As soon as she walked through the door I smiled. I am 60 years old and when I was 13 or 14 I received a puppy from a family friend, she had a purebred Elkhound. A neighboring male caught her off guard and they had the sweetest pups. Mine was a caramel colored female and I named her Duffy. Soon as you revealed for sure she was an Elkhound my eyes filled with tears as I remember my sweet girl. Thank you for your channel, it has given me many hours of joy. My first animal love will always be dogs. :D

Had an Elkhound as a kid. Glomen was a super cool dog. He never got dirty. First time we washed him, he looked at us like, "what are you doing? I don't need this." The water coming off was completely clean. Excellent coat to put your toes into on a cold winter's morning, but man could he shed!

It's been found by archeologists of Norse/Viking settlements that the "wool" fibers they use often had a very high percentage of dog fur - the undercoat of many dogs has been found to be warmer than wool! Freya here would be a perfect example of where they'd get that fur from :D

I've often wondered about that as I'm grooming my dog. I think after a few months of daily grooming we'd have enough to knit a jumper - and it's so soft, much softer than wool. Not that I'm going to try it!

My family’s first dog, in the late 1960s, was a Norwegian Elkhound named Freya. My mother would fill paper shopping bags with her shedded hair and give it to a woman who spun it into yarn. Our second dog was another Elkhound named Thor’s. She lived to be 16 years old. Her best friend was our orange and white cat.

They are not always the best choice. They are very noisy (nature of the breed, used to alert hunters). They also need plenty of room to run. Like many northern breeds, excess weight can be a problem. Our family had several elkhounds. I love the breed but wanted to point out common issues.

I used to bath a couple of these when I was a groomers assistant. One of them was so so elderly and had a few giant festering lesions that caused him quite a bit of pain but he was too old to get them removed. Regardless of his health at that point he was so gentle, and accepting of the process despite how uncomfortable he had to have been. This breed definitely has a place in my heart.

When we were kids, there were 7 of us, we had what we were told was a Finnish Elkhound, but I have looked over the years at different breeds & realized that it was a Norwegian Elkhound. We called him Mike & he always got called Mike Mike the motor bike, he would chase them & keep up to them😂 the best part of him was how he took care of each one of us younger 4 children. I guess you would call it his herding skills, but he would follow the ones he thought would get lost & bring them back home by grabbing their pants or the sleeves of their blouses & tug at them or he’d stay with you until you went home with him. My mom or dad would tell him to go find us for dinner when we were outside somewhere playing & he would go running & sniffing until he found us & bark at us to go home, we knew what he wanted so we would just do it. He was the best dog we ever had & we had dogs all the time because my mom bred Pomeranians😁 we also had cats, rabbits & birds all at the same time, we were never short of pets😁❤️

Thank you for presenting Freyja!! I had often wondered if, or when, you would have a Norwegian Elk Hound make an appearance. I have been fortunate to have had 4 of this fantastic breed in my family over the years. They are intelligent, great family dogs and generally a treat to be around. Though they can be stubborn at times, they do well in most any situation. I will say, yes, an Elkhound will shed constantly, about half a dog a week. In the spring, that will more than double while they blow their winter coat, but brushing and combing them they consider part of the bonding ritual. I miss my boys and girls, having had 2 of each. The stories of their antics are a staple still in my family gatherings, and could fill volumes. Needless to say, I knew what breed walked through that door before you even gave the challenge. Thank you again for bringing a shining star to my day. Did you put a longer video on your 2nd channel?

Freyja is such a well behaved girl! I guessed the breed when she walked through the door and I was grinning from ear to ear when I saw her - although her head is very dark for the breed, their broad frame and curly wurly tail is very distinct for Norwegian elkhounds. I might have a slight advantage though, as an owner myself. My 3,5 year old Norwegian elkhound Tinka sends her best regards. Tinka helped us bring down a moose today and is very proud. And you're not kidding about the shedding, it is known among owners that if you walk into a home where a grey elkhound resides, your socks will look like wooly slippers instantly. Although they're heavy seasonal shedders, if fed correctly they are easy to groom and rarely get compacted.

I was wondering if anyone would notice, yes she does have a uniquely dark face for her breed! We call her our little bat girl, her pointy ears and teeth make her look like a bat to us haha

I don't know if it's just me but I'd really love to see another one of the cleaning up bits after a groom. I just like watching the cleaning and before/after of a shop like that, it's so satisfying.

Years ago, I had friends who were into Northern breed rescue, such as these, malamutes, and they did have a Norwegian Elkhound that was looking for a home and he went by the name of Iggy. Iggy barked like a seal, and if I would have been able to take him out the time, I would have. He looked like the kind of dog that you would put a bandana on and play Frisbee with, he was awesome!

Yay, I got it right! And she absolutely is an adorable darling! I fell in love the moment she walked through the door 💕 As you blow & brush out clean fur, you could find out if anyone in your area spins wool. I know that some people will knit in anything, even dog fur! It should lower your refuse bin costs lol. My dad kept rabbits, including longhair breeds like angoras, when he was a kid (back in the late 1930s), and his sisters (then, either side of 10 years old) would help him brush them (he had over 100!) and would keep, wash & spin the loose fur, then they'd knit scarves and gloves for the next winter. He was initially one of 7 kids (sadly two brothers didn't live to their teens), so that sort of money-saving work was essential. Some people are just knit-mad and will try anything new materials-wise, so you never know!
