    Great review, the "real" DRG begins when you have your first promotion (one character to 25 and finish the promotion assignment). Then there are machine events, overclocks and a whole new world opens up to you ;) Also always play DRG coop, even if it's with random online strangers. You forgot to mention the social aspect. The by far most important key is the "V"-key on PC. It makes your dwarf raise their pickaxe and shout an enthusiastic battlecry along the lines of "Rock and Stone!" or "For Karl!" - This is your main way of communication when not using the laserpointer to mark things or type in the chat, what makes you immobile for a moment. The mechanic is utterly positive and boosts the moral and level of fun of everyone involved. The community is one of the nicest I've ever seen in a video game. And the game has got beard physics. You know it's a great game when it's a 15 minute video telling you all the good things about the game and not even mentioning the amazing character customization options to make your dwarf your very own (including shiny gold skin, cus we all know we love the goooold!), as well as the way Ghost Ship Games monetize the game. It might be an odd point for a video about "why DRG is awesome" but it is amazing that every DLC they make is only visual, no gameplay is locked behind payment. Not to even mention the amazing update coming on the 4th. Made me worry when they talked about "Battle Pass", but it's all free and no FOMO as they intend on making everything accessable even after the season ends. This is the longest comment I've ever written and it's me fanboy-ing over a game, but it fits perfectly with this video I think. ROCK AND STONE!

You're gonna have to highlight/select something else when Bosco brings the mineral to you (or just grab it from) so he drops it. ALSO Bosco can build your pipes for you!

    Speaking of "unseen design choices" one thing that blew my mind when I found out was that blowing the head off the exploders will cause them to not blow up when they die, and you have a deceptively larger amount of time to do this after they come up to you and start hissing than you would initially think!

    I play with a group of four and this has got to be the most fun gaming experience I’ve ever had. We all use different classes and I main driller. It is amazing in so many ways. Even the small things, like being able to go ANYWHERE. Or the fact that you are almost never in a menu because everything you need to see is in the gameplay.

    It was free on PS+ recently and I tried it with friends and randoms alike. I've only played this for three days, bit it's great fun. I love the great amount of interactivity in the space hub. I even drank loads of alcohol with randoms and they fainted so I had to revive them. I've only played the mining, egg hunt and pipe missions so far, but I like them a lot. The different classes all have interesting gimmicks and I like them all so much that I can't decide which one I play, so I just choose randomly. Even if I don't really know what I'm doing in a mission I still can collect nitra or kill enemies so I do actually contribute to the team, despite being new to the game. Running back to the drop pod can be intense and yesterday only one of the four dwarves made it out. Deep Rock Galactic (the corporation itself) rely just doesn't care at all. Plus, kicking barrels and hearing the commander say: 'Stop it, NOW!' never gets old.

    I haven’t had an experience with a game quite like this. I was enjoying myself and thought the game was neat about an hour in. I decided to do one more mission and had fun. But I did another one. And another one. I kept having so much fun. I leveled up my engineer and learned the class as I played, without having to ask the people I played with, or google. I began using turrets and distracting grenades as well as my secondary heavy weapon to take out large hordes quickly, and varying my load out, so one weapon dealt with hordes well, and the other one could take out heavily armored bugs, with my turrets just doing general damage. So much fun, can’t wait to play more tonight.

    Nice to see some more love for this game. It is absolutely one of the best indie games in its genre currently. I feel its a bit of a shame though you didn't talk much / played much of co-op with randoms, as the community this game has and the interactions with its members is one of the games strongest benefits. The interaction between the classes are beautifully designed and everything about the game and its design philosophy aims to encourage teamplay and friendliness. I do hope you get to experience that side of the game in the near future. Otherwise, good review, nice to see you checking out this game.

    Greybeard here, been playing since pretty early on in early access. I remember the days of the old layout in the space rig. Still wondering if one day management will give us a firing range. But on another note, you honestly really hit the nail on the head here with this review. GSG are not perfect, but when they goof they fix it. They take care of their community and have helped foster a really warm, caring community for their game. I personally prefer to play with friends over doing open lobbies, but I know a lot of people that do open lobbies and have good experiences. Obviously at this time we just got update 35, Rival Incursion, which is arguably our largest update to date. It took a really long time for GSG to finally get this out the door, and it was delayed a good few times. But it's here, and it's good. And to top it all off, we have a season pass in the game now... That's entirely free. No paid component. None. Just play the game and get even more goodies (including more skins, the true endgame) for the pleasure of having done so. I'm honestly happy seeing this game of late get a lot more attention. GSG deserves the spotlight, and it's good to see you've enjoyed your time in the game. There's so much more for you to experience too. Rock and stone brother!

