Yeah, some of the leviathans in BZ COULD have been scary, but they made it impossible to avoid them, and this made it impossible not to notice that they were just harmless nuisances. Regardless of dangerous they actually were in SN, they were just howling in the distance, which let you think: don’t know that they’ll do to me, and don’t want to find out, Better just not get close….

Tip for any new players. You can make multiple 02 tanks and carry them to get deeper if you don't have the vehicles yet just switch out the tank in your inventory to get more air! I didn't think about that until after about 3 hours in the game had I thought if that sooner it would've saved me a lot of time.

Yes! You hear the harsh, rhythmic squeaking sound of the rusty old emergency light spinning as it periodically bathes the dank, pitch-black corridor ahead in a dull orange glow. You see a humanoid figure come into view at the very edge of your headlamp's illumination. Before you can react it turns towards you and vanishes from view right before your eyes. You ready your weapon but see nothing, and all you can hear is a deep, animalistic breathing, with dull, thudding footsteps coming closer, and closer, and closer... What could beat that?

Subnautica is both beautiful and terrifying, it’s perfect, the ocean as wonderful as it is, it’s also absolutely horrifying in the pure emptiness below you, you wait for something to jump out at you but, nothing happens, the suspense is horrific, it’s not even sea monsters that scare me, just the vast emptiness. That’s what makes subnautica great, it both shows the bright and colorful aspects of the sea, but also shows the dark and scarier stuff. Though it rewards you for diving deeper. The loneliness probably makes it worse.

I agree, subnautica is an scary game and the fact that its close to our fears in the real world makes it more scary. but the thing you said about phasmophobia well, phasmophobia is the same thing it scares you without even trying just the ambience. Yes there are some jump scares here and there but they’re all random.

Dude I totally agree with u about Subnautica being scary. It's cause u and I have Thalassophobia which is the fear of the unknown in deep waters which is much more common than most think. When I managed to play this game I didn't even make it past the creepvine area cause of the stalkers, and after one of the damn things followed me to the safe shallows that was it I was done. I've got the worst luck with any game that has some horror elements.

Seems too weird to me to describe it as horror, never found it really scary… I always found the ocean beautiful and awe-inspiring. Scuba dive once and snorkel at night once. Both were arresting (autocorrect…. Meant awesome or something, but that actually works too). Don’t have a hint of thalassophobia, apparently. But it is creepy and ominous AF, and perfectly captures the feeling of stranded and alone in hostile environment and running out of time. My first trip down the Lost River to get kyanite, in a Prawn with no upgrades, not sure if I could even get back up, or if I had enough water and fish to get back, especially if I got lost… Was one of the most tense and stressful and exciting experiences I’ve ever had in a game.

Instead I felt a different feeling going through subnautica, sheer awe and excitement at all the cool new places i was discovering (especially learning all the lore and creature info) that's why the environment and plausible (asides a few aspects) ecosystems became the reason I keep replaying the game.

I didn’t actually hate BZ… It was ok; just less good in every possible way, and from what I’ve heard, it was a deliberate choice to avoid or at least downplay everything that made the first one a hit.

Subnautica is the scariest horror game that isn't a horror game.

I have played subnautica only for a while, I just swim around the original life boat thing and then come back. Never played it after that, never encountered any monster. Nor do I intend to. Subnautica is a fantastic game, just not for me who cant stand horror lol. I am TERRIFIED of underwater monsters for some reason. Even in morning showers lately I have been scared of closing my eyes in the shower because I start imagining the subnautica monsters, I am not kidding.

It's really frustrating that you don't pick up the pda's and that you're not scanning most things because there are things that give you lore information when scanned

subnautica made me afraid of actual water. There was always stress getting in the boat ie games like far cry 3 but because of this game I now cant quite feel comfortable swimming in natural bodies of water ever.

Is the first part better than the second one (below zero)? I wanted to give it a try but can't decide between them.

It's funny how I went in blind and didn't even know it's a horror game. If I knew it's classified as one, I'd skip it. But the exploration element lured me in and I extremely enjoyed it

I play subnautica for over a month now in VR, but can't say it is horror... it is a nice game. What I thought is horror is "The Forest".

Jump-scares aint scary; that is a fact, just like horror movies are stupid as fuck, normal people watch thrillers and some of them make you question so many things in your life; Twin Peaks or Blacklist i mean take any thriller movie and there it is. Movies that got me into all that shit are three following; Paper House, The Shining and Shallow Grave. With all this in mind i can confirm that Subnautica is quite a scary game, not just Subnautica; Max Payne for me as a kid was something to move my bones around, some can argue that old nintendo games have something in them quite eerie even tho there is nothing in them to be so.
