The West don't punish the ones committing crimes against humanity, but they punish the one exposing them... Please tell me who got punished for lying about WMD's and killing 1 million Iraqi's?" --Kaiman Yu The millitary is America’s biggest jobs program. Japan did land on the Northern coast of Taiwan without Qing knowing about it, and only found out because the British saw the Japanese land on Taiwan. How come? They did not have real control over the Southern part. We, humans, have the most challenging situation with our HOME, THE PLANET EARTH. And what I'm seen is the war, preparation of war, threatening from country to country. Is like leaders are blind or are out of mind. Is a serious situation because the citizens, the real owners of the countries don't want or need a war. Something needs to be done. Stop everything and seat to talk, not in that endless meetings that never come with a solution, but just postponed and postponed. It must be something different fast and pragmatic. URGENT THINGS NEED TO BE DONE.

Stay strong Taiwan! I think the Taiwanese system is way too different from mainland (in a good way), and people have formed their distinct political and cultural identities. They even use different currencies, and have a visa system for the mainlanders. As an overseas Chinese, I strongly think that TW is the last bastion of liberal Chinese discourse, culture and freedom. It would be devastating for modern Chinese culture if Taiwan turns into another HK. Edited: Just wanted to add that I have nothing against mainland Chinese. I love their rich history and also the language and culture, which I practice. Just having a differing opinion on certain sensitive topics.

You sounded like an ignorant person you are? Maybe you are brainwashed to the extent you lost any faculty of rational thought. As a Chinese from the diaspora, the Province of Taiwan is and always will be an inalienable part of China however you want to cut it. Of the three countries divided by the quirk of history, only one country has been reunited and no prize for guessing it is a Caucasian country and today two Asian countries stand apart and should be immediately reunited. Hope to see it in my lifetime. Yes, the Taiwanese Parliament indulge in liberal discourse. Obviously you did not see the brawls, shoe throwing, spitting and punches so often a feature of the Taiwanese legislators. You call that political discourse, I call it brawling. Maybe you want to have your eyes check before you access the internet. Sure if you have shite for brain, I can see where you are coming from.

Well, South Korea's position on Taiwan independence is quite complicated. This is because they also have reunification issue. Even Koreans have their own version of "One Korea Principle". They just have not forced any other members of the international community to recognise it. So technically speaking, South Korea says they hope for any kind of peaceful resolution on Taiwan-China relations, so may support the defence of Taiwan, not the independence of Taiwan. We have never made it clear that we will militarily react if China invades Taiwan. Now you can see Seoul's ambiguity has made military planners in China confused and has made it more complicated to plan the invasion. Because both Korean and Chinese may unconsciously agree that they don't know what South Korean will do in Taiwan contingency but know South Korean will do "something" which can make Chinese invasion of Taiwan crippled.

The mainland is so focused on saving face that I wonder what they would do if Taiwan started shooting down the PKA planes that violate the airspace? Would the CCP try to save face too and launch an invasion prematurely in order to get back at Taiwan, only to loosely catastrophically or would they slink away silently and lose face but they would be better prepare for a proper invasion that is well planned out? With how stupid the central government is and how arrogant they are, it wouldn't surprise me if they foolishly go against Sun Tzu and order a massive invasion force to embark within the month without proper planning and leading to hundreds of thousands of troops being swallowed by the sea

The residents of Taiwan should examine with who and why Taiwan is likely to have a war, find a solution to resolve the conflict peacefully and before a conflict is brewing, do not depend on countries and people from thousand miles away to protect your peace, as it comes with a price and often behind their own interest.
