The TAG Heuer Solargraph in steel offers heightened elegance

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We have previously covered the sandblasted titanium variant of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Solargraph. This model was rather subdued and rugged, with largely grey hues livened with a sliver of colour seen on the teal central seconds hand. But, does it have to be so rugged and tooly? Or, would a more flashy and vibrant Solargraph be a welcomed and worthwhile exercise in variety? Well, there is now such an option. You can now opt for one of two stainless steel Solargraph watches, one with a vibrant sunray blue dial or another with the same black sunray dial seen on the sandblasted titanium model.

    This is nice for those that don’t like to wind. Love my AquaRacer auto. Sporty, looks great, runs as soon as I pick it up, and the bracelet is awesome. Tag is moving up.

    I really wish TAG would have offer more clarity regarding the movement in this watch. I have a feeling, despite what some may say, that it is a standard Citizen Eco-Drive movement. These Solargraph watches are cool but I have a hard time paying $2-3,000 for a Citizen I can get for under $200

    I agree, if the movement isn't better than eco drive in some way I'd stick with Citizen or an Oceanus.

    Good to see more options in this line. I'm generally not a fan of high polish finishing, especially in bracelet center links. They would have just kept the entire bracelet brushed. As such, I still prefer and like my titanium model. Like the matte finish. And, the titanium is very comfy in terms of both lightweight as well as quick temperature acclimation to the touch.

    The polished bracelet links seems to be something a lot of brands seem to insist on. I guess it does look quite nice in dressier scenarios, though my personal preference would also be fully brushed.

    Hey man I’m close to pulling the trigger on the titanium model the only thing I was worried about is that lots of people said it’s scratches easier than steel, what’s your experience?

  • @khronokraze

    @khronokraze

    @@Alex-br4fb I personally don't think so. About the same to me. I'm pretty careful with my watches so the amount of wear and scratches I put on my watches is generally very minimal. As such, the scratches and wear I see on my watches are nearly identical, in my experience, save that of those that specifically have a scratch resistant coating and/or have a particularly hardened material. I think because the material is matte finish, scratches may show up more and you may not be able to hide them with say a brushed or high polish finish in contrast which you could "fix" with some brushing or a polishing respectively. For such a watch, I think the watch may look kind of cool and a little better with some scratches and wear over time.

  • @oes2546
    @oes25465 ай бұрын

    But is the movement any good? Is it peak quartz up there with the 9F and Chronomaster which you can get from around this pricepoint, or is it a cheap Swiss quartz sold as expensively as their (also overpriced) mechanicals? Does it for example have thermo-compensation, each movement being calibrated for its specific quartz crystal? 10 or 5 seconds per year accuracy? Will it last a lifetime and be serviceable like a 9F is?

  • @island717

    @island717

    It’s a rebranded cheap and entry-level CitizenE168 caliber inside. I did some research, and while it’s cheap and entry level, it’s reliable and proven itself long term - I found reports of 20+ years watch with eco-drive (same or silimar citizen caliber) still working without a service. This movement is considered to be true Citizen’s workhorse, so everything should be good at least in reliability/longevity department. But no, it’s not nearly as good as GrandSeiko’s 9F. It has no thermo-compensation, they don’t grow/select their own quartz and accuracy is +\-15sec per month. Which is ridiculously greedy from Tag Heuer, considering how much $$ they ask for this watch and that Citizen does have much more accurate calibers available! They have 0100 caliber with +/-1sec per year!!! But, saying all this, I really like this watch and still going to buy it (in addition to GrandSeiko 9F quartz that I bought a bit earlier). Yes, IT IS overpriced, but sometimes we make irrational decisions :)

    I really like these and the titanium even for the price. I do not like the fully polished mid link on the bracelet. There's too much polish for a "sport" style diver. If there has to be some polish on the bracelet, I'd prefer it on the edges of the mid link like Seiko does with some models.

    Not if you're taking it swimming. In that case, you'll have to open the case back, change the gaskets and have it preassure tested every couple of years. Solar watches have no advantage over regular quartz if you are taking them into water.

    @@superfast30 I'm sure they do on 300m rated luxury watches. But sooner or later, you are going to have to open that case back. Regular quartz TH Aquaracer has a 10 year battery so of course you'd use that opportunity to change the gaskets while changing the battery. I would't go more than 10 years without changing the gaskets on the Solargraph despite the fact that it will probably hold a charge much longer than that. But yeah, there's a chance I'm overreacting.

    I like the light weight of titanium but it is harder to machine so sometimes some parts can have sharp edges and that’s a problem especially if it’s on the clasp . Since we are talking about weight difference it would have been good to mention the respective weights of the pieces to compare the difference . I would go for the steel if it’s under 125 grams if not then the titanium but only if I tried it on and it felt super comfortable with no sharp edges . Pricing is a little on the expensive side considering they are quartz watches at the end of the day. If they were a grand less a piece they would be a lot more appealing .

    Great point regarding the weight. I haven't put one on a scale, but trying it on, they were right on par with what you'd expect from a 40mm steel sports watch - which is usually around 120g (ish).

Probably the first thing come to mind is G Shock watches. Personally this is the first time I also heard of tag solar watches. I also think it will be hard sell for luxury brand like tag to sell them...just like their smart watches. Besides these are quartz and tech watches, they are the same thing. By the end of the day consumers will look at more features and value for their money.
