Ottoman Sultans kept a harem of hundreds of enslaved concubines to bear their children. But from 1533 to 1656 a handful of remarkable women bent the harem system to their wills and exercised extraordinary political influence and power. This period is known as the The Sultanate of Women.

Harems were anyway respected. The name suggest 'haram' which means prohibited. Men were not allowed to enter and all women were educated while in there and taken care of like princesses. The only difference is that Chinese Harems had women from high-born families, they were sent as gifts to the emperor, while Ottomans brought in non-Muslim slaves and converted them (a rather gruesome way). This was mainly due to the possibility of power-grab by noble families. These women had no strings attached, so the empire wasnt threatened.

  • @cinna_sultan

@@afrahf9010 This is true, the ranks and systems of the Chinese harems have always varied based on the dynasties that ruled such as Ming, Tang and Qing. The Ottoman customs of the harem remained the same; although political influence of the Ottoman harem varied depending on the Valide Sultan. Later on, the title of Haseki Sultan was no longer used and only royal women by blood and the Valide Sultan titled herself as a Sultana; not any consorts or concubines once they had a prince. They were titled' 'Kadin' or 'Iqbal.' Other then that, the Ottoman harem ranks rarely changed; although after the Sultanate of Women the new Tulip era changed the classification of consorts.

And Muslims couldn't pray then at home. But with a cat at home they can pray. And it is sunnah to take care of cats. (sunnah are called things that were done by the Prophet Muhammed sav., so that are considered good deeds). But of course Muslims have to treat all animals good. It's just about which animals you can have at home and which not. Nowadays Cats are still adored in Turkey.

It really makes you think about what is more important: cultural identity, or food and education? Lindsay talks about haram women being educated as though it's a negative thing. "The women could lounge in oppoulant luxury, but could only occassionally see the sea 🥺" "The women were educated by older women of the haram, and had access to books otherwise forbidden to Muslims." How awful! 🥺

One second a girl can only become Haseki after they gave birth to sultan's child.Kosem received the title at 1605 and Murad was born at 1612.Even if we think she received it after birthing her first daughter she wouldn't not received the title at 1605 because her first daughter was born between 1605/1608,the only male born at 1605 was Sehezade Mehmet so probably he was kosem's first child.

Well..not really. The title of Haseki changed with time, at first you can only become a Haseki if you legally married the Sultan (Suleiman invented the title for his wife Hurrem) but the other Sultans (Like Ibrahim the mad who had 8 hasekis) diminished the value of the Haseki title and started giving it to many women💀 Haseki means "chief consort of the Sultan or the one who belongs only to the Sultan" but then after Suleiman died Haseki was the equivalent to imperial consort and many women could be consorts💀

@Women's rights was a mistake No she didn't... For a woman in an Islamic country what she did was impressive; she kept the Ottoman Empire afloat in times of turmoil. They tried their hardest and that's a magnificent thing; I don't see how she did any little at all. This period started off as closed off harem ladies never seen or heard of; until suddenly Ayse Hafsa Sultan appeared one day and led successors such as Hürrem, Nurbanu and Safiye to document their success and lives, establish buildings in their names and much more. Won't see any of this in Saudi Arabia's history; or for any modern Islamic country except for Rania of Jordon and the former Iranian Queen, the least you'll see on them are runaway princesses.

What ever happened to the daughter's of the sultan? You never hear of any. It's odd that most sultans have almost no Turkish blood. Their mothers almost always being east Europeans or Greeks and their wives the same, as the sultanate progressed they became more and more of Christian European blood and less and less ottoman turk.

Most daughters were lost to history since they too were a part of the harem. Since is little to no information on the daily life of the harem life was we can say that the sultanas were usually married off to pashas or aghas. Some stayed in the palace for the rest of their lives.

@@slinger7529 By then the Turks had adopted European style primogeniture. It was no longer possible for the sons of concubines to be considered legitimate. But farther back you'd be hard pressed to find a Sultan who was more than a quarter turk. Look at Suliman The Magnificent. It got even more europeanized after him. It got so bad few sultans even took wives from the Turkish noble class. The Turks eventually ended the power of the harem and the janisaries. The was a famous janisary commander who did the just thing and betrayed the sultan, returned too Christianity and harried the marches of the ottoman empire. He died free, Christian and of old age. I forget his name but his story is unique and inspiring. Turks suck wind.

@@slinger7529 yeah....in the late 19th century when the Turks oddly abandoned the harem successions for European primogeniture, your comment applies. Just not for the previous. 7 or 8 hundred years. What's you're point? That the ottomans finally had sultans more Turkish than European when their empire was at its end? Ok. So what?

@TLi ma o i would suggest you to research instead of spamming Death Sultan Osman the Young was strangled in Yedikule Zindans in 1622 Yedikule Fortress in 1685 One of the entrances of the Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, where Osman II was strangled to death by revolting Janissaries Yedikule Fortress in 1827 Seeking a counterweight to Janissary influence, Osman II closed their coffee shops (the gathering points for conspiracies against the throne) and started planning to create a new and more loyal army consisting of Anatolian sekbans.[9] The result was a palace uprising by the Janissaries, who promptly imprisoned the young sultan in Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, where Osman II was strangled to death. After Osman's death, his ear was cut off and represented to Halime Sultan and Sultan Mustafa I to confirm his death and Mustafa would no longer need to fear his nephew. It was the first time in the Ottoman history that a Sultan was executed by the Janissaries.[10] This disaster is one of the most discussed topics in Ottoman history. Hasanbegzade, Karaçelebizade, Solakzade, Peçevi, Müneccimbaşı and Naima dates, in the Fezleke of Katip Çelebi, detailed and some of them were narrated in a story style. [11] pasted from google
