I live in a rural and have all the critters, so I only put yard debris in my compost pile-leaves, grass clippings, small sticks. It takes a few years to break down, and I was finally able to use some of my compost this year in my vegetable garden and on my garlic patch. Veggie plants are thriving and I’ll be harvesting garlic later this weekend or early next week. Thanks for sharing your gardening knowledge-I learn so much from you. 😊

As a new subscriber, I’m enjoying your videos. I may have misunderstood about your plan for the ‘designated’ garlic bed, but as someone who does grow garlic along with a veg garden, I want to mention that you should not continue to use the same bed for any vegetable year after year. To prevent specific bugs, crop rotation is key. Do not plant beans following a garlic crop, and do not plant garlic in that bed for 3 years. I use a 4 year rotation cycle for my 8 raised beds and that works very well. Good luck, and thanks for your videos.

Here in Central California we are in the middle of a massive, devastating heat wave, the lowest temperature for the forseeable future is at least 111 degrees. The battle is waging to keep plants alive. There are many plants that love the dry heat but even this is too hot. Enjoy your beautiful garden.

Having a compost is an individual preference, and having one or not having one doesn't determine if you are a gardener or not. 😊 You are definitely a gardener who has created a Beautiful place. 🌸 Also, just a side note, I totally agree about rodents. 😉

Hi Linda, I want to thank you so very much for your kind words, and acknowledgement of the time and effort it takes to produce a video. Its summer, and most people aren't working in their gardens, or watching much KZread at this point. As such it can be disheartening to put out a video that doesn't perform as well. I was up really late last night, spending somewhere around 6 hours editing this video (plus the few hours it took to film). Which I really love filming and producing these videos to share, so I'm not complaining. All this to say, that it really does take creators a really long time to film and edit the few minutes that end up in a finished video. Seeing your comment, hugged my heart. I felt seen and appreciated. Thank you so much for that. I hope you have a great holiday, and rest of your week. Thank you for being here, and watching 💚

@HookedandRooted Your video, besides being informative and helpful, gave me encouragement and made me feel like I am not alone. I am out by 7:00 am watering and deer proofing. I keep going until the sun and heat become uncomfortable. None of my neighbors seem to be doing any of this. You made me feel that those of us who are doing it are kindred spirits & hearts. We love our plants, our outdoor creations, and the beauty and life force of plants. I live in zone 7 in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. September is the harshest month where I live. It is hotter and dryer than August. So... September, although a beautiful month in its own right, better be ready for me because I will be watering (flooding ), deadheading, and battling small herds of deer in full force. I am so glad that you are out there doing it with me. I am subscribed to your channel and watch all of your videos, and enjoy them. I do realize the huge effort that you make doing all of this. You are to be commended. Thank you so much.

I’m in complete agreement about not composting to avoid rodents. We’ve had gophers, possums, foxes, rabbits, etc. not to mention deer. A few years ago we bagged up and put the remains of a barbecue in the garbage bin and a raccoon still got in there. Your garden is looking lovely. Good idea about the garlic. It gave me an idea of how to use a raised planter.

I also have some white coneflowers that have reverted, not all of them. I have them encircling a Leonard Messel Magnolia. I’ve also seen evidence of Rosette mites, so I’ve been cutting the distorted blooms off and garbaging them. I believe you have a few blooms that look not quite normal, have you been reading about this and about Asters Yellow disease affecting echinacea?Fall cleanup would be cutting the plant down to the ground and into the garbage if affected by Rosette Mites. Aster Yellow affected plants have to be completely removed and garbaged. 😢

Good Day. Happy early July 4th. Just a little friendly reminder that the raised garden bed that you just filled and planted, when you grow garlic after each season of garlic it is like all other veggies and that is you need to do crop rotation. That is you can't use the same bed that you just pulled the garlic out of. So the garden bed that you just pulled the garlic out of would need a season of rest and growing something else. So this year the garden bed that you will be growing garlic in next year you will need to give it a rest in the season of 2026 however in the fall of 2027 you can plant the garlic in it.

So right now I'm hitting the ground running, but check on me around August when things may change lol. This year I've started dahlias, so I'm hoping they will keep me excited through the late season.

Oh my goodness how do coneflower do that!? In my last garden I had planted 3 different colors, side by side, maybe 2’ apart. Within a couple of years they were alllll, mother plants and babies, just 1 color. Always wondered why 🤔 Thankfully I was just happy that they were doing so well 😂 But I have never heard anything mentioned over the years until just now! Anyway, I’m pretty jealous of your gardens and those awesome raised beds. They are all just so beautiful and you clearly put a lot of time and live into them, and it’s wonderful!!
