Jean Terrell could sing. I am guilty of being one who abandoned this new group. After the departure of Florence Ballard and Diana Ross. Today. I wish I had not done so.

After the changes started, that was it for me! I'd be looking at the album covers saying: who is this!?👀 But I do agree that all the ladies could sing. 👏🏽

Can't remember ever seeing this newspaper bit. 👀 If so, it's been years since I've run across it on KZread. Edit: Mary, Sherrie and Cindy nailed the opening choreography for "All I Want."

So Very Kind of Sonny And Cher to Invite The Group to Their Show Without Diana Ross Still in The Mix !!...This Wonderful Archival Footage of The Group is Vivid Proof That The Inevitable DEATH of The Group After DIANA'S Departure Was Not INSTANTANEOUS As Many History REVISIONIST Would Try To Have You BELIEVE !!!......

That is Cindy. The Supremes line-up at this time was Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong (replacing Lynda Lawrence) and Scherrie Payne, who replaced Jean Terrell.

People always think of Cindy as just a background voice, but given the right material, she could step up to the front. I mean, you can stand and just look pretty singing with Patti Labelle, Diane Ross, Jean Terrell, and Scherrie Payne

The group actually sounds more rounded with Jean Terrell as lead singer. She proved that they could go on without Ms. Ross. Unfortunately when Jean left the line-up, the "Supremacy" of the group came to an abrupt end.

I think it started even before she left. Those fort three 70s albums seemed to be looking to.re-brand the Supremes as a more r&b act, bit the material was always inconsistent, which eventually led to Jean and Lynda leaving the group. Without good songs, tje groups never really found a consistent identity or brand. Which is a shame because they did some really fine work, right up to the end, but after 1971, a lot of ppl stopped checking for the Supremes.

The version here of All I Want is really poor. Probably the only performance of Scherrie, Cindy and Mary together I dislike. The only good point is Cindy's solo part. She has a beautiful voice.

Cindy truly had a beautiful voice. Listening to her in this clip, she would have been great singing some of the earlier Supremes hits in their live shows. I also think she would have sounded good singing lead on their early 70s hits. I can totally imagine Cindy singing lead on Up the Ladder to the Roof and Stoned Love. Mary's voice was also excellent, though not really right for the material The Supremes sang at their height. Mary's voice had a lot of charisma when they hit the right part of her range.

they were good but not great and the difference, the HUGE difference was the vastly greater singing and performance talent of Diana Ross. Ross was certainly a willful, calculating, smart ass (but also very very smart) prima donna, but she was so exceptionally talented and refined that talent to such heights that she made this otherwise vary capable lead seem just mediocre. For those that have tried, its simple not possible no matter the level of effort, to compete with the very best, we learn the hard way that the reality is we are not all equal not by a long shot, the very best keeps us all humbled but awed and yes very grateful for those that provide such exalted inspiring examples ;-)

I think Jean Terrell and Scherrie Payne had better voices, as did Florence Ballard. All three of the original Supremes had charisma and great stage presence. In later years, Mary was a better performer than Diana, too.

@@davidmoody1235it’s you who needs ears cleaned. Jean Terrell certainly had a better range, power and diction to her voice than Diana. You all love giving Diana too much credit! When Jean joined the group she literally gave them continued success and some memorable successful singles. The only reason there weren’t more was due to Berry Gordy and the company not supporting them by this point. That is the only reason. In fact even when Flo was apart of the group there were more interviewers who were charmed and captivated by her than Diana Ross. There’s many of performances you can see where Diana Ross is jealous of this and at some point it’s also why the interviewers or host of shows weren’t really allowed to speak to other singers and Diana only. Flo was even slated to be apart of a movie and Berry quickly put a stop to that and insisted it be Diana. It was a comedy movie team who approached Berry about Flo.
