    I'm so proud of this ship. I've never been much for national pride but the way this project reaches back into our history, and doing it as a way of reaching out to the whole world, it almost makes me a bit teary eyed. I've only the greatest admiration and gratitude for those who've participated in it.

    I visited this replica ship when I was 7 years old when it docked in Porth Elizabeth harbour. So wonderful to be reminded of this beautiful ship 13 years later!

    Modern Vikings. Vikings didn’t just raid. They also explored and traded. That Captain if you put him in an outfit from back then would probably fit in fine lol.

    Build a ship like this in only 18 months, about 300 years ago sounds really fast.

    Been a big admirer of tall ships for close to half a century now but how does the Götheborg truly replicate the voyages of its namesake with all the modern equipment on board, not least of which are engines for propulsion?

  • @vendist

    @vendist

    The engines are there to make sure the ship can get out of trouble if needed. AFAIK 99% of the time the engines aren't used and the ship is powered by her sails only, just like in the old days. Same thing with for example radar on board. How do you replicate the empty oceans of 200 years ago today? You can't so instead you need radar to avoid collisions. Doesn't take anything away from the sailing experience in my opinion.

    I'm pretty sure that vessels over a certain size (tonnage) are required to have on board, the means to avoid collisions, call emergencies, plot and report position.

    It must have a radar to comply with the internation safety laws regarding sailings ship. Many replicas of various ships have been built but many can't leave the dock since they dont comply with the safety laws.

    Dude, they literally said in the video that there is a shit ton of replica ships but they can't just sail to China because of safety regulations. That's all I got to say since the people before me already pointed out everything else that can be said about this matter.
