    David,..Bobo ( I have 12 planted), Little Lime and Vanilla Strawberry are my current go to hydrangeas. They all are magnificent bloomers and early to flower. This year I bought the new ‘dwarf’ hydrangea Fire Light Tidbit which also were heavy bloomers with smaller flowers (like Bobo) and looking forward to a full year head to head comparison next year. Early indications - and I may be wrong - is that Fire Light seems to change to pink a little quicker. They are beautiful, especially partnered in with the Pugster blue butterfly bush. Provides colour from June to October/November depending on when 1st hard frost hits. Continue to provide great winter contrast through winter. Oh, and yeah, another wonderful tutorial!👍

    So beautiful! The ones we have in containers are very floppy right now with the weight of their flower heads. Perhaps we over fertilized and maybe overwatered them. The ones in the ground are all upright and strong.

    Thank you for your kind comments, When they are growing strongly, in rich compost, with lots of nutrition and water, there is a tendency to produce rank growth which then bends with the weight of the flowers. So, try growing them "harder" with less watering and feeding, and if you do fertilize use a formulation that is low in nitrogen and high in Potash, that should stiffen them up.

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you, it is great to hear you are enjoying our efforts. As for fertilizer, it really doesn't matter that much as long as its a well balanced (N,P, K) formula and not over applied. Putting down to much can be detrimental. As you may have heard in some of our other videos, our plants are grown in a specially formulated compost that continues to feed the plants well after you plant them, so there isn't any need to apply fertilizer when you plant them. If you are looking for specific recommendations and guidance in your locality we would suggest you talk to the experts at your local garden center grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they will know exactly what options work best in your neighborhood.

    How would you advise to winter container hydrangeas?

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    The roots of garden plants are normally under the ground and therefore insulated from freezing solid, but of course when they are in pots the soil volume is surrounded by very cold air and therefore prone to freezing and causing root damage. That's why it is important to choose a large container, the bigger the soil volume, the less fluctuation in temperature changes (heat in summer / cold in winter). Panicle hydrangeas are very hardy (most are Zone 3), so you have my "rule of thumb" when deciding to overwinter things... and that's using ones that are rated two zones colder. Therefore, there's a good chance your plants will be fine but it is still well worth while to try to give them as much protection as possible. Some people (myself included) bring pots indoors to an unheated basement, cellar or garage. I do this as late as possible (usually early January), just before really cold winter weather hits. If this isn't possible, then tuck them into a sheltered spot (corner, tight against a wall etc), and consider wrapping the pots and the pot of the soil level with some insulation material to cut down on the temperature changes. Remember insulation material is not effective if it gets wet, so if you are using home insulation material (or something like that), then you will need to cover that to try to keep it as dry as possible. No need to cover the tops of the plants (stems, branches) etc. they can take the cold.

    David, it is my understanding that the Bobo hydrangea is now available in a tree standard form. The specimens I’ve seen all stand about +/- 3 ft tall after being planted. Being a graft, I’ll presume that the head of the standard will be similar to the shrub format as to size and how it carries its blooms. My question to you is, not knowing what the rootstock is, will the stem grow any longer such that the overall tree height reaches, say, 4 - 5 feet or will it be that the stem will only get thicker in time. Thank you in advance.

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    I am not surprised to learn that someone is trying to put Bobo on a "leg" and grow it as a standard (Tree Form). I have not personally seen it presented in this way, but it is such a good little plant, that I am sure people are experimenting with different ways to produce it in nurseries. European nurseries tend to favor grafting to produce standard forms (more so than North American ones), and I've seen some hideous (mature) results where the rootstock used, is way to vigorous. As young plants they may look fine, but the end result may have a trunk that is thick and out of proportion to the size and make up of the variety used for "head" (top of the plant). Often, this leads to incompatibility problems at the grafting union, which renders them weak and vulnerable to storm damage. So as you can probably gather by now, I am not a fan of this procedure. Better to train up a single leader as young plants, and then allow them in subsequent years to form a "head" to become a miniature tree form. But alas, because the plant is naturally dwarf and compact, this is likely to take longer and therefore make the plants expensive. To answer the last part of your question, if something is "top grafted" (which is what this procedure is called) the "leg" part will remain at the same height, unless of course "suckers" sprout from it to grow up through the head and revert to whatever the characteristics of the rootstock are.

  • @garage-guy207

    @garage-guy207

    @@OverdevestNurseries Thank you for the thorough and all encompassing reply. So it appears that, based on your reply, if you train the shrub to become a standard then its (the standard’s) maximum height will/should be that of Bobo’s natural growing habit of 36-42” and if the specimen you see is grafted then it will already be at it’s maximum height when presented for sale and the lifespan of the standard may be compromised by/dependent upon the rootstock.

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    The genetic characteristics of the variety remain the same. By training it on a single stem and given time (over many years) you might concentrate some of the growth into a slightly taller plant, but it isn't going to change much. Obviously if a rootstock is used the height is going to be determined from the starting point of grafting height.

    Garage-Guy has a valid idea. Also, perhaps your pruning (or lack of) could be the problem. On this channel are 2 or 3 very good videos about when and how to prune these types of hydrangeas so that your stems will be strong.

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Thank you GarageGuy & Soccermom, some good advice here, I would add that maybe, you should consider easing off on the fertilizer (including lawn fertilizing) and any automatic watering to try to grow them a bit "harder"! Even little Bobo is a strong, vigorous grower, and sometimes if they are getting "more that they need" they produce soft, rank, floppy growth that bends over in storms with the weight of the heads! I sometimes use a higher potash fertilizer formulation (rose or tomato formulations) to help harden up the growth, but in most cases, they get all they need from an average garden soil, which is why in our videos, I suggest a little slow release fertilizer early in spring and that's it!
