The Sultanate of Women: Nurbanu Sultan & Safiye Sultan

Ottoman Sultans kept a harem of hundreds of enslaved concubines to bear their children. But from 1533 to 1656 a handful of remarkable women bent the harem system to their wills and exercised extraordinary political influence and power. This period is known as the The Sultanate of Women.

    Haven't been here in a while but I'm SO HAPPY to see that you have continued to put out content related to other ethnic groups! I have to ask, has researching these different kindoms/succession lines been enjoyable for you? In that time where women had no education and only wait for marriage. Being in a harem was a great thing because you either become a sultan women and become rich and have high rank or you can have other jobs inside the harem in exchange of salary, education and jewelry with luxury. When they get old they marry pasha which are men of the states. In that time many women would Wish to be in the harem and not now. The channel owner made mistake calling them sexual slavery because not all concubines in the harem had sex with sultan, beauty is not enough also. They cared more about talents and the mind, the harem women had education and tasks not just roaming around. Many people from the west are confused or some just refuse to believe because Europeans seem to hate ottoman empire since they were stronger than them

Judging from the fact that Halime's firstborn son, Sehzade Mahmud was born as Sultan Mehmed's heir and later having birthed Sehzade Mustafa, who was younger than Sultan Ahmed; i think Mehmed must have preferred Halime more than Handan. Similarly however, Halime and Handan also have two daughters but their information is completely concealed, we don't know their names either; so Sultan Mehmed must have spent near enough of equal time with both women. Unfortunately Handan died of the same stomach issue that later killed Sultan Ahmed, she didn't tenure long as Valide Sultan and as a result Kösem was easily enpowered into harem management.

Mihirmah retired when her nephew Murad became Emperor. It is then when Nurbanu got power. Until then, Mihirmah dominated her. But even then, Murad III respected his aunt very much and always sought advice from her. When she died, he was devastated, he held a grand funeral and burial for her in a magnificent tomb. Moreover, Mihirmah trained his wife Safiye against Nurbanu 😂. Mihirmah was the one who gifted Safiye to Murad ..

    The most i feel sorry for is Kösem Sultan, but she was what the palace made her to be. She had to take power or else she'd lose everything she had, in exchange for power she gave up her soul. She lost her love and husband at a young age, she had to suffer the loss of Sultan Osman who she loved a lot; even though he was her stepson she had a good relationship. She lived half of her life in Old Palace completely isolated from her sons and the death of Sehzade Mehmed; who may or may not have been her son, so she worried for the lives of her own sons as she felt Osman might kill them to. She then had to crown Murad and fight Halime Sultan TWICE. She had to suffer being seperated from her children, eventually she became mad and ended up being strangled to death after losing all her sons. A really sad story 😭

Isn't it a little self explanatory that these women were not sexually abused; if that was the case why did these Sultans legally marry their wives out of love? Do you mean to say Hürrem was raped? She started this whole time period. What has COVID got to do with the Sultanate of Women? LOL.

    I would suggest watching "Magnificent Century" first. It deals with Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Hürrem Sultan, the first concubine to ever be married to a Sultan AND the first haseki. Then watch "Magnificent Century -Kosem". They are a few generations apart but this way you will have a bit of the background.

    I find it a bit weird that sultan Murad was faithful to Safiye for many years and suddenly changed his mind and started affairs with a lot of concurbines. Does anybody know what the concrete reason for this behaviour was? In the end he produced too many sons who just lived to be killed by their eldest brother. What a horrible "tradition".

  • @lalywindland5764

    @lalywindland5764

    It was said that his mother fed him powerful aphrodisiacs so he could perform his duties to the other concubines. Because back then it was a sultan's duty to have as many concubines and kids as possible. Some sultans preferred monogamy, ironically, while European monarchs had a duty to their queens but usually preferred to have mistresses. Also, the favorite concubine of a sultan was usually competing with his mother for influence, but the mother Valide had more power, so Nurbanu might have forced or threatened Safyie to accept his son's other concubines. Nurbanu's sudden death may have been by Safyie's poison. Anyway, while the 19 spare sons were killed, some say that the 19 included Safyie's youngest son, over 20 daughters were married off to noblemen to consolidate the dynasty's power.

    Bayezid was executed on the orders of his father. Sulieman was alive. his father moved them to different provinces to govern, Selim obeyed immediately but Bayezid hesitated. his father called him a rebel. Selim led an army against him with the help of Sulieman. Bayezid fled to Iran. the ruler of Iran eventually handed him over to the Ottomans who quickly executed Bayezid and all of his sons. Sulieman was still sultan when he died. Sulieman was the one bribing and offering treaties for the handover.
