The Success of the D-Day Landing | Colorized World War II

One of the main reasons for the success of the D-Day landings was the element of surprise, the incredibly huge invasion force, congregating along the south coast of England went undetected by German Intelligence. Hitler's Generals believed the stormy weather meant it would be mission impossible, and it almost was.

I rarely watch my completed work again.. but this prog is a bit special to me. I shot all the "now footages" as well as producing and narrating.. and it was humbling to walk those beaches and locations, La Cambe and the American cemetery are particularly moving. This month is the 80th anniversary of the turning point on the Western front and as I write these words, the very last few real survivors are in transit to honor their lost comrades, allies and friends. As their voices fade in real life, I feel a value to my work for future generations. "LEST WE FORGET".

13:34 Oh, so Churchill directed the United States to build him LSTs, did he? That is ridiculous on its face and this author has some nerve, in fact I might call him an f'ing idiot. Churchill was a slobbering drunk and had about as much military skill as he did social skill, which was just about zero. I say one more jackass statement like that and you get a thumb down, to be certain.

13:34 ...well at least you could get your facts coordinated. Churchill had nothing to do with the US producing LSTs and as far as I'm concerned the statement that you made at this timestamp was about as lame as a history rewriting slouch can be. I despise people who attempt to rewrite history or even worse take credit for those things that they had absolutely nothing to do with. What you've said here is a clumsily disguised and scummy attempt at drumming up unearned credit for something that Churchill had no involvement in. Such a typical British history revisionist. If you want LST's, go ahead and build them yourselves but don't claim that you were instrumental in making the US build them for you. We don't take orders from the crown and you don't get to claim credit for something that your country had nothing to do with. How incredibly offensive and obnoxious of you.

At this time, I would like to remember one American Soldier who was killed on a Normandy Beach (Probably on "Bloody Omaha".) His name was Donald Redmond, and he died on June 9th, 1944 (on D-Day Plus 3). He was 21 years old. Donald was my Cousin's Brother-in-law. That's really all I know of him. Almost ten years to the day later, on June 8th, 1954 -- I made my Debut into the World. Donald Redmond -- Rest In Peace.

Two of my cousins are career Army officers and served in Iraq and Iran. All that is to say I grew up greatly respecting and honoring the American military. But I also respect and admire the German fighting forces in WWI and II. Documentaries like this always tell only one side. It took 6 years and 50 countries to defeat the single country of Germany Think about that fact.

I see a lot of comments; but the Russians! First this video is from a British guy and he is telling the story from a British prespective. Second this is about D-day, not about Stalingrad Third every German soldier and general biggest nightmare was a two front war on two sides. In world war I this was a nightmare and also for wwII. D-day was the end of the hope for the german fighters that they where able to win the war. That psychical effect was insane. The victory from the Allied forces was a combined effort of the UK, USSR and USA. Yes the russians lost by far the most soldiers, but that was also due to their military doctrine. The Americans send a very large number of trucks and other military equipment so the ussr can concentrate on the manufacturing of tanks. The English lost a lot of sailors (google for QB17) with their sea transports to Murmansk. After the war the communists forget to tell about this.

Thats a very strange comment. Stalin himself asked usa and uk several times for this second front. And the danger of this second front on a very large coastline was the reason the Nazis had a very large number of army division in Western Europe. When there was no (danger for a) second front, the Nazis had a much stronger defense on the Eastern Front. Maybe Stalin had the power to destroy the complete nazi army, but then the had destroyed 85% of his own army (and young people). I never underestimate the importance of the Russian forces on the Liberation, but there a some (political) historians that now are overrating the Russian impact.

@@Peter-dy9sp There are so many different factors and angles to debate. Stalin, like Hitler, was Pure Evil. On that, there is no debate. However, suppose we just change ONE thing: Say Hitler NEVER invades the USSR on June 22nd, 1941. After all, they had a Non-Aggression Pact from Aug 23, 1939. In that case, there would have been two or three million MORE German soldiers to "Greet" us on June 6th, 1944. Hitler would not have had to rely on Russian POWs to "guard" the beaches. (They would rather be THERE, than to be in Stalag 17!) Of course, they would surrender in two minutes! In such a scenario, with Hitler and Stalin as Allies, would we even ATTEMPT to land on Normandy??? Maybe we DO, but with a lot more than 190,000 troops. It would be "a whole New Ball Game".

I would suggest that the first few British attacks on Caen were defeats. It wasn't Montgomery's experience in WWI that permitted him to predict, it was the ability of Britain to read the Enigma codes using Ultra, particularly in the ability to hit Italian fuel supplies on their way to north Africa. It wasn't Eisenhower's job to control Patton and Montgomery in Sicily, it was Alexander's job.

At the 21:00 mark, you say that "Rommel was convinced of an Invasion at Calais (Palais De la Calais) and so kept troops there. However, in his book "THE LONGEST DAY", Cornelius Ryan (who interviewed American, British, French and Germans after the War), wrote that "on June 4th, 1944, Gen Rommel left Normandy for Berlin. He had two reasons for doing so. (1) Ryan said that Rommel wanted to ask Hitler if Rommel could transfer the 15th Panzer Division from Calais to Normandy! (Hitler was deceived by the Allied Deception, but not Rommel.) (2) Rommel's other reason was a personal one. He wanted to bring his wife a Birthday Present: a pair of shoes he had bought in Paris! When was her Birthday? On June Sixth! That is one of the things, if it were in a fictional story, would NOT have been believed!

Dreadful production. The CC do not come close to what is being said by the narrator and the music track is overwhelming everything. For such a historic event that will be recognized in a few days of its 80th anniversary, this documentary is an embarrassment and slap in the face to the men who gave their life on that faithful day and the days, weeks and months that followed.

The doco is fine.. ALL progs are "legalised" to broadcast standard.. there is something that the YT algorythm does that boosts music even though it is balanced in the stereo upload. It's a drag and does not suit my ears as the producer. It doesn't happen all the time. Caption system is nonsense. Not sure if that is Google or Best Documentary. Cheers..
