Why is Japan Fortifying its Small Islands, and why is it such a big deal? | Foreign Correspondent

After decades of peace, Japan is now confronting the possibility of war. With concerns over a resurgent Russia, North Korea and crucially, a more powerful China in the region, Japan is embarking on its biggest military spend since the Second World War. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5

On Foreign Correspondent, reporter James Oaten has gained unique access to the Japanese military as it fortifies its remote southwest islands with new military bases. The popular tourist destination of Ishigaki, an island that is closer to Taiwan than Tokyo will soon be home to hundreds of soldiers, stockpiles of ammunition and missiles that could one day strike mainland China. The local farming and fishing community is divided over the base, and what it means for their idyllic way of life. The population paid a high price in the dying days of World War 2, fuelling fears that they will once again become a target.

The sad thing about reality that most civilians don't understand is that peace cannot be achieved without a show of force, and it's a fact that there is nothing around it or something in between. That Japanese guy perfectly says it: "While it's not good to have too much, having nothing at all is a lot worse."

Peace can only be achieved through nuclear deterrence. A conventional military does very little for deterrence. If japan wants true deterrence they should build SLBMs, nuclear subs and nuclear warheads. This increase in military spending is just stupid since they could get away by spending 0.1% of gdp on maintaining a 300 nuclear warheads. Instead they spend 10-20 times that and gets a small fraction of that deterrence.

Just get nuclear weapons, it worked extremely well for north korea to deter america. The same for the soviet union when it came to their use of tactical nuclear weapons. Since they never wantead to target france because they had their own nukes. Nuclear power can act however they want against non nuclear powers that has been the case since the weapons invention. I taiwan had nuclear weapons I doubt china would be able to act this level of aggression the same with north korea with firing missiles over japan. If you can hit them back with the same force they will back off. Otherwise it will all be dependent on how they will see how america will respond to this situation. And that will change dependent on who is their president since it goes back and forward between isolationism and interventionism.

The war between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan ended in China's victory. It is also known as the Second Sino-Japanese War. Regarding the start time of this war, it is generally counted from the "Marco Polo Bridge Incident" (July 7th Incident) that occurred on July 7, 1937, and it is called the "Eight Years of Anti-Japanese War". Some historians count from the "September 18th Incident" that occurred on September 18, 1931, which was the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War defined by the term "Fourteen Years of Anti-Japanese War", but the war ended with Japan in 1945. At noon on August 15, until Emperor Showa of Japan broadcast the war-ending edict to the whole country, Japan surrendered.

There is no way Japan and Philippines will not be dragged here even if US has no bases on both countries. This is because of overlapping territorial claims. Japan is forced to invade other countries becoz it's a poor resource island country. Same as UK that's why Japan learned from UK during her early modern civilization in Meiji Ishin. But still Japan invaded British controlled India and killed mostly Indian people😂😂😂

I think the soldiers that will move into the newly built military bases would need to try and build good relationships with the local community. Though it would make the area a military target if Japan does get attacked, I think they're more safer than not having one. China is more likely to take over an undefended location than not. Especially if the Island are uninhabited or has a small local population. China already does not respect the other countries' territorial waters. Who's to say that the uninhabited islands are Japan's? That's the question China would ask.

Even the old PESA is going to be replaced by the Zhuk AESA. Even the jammers are ELTA El/M-8222 Self Protection Pod rather than the Russian ones (because Russia). So yeah, not exactly even a Russian jet at this point, only the main frame is. Most of the sub systs are a mix of Israeli and French systems. Pretty sure they're better than the Russian one, and I'm not going to say it's like very better but it may have a edge over the j-16, if not then peer-to-peer level. Yes, however a non aggressive military is a untested military, which in this case is fine as China is also completely untested, it’s last war was with Vietnam in 1979 and it was defeated harshly. While people might hate the US and the UK for being aggressors in a war, it’s also the reason why they are both the leading militaries in the world followed by France who has had several successful conflicts fought in Africa the last 10 years battling Islamic terrorism.

Yea, I agree with you. Those pacifists are sadly not realistic and borderline delusional with their understanding of the matter... It won't make Japan any more safe nor decrease the likelihood of a war if Japan doesn't take its national security serious by increasing its military capabilities, but to the contrary, it will only increase the potential for war. They cannot let this slip and look weak, China will take advantage of any weakness by Japan. The only chance Japan has is to increase its capabilities for deterrence. China is clearly a revisionist and expansionist imperial power that is increasingly aggressive and assertive in the region and against its neighbors. They take what they want and do not care for international law or a rule based world. That is not how they roll, they only respect strength. Japan has no choice in this matter.

I understand the concern that the elderly woman has, but she needs to understand that without a Japanese base on that island, there will be a Chinese base. Japanese liberals try to avoid tensions solely through negotiation, but that has never been successful in history. Even when armed conflict has been avoided through negotiation, it has been because force is behind it. From a Japanese Youth

I am Taiwanese. The purpose of China's invasion of Taiwan is to build Taiwan into a military base for future wars against Japan and the United States, and to serve as a springboard for China to break through the first island chain defense line. Taiwan and Japan are strategically located as a community with a shared future. It is necessary for the two countries to cooperate in the military and establish a military alliance.

if building defense triggers an attack it is only proof that an attack was coming and they wanted to get it in before Japan could defend itself. The "They are building defenses and that is a danger to our country" is a huge lie that carries no logic. The only "other countries" who would get upset are countries who would prefer to attack a weak Japan and not a well defended Japan.

Question by the interviewer; "Why did you join the Japan Self Defense Force?" and the Answer; "To protect the Japan I love". The only answer possible. On the other hand Japanese that are "troubled" by Japan's military buildup think that the peace they are enjoying will last forever and don't understand that the only reason they sleep soundly in their beds is because of the men willing to shed blood in defense of their homes and families. Rough men with guns are necessary for the peace we all enjoy.
