“Subscribe ya bastads!!” That is a saying from a radio host who now does a podcast! lol. It is meant to be funny for anyone out there about to be offended! Steph, I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration and education from you & that’s why I subscribed several years ago. I am looking to add 1) bleeding hearts heliopsis (not really in my color wheelhouse but the dark foliage and stems has made me want some!) 2) Japanese anemone 3) some cultivar of daisies. I have none but had planted daisies 3 different times in my sisters garden (before I purchased my home) and all 3 died so I’ve been hesitant to try again, but I’ve decided I want to. & I would love some hydrangeas for beautiful end of summer pink and white blooms! I have 4 Bobo’s purchased on clearance at Lowe’s about 1 &1/2 months ago still in their nursery cans because I’m stumped on where to plant them… where exactly to make my next garden bed.. but that is all part of the joy of gardening! Thanks Steph for sharing with us today! 😊♥️

Stacey, I just laughed at your comment lol, Thank you for the support 💚 So glad your here! As for the bleeding hearts heliopsis, I'm with you. Its also not generally my color preference, but I was contemplating where I could make them work as they were sooooo pretty!! YES to the Anenomes, GORGEOUS! Daisies are always a good choice. A quintessential garden flower 🌼 Try the shasta's they are pretty hardy, and in fact can spread a bit. I hope you find a great spot for your bobo's, they are a gorgeous hydrangea. Fall will be a great time to find a home for a new bed. Mine handle sun pretty well if they get enough water. Last year when we had lots of heat and drought, they got a little burnt, but this year with the extra rain, FABULOUS!! so if you have a part sun, or more wet spot, it would be ideal for them. Have fun! and thank you for watching.

This a great list. I have most of the plants on your list and would definitely agree with your recommendations. I've recently added the cardinal flowers with dark foliage. I have some very wet areas and the green foliage ones thrive so hoping for the same with burgandy. My blue fortune agastache bloom from June until frost and deer and rabbits don't eat them.

Two not-so-green thumbs up for Blue Fortune Agastache! It’s a blooming powerhouse and pollinator magnet both in my dry, all-day, full-sun garden AND my parents’ woodland garden that only gets afternoon sun. I thought for sure it wouldn’t take at my parent’s house but it’s thriving in all 4 locations we’ve tried it in, even though the environments differ quite drastically (albeit both the same zone). And we only planted them late last summer and they’re all full-sized already, so also a fast grower. And a great vertical element in cut flower arrangements!

A note: when writing species name it's a convention to write Genus name in uppercase, and species name in lowercase, so Echinacea purpurea. There are some variety names (written in uppercase) that use Latin also, so to avoid confusion. For example Veronicastrum virginicum Album.

Eupatorium chocolate prefers moist alkaline soil. Lobelia cardinalis require moist acid soil or won't thrive. I think soil ph and moisture requirements are vital but most people don't consider them, and it isn't generally stated in plant labels because nurseries just want you to buy their plants.

Great video!! Are black eyed Susan’s more of a summer or fall perennial? I’m looking for some and don’t see them at garden centers to buy?? Your videos are so helpful. I’m just starting out in my new yard.

Thank you! They are a mid/late summer and some can last through fall. There are a couple of varities out there. American Gold Rush, and Goldsturm being among the most popular. There are also some that have different heights and bloom size. In researching rudbeckia it appears that the fulgida varities are the longest blooming. I have rudbeckia/black eyed susans recently at Home Depot and Lowes garden centers. They typically show up in their garden centers mid to end of July, but I've seen some there even just last week. I hope you can find some near you.

I came across some new agastache that had the prettiest color called “Meant to Bee™ 'Queen Nectarine' Anise Hyssop Agastache hybrid” I’m in love with the the color and the slight minty scent is a plus. I usually wanted to only plant “purple/lavender shades” of perennials but adding some colors of soft peaches/complimentary shades now. Thanks for the videos and tips- and I’m learning lots about planning a garden/landscaping that will bloom at different times for me so I can enjoy them before snow ❄️ comes 😭

Oh that one is beautiful Mari! its got a beautiful color way. I love the scent as well. I also adore purples paired with peaches/apricots. They look beautiful. If you can find "Tutti Fruity Apricot Delight" yarrow, its stunning! As is the Supreme canteloup coneflower. If you keep planting flowers throughout the season, something will always be in bloom going forward. Thanks for watching! 🌱

Hi Leanna, thank you! I tried to include that information on the detail slide for each plant. Going off memory most of these were described as rabbit resistant on Google, with the exception of Asters (New England Asters seem to have a bit more resistance), and toad lilies (not ressitant). I have had rabbits nibble on my anenome buds. Fragrant plants like Russian sage and alliums they leave alone. Montauk daisies are also another plant that's easy to find they they don't seem to eat. They also leave my rudbeckia alone. Hope this helps.

Hi there! of the ones I showed in my garden, I did not grow any of them from seed. I did try Chelone from seed this year. My seedlings are tiny however. But hopefully they end up doing ok after some time. I do know that many of these varieties are available to grow from seed. Check out Swallow Tail seeds online. I have found them to have a very large selection of perennial seeds.

Hi there! most plants that bloom will require deadheading. You can leave blooms up, but if the plant goes to seed, and drops seed, it will create more seedlings. You could opt to plant shrubs, and foliage plants which will require less maintenance and still offer lots of beauty. Thank for subscribing!

Hi there, The best way I have found to keep them from getting eaten is to spray with Invisible Fence Deer & Rabbit. I do also utilize a product called deer training fence/wireless deer fence, which is effective for shorter front of the border perennials such as my daylilies for example. Here's links to both in case your interested: amzn.to/3QyaEPz Video about deer spikes: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKVmxbatZrbOaZc.html

Yes! Fall is a great time to plant perennials. You'll want to do that sooner than later, so in the next couple of weeks so that they can be tucked into the soil before the ground freezes. I'm in Massachusetts also.

Hi Barbara! I find that they do best if they have lots of sun. Also, they prefer soil that is drier and no fertilizing. These 3 things, full sun, drier and poor soil is what they prefer. However, doing the chelsea chop also helps them from getting too leggy. Hope this helps. I did a video on that this year, that you can check out here if you would like: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIymq66zhMa2ecY.htmlsi=IKe6aBendEVaj8hX

I’m so confused on the agastache. Here in northern Wisconsin, I can buy both little alder and blue fortune and the tag says they’re hardy in zone 4. The tags on the ones in the video say zone 6-10 (they’re the same variety as the ones here, blue fortune and little alder). It’s almost as if the zones are just estimates and like saying “eh, it might live in your zone or it may not”. It’s so confusing! I don’t have the money to be buying plants that *might* be hardy in my zone 😅 I loved the video though, and am going to give the lobelia a try 😊

  • @HookedandRooted

    @HookedandRooted

    9 ай бұрын

Hi Chelsea, I totally get that. I've had the same questions about plants at times. I'm with you, I also am cautious about plants that I'm not sure will make it. After all, we all have a budget. In cases like this what I usually do is, I'll google the plant, and take an average. If I see a plant say that its hardy from zone 4-9 and then another source rate it 6-9, I would say its likely that its hardy down to a 5 or 6. Sometimes you can push limits on plants slightly if you plant them in a sheltered/protected location such a south facing wall etc but its certainly tricky at times. Hope this helps.
