I've seen plenty of WW2 documentaries but this is, by far, the best one I've seen as it shows the real battle of Normandy and the humanity lost - on both sides. This should be required viewing in history courses. Outstanding.

Killing for various reasons is part of our DNA. Religion, vengeance, control, resources, greed....

Normandy got shot to pieces. Villages flattened, Caen and St Lo flattened by the heavies. Cherbourg harbour destroyed. Emphasised in the film. Most of the rest of France escaped a similar fate.

No mention of Operation Goodwood...

Normandy and all the battles on the Western Front combined were and still are child's game play when compared to Stalingrad.

What happened to all the dead Germans at the Chambois battle? 200K lost,did they put them in mass graves? Are these places marked today?

The narrator doesn't start off well by claiming the Normandy landings were a turning point. They weren't. The tables had already turned earlier in the war. Some claim after Stalingrad, others after Kursk and even some say that the momentum was gone as early as late 1941/early 1942, after Barbarossa had failed to decisively defeat the Soviets. Normandy was important, no doubt about that, but it wasn't a turning point.

Don’t forget the invasion of Italy (the soft underbelly of Europe). Once Italy capitulated and the Germans had to bring in more manpower to staunch the allied advance, liberation had already began.

8 minutes in and you’ve made serious mistake. Montgomery was In command of ALL land forces, British, Canadian and American. He held that command until September 1st when Eisenhower took over as Commander land Forces as well as Supreme Commander-Allied Expeditionary Forces. I know the Battle for Normandy is a huge complex story but this is pretty basic stuff.

There's a prevalent urban myth that les Francais don't much care for the yanks, and maybe it has to do with the Americans bombing France before D-day. Maybe it was necessary for strategic reasons, but les Francais couldn't have known that. Also les Francais surrendered quickly to the Germans at the beginning of the war in order to not have to fight the Germans in Paris.

Well, the Americans did not face Tigers at first place... They were all in the british sector... But, of course, Americans ONLY fought Tigers and Eightyeights...

The documentary keeps mentioning allied casualties. For context, it’s important to remember that the Germans suffered 100% killed, wounded, captured or surrendered from about 1943 until the war ended. And largely due to their drug addled leader’s psychotic delusions, died needlessly, in far greater numbers, because of their stubborn refusal to accept the inevitable.

Montgomery won The Battle of Normandy ahead of schedule with 22% fewer casualties than predicted. Montgomery’s successes are the stuff of legend. He was easily the most successful Western Allied ground commander of WW2 by some way. He too more ground through more countries while facing more quality German opposition than any other Western Allied ground commander. This is not opinion. This is historical fact. Montgomery was the most decisive ground commander the Western Allies had in WW2. You’re embarrassing yourself.
