The Surprising Relevance of Engineering in Biology

Ғылым және технология

Scientist Brian Miller explains the intriguing story of how biology is beginning to adopt more design-based models in its research. Although it's true that many biologists still offer lip service to unguided evolution, engineers and biologists are actually working together to change the way we view how life developed.
Dr. Miller is Research Coordinator at Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Duke University. More about him and the articles he has written can be found here: www.discovery.org/p/miller/
This talk was presented at the 2022 Dallas Conference on Science and Faith in January 2022.

As a generality, I think that those professions like engineers and physicians have far less difficulty recognizing design than biologists. Partly because one’s career is jeopardized by not having an allegiance to macroevolution and partly due a blindness to the teleological view because they do not look at function the way an engineer or physician does. Every summer, I take joy in observing birds, particularly barn swallows. I am a former Marine Corps aviator and I can tell you that no human can fly an aircraft the way a barn swallow flies. From nest building to transitioning to a precise landing from flight is nothing short of very precise hardware and software.

This was an excellent presentation. As a pathologist, I began to question macroevolution several decades ago. Not long after, Denton, Wells, Behe and others affirmed that my skepticism was well justified. Stephen Meyer amplified that doubt into conviction. How anyone can deny the teleology in biology affirms what the Apostle Paul wrote, that one has to repress the knowledge of our creator. The mind of God gives me chills.

Perhaps he could enlighten us as to the nature of the precursor state of energy that exploded into the universe we inhabit, since that seems, in his judgment, to have something to do with the presumptive acceptance of undirected evolution as an inarguable truth.

I would like to hear if materialists are putting forth any new explanations for this new engineering data and then hear a refutation. This may be a turning point for intelligent design theory. I imagine that as intelligent design gains ground there will be a correlative increase in interest and belief in aliens among the scientific materialists in order to provide the designers.

How does Magnus Carlsen's phenomenal talent in chess relate in any way to his need to continue to exist? For that matter how does Reiss's creation of the book have anything to do with his continued need to exist? Of course we are willing to pay people for such things because we value what they do, but there is a long gap between producing the food they need to eat and their actually having that food. How does evolution mindlessly create the talent to do these things with the hope (?) that there will be someone willing to pay for them and so to enable the person to purchase food from people who actually produce it so they can survive? Would it not be more parsimonious for evolution just to produce farmers and eliminate all the uncertainty?

The exhilaration I feel when I learn that those impugning the designer simply weren't "smart enough" to see how ignorant they really were (think the reverse-facing retinal cells conveying light while protecting the delicate sensors) also vindicates the unique history and methodical working of God in history. Every Bible character, every human event was known and necessary to achieve a certain end, our salvation in the glorification of Christ. The fact that there is only ONE way to "come to the Father" (John 14:6) parallels the uniqueness of biological, geological and cosmological design. We can't have it "our way" precisely because someone else has had it HIS way. All praise to Him!

The debate about evolution vs ID is merely an instance of a much wider debate: whether or not the material universe atests to a creator? Each side uses the same data to argue for different conclusions. Dawkins and company insist that "there is no evidence" in the material universe for the existence of God. On the other hand Christians (and adherents to many other religious traditions) assert that "The world is charged with the grandeur of God." (Gerard Manley Hopkins). Clearly, the raw data is not a strong determinant of whether someone will change their point of view. Rather, it is life experiences & baggage that an individual brings to the discussion that is the best predictor of how that person will interpret the data.

One of the problems with the engineering model for biology is that one must account for the fact that mosquitoes and malaria were also engineered. The combination kills millions of children. This channel does a good job presenting their case that random mutations can not explain nature. Now one must question why a loving God who loved the world so much he gave his only begotten son as a sacrifice and is all knowing would have inflicted this on mankind. This is not a question of whose fault it is, rather does the Christian and Jewish religions make sense? Explaining away the critics on the subject of Noahs Ark by saving the kinds and then an explosive diversification and world wide spread of those kinds and then saying DNA cannot change on its own is ridiculous. Science and Religion have one major thing in common. Both sides are filled with humans and both sides regardless of what they tell you believe what they want to.

Note to atheist materialists: 1. You had best keep engineering concepts AWAY from you. 2. You need to spend more time and money refuting the Big Bang because that limits the amount of time for materialism to explain phenomena of all types. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

Mike (no longer of San Jose... California being lately best viewed in the rear-view mirror, congratulations)... Some astronomers/ cosmologists and physicists have come to question secular materialism because of the apparent design of the cosmos, i.e. the implications of fine-tuning in the physics, becoming at least deists, and some coming to Christianity. Science, without materialist presuppositional baggage, leads to much evidence of order and design. To counter this, and that at a level which begins to appear as willful denial, the secularists love to spout "God of the gaps". Fine- tuning in physics, cellular complexity, DNA as coded information, irreducible complexity within cellular structures, integration of organ systems within organisms, etc., are not gaps, they are the things that are. The inference of intelligent design is rational from the things that are, the facts and data. The gaps seem more problematic for the secular materialists, for whom either evolution is a gap-filler (the incomplete fossil record... explains the missing links, but they must have existed because evolution tells us they did, so the circle goes) or "I don't know, nobody does, because of the limits of current knowledge" which a materialist seems to find satisfactory, a cognitive vacuum being acceptable as long as the possibility of a Creator (inferentially evident in the facts) is precluded from the discussion. God is not in the gaps. God is evidenced in the facts. Gaps seem to be a secular problem.

A Bit Off Topic (not that I've ever let a little thing like that stop me :-) ) IF there is No Creator and all this happened purely by random chance, and it has no meaning. I have a small question. Why did John Gotti die in prison? Remember no moral argument is allowed. Only evidence from the natural world allowed.

Great stuff. Unfortunately you may have to start by defining "woman" to your students. Man has a sin problem, not an information problem. (Thanks to talks like this that anyone with a smartphone can access).

There seams to be a simularity with how God designs and how man designs. More proof that we were made in God's image!

There are lots of gods. When scientists give up and admit that life, and the universe, had to be created by a supernatural being(s), the majority of atheists will embrace theism. But that does not mean they'll turn to Christ. Very few will follow Christ. Most will put their belief in whatever pagan god that lets them continue to behave just the way they always have. And when the anti-Christ shows up, nearly everyone will believe him.