    DRG is probably the greatest co-op indie game out there imo and the more time pass the longer the list of why its so good keeps getting longer. Btw, "Extraction missions (I hate theses)" I feel personally attacked as it is one of my favorite mission type and I shall try to change your view on it somewhat. - it is one of the greatest mission for solo players as you can even complete 100% of them without shooting once as scout. - you dont need to go really far and the area is very open, making special powder scout and rocket jumpung engie feel in heaven. - you have the plateform turrets taking care of the swarmers. Some stuff I noticed from your gameplay that you might wanna know: you can order bosco to build pipelines. He'll do it until there is nothing left to build on the line. He can also carry large minerals for you (like aquar), so it isnt too painful for you to carry or harvest from the ceilings :) In any case, awesome video! Rock and Stone! PS: random matchmaking is never disappointing and everyone is always friendly so dont hesitate to go out of solo sometimes. Theres the official DRG discord which also have a special channel for people looking for people to play with. *and tbh im pretty sure you could ask anyone here to play with you if you want it will probably be mots of yes xD*

    Rock and Stone brother! Few tips for you. Always get Barley Bulbs, those are the ingredients that let you buy the stat boosting beers like Slayer Stout or Dark Morkite. Bosco is amazing and sometimes you don't want to deal with randos, but often times its not that bad and you can have some fun. At the very least you can enjoy the cosmetics of rando dwarves. Having more party members means easier traversal and better combos. The Engineer and Scout work great together because they can put platforms in those high up places where Scouts want to go collect. Driller can often dig straight to the drop pod, meaning you can avoid running back through the entire cave. Gunner shield bubble is a lifesaver, I always recommend getting the Medic perk on your gunner. Driller + Engineer = BUNKERING! For those missions when you have to protect a fuel refilling station or an upllink. Driller can dig underneath it, lay a C4 and make a cavern. Then just dig under the uplink and make it fall down into the cavern. Engineer can close up the holes and traverse easier with platforms, as well as setup mines & turrets. Just make sure there is only one way into the bunker. Bring along a gunner and watch dozens of bugs die in your killzone. Have fun! For Karl!

    As a player who is not yet a full greybeard, but not a greenbeard either, I can certainly say you are missing out quite a bit if you haven't unlocked weapon overclocks yet. Since you love engineer and bombing stuff, no doubt you will find the fat boy OC (literally a nuke) the best OC to be. Also, even if you don't have any friends who directly play the game doesn't mean you can't make any. I don't have anyone I personally know who play DRG, but made more than a plethora of friends from simply joining randoms. I know, on most multiplayer co-op games, sometimes joining random sounds like a terrible idea. But in the case of DRG, the opposite is true. If you don't join randoms, you ain't playing the game right. The community of the game is far better than any other multiplayer game I have played (and I have been an XBox live player, so I can assert to this claim). Frankly speaking, community-wise it sort of makes sense, as the game is far less about trolling (although if you do have friends to play with, then trolling your friend becomes mandatory) and more about just having fun. No game has ever made me feel this wholesome, and it was quite a really nice change to the community (previous game I invested a LOT of time into, and I am talking about 8 years, was WoT) being far more accepting and friendly. Trust me, join randoms. You will not regret any of it. Rock and stone, brother!

  • @bbbbbbb51

    @bbbbbbb51

    And the best thing about the cosmetics? The vast majority are locked only behind gameplay! No microtransactions! Just a few dlc cosmetics if you want to throw the devs some extra cash & get something out of it at the same time. If I'm honest, I've bought all the dlc cosmetics even though I rarely end up using them. The amount of free quality updates has me genuinely wanting to give the devs more money. In other games, that's not the case at all!

    Im going to say two things about this game. 1.I’ve convinced 5 people to pay full price for it, and we still play a few times a week six months later, so it’s gotta be decent at least. 2. He didn’t mention that the caves are randomly generated in one of ten biomes, so there are infinite unique missions, which get way better when he reaches level 25 and promotes. You get mini bosses in the missions, the deep dives, and unlock the weapon overclocks. Because how are you going to mine without the grenade launcher nuke, the ice mine mashinegun, a spiny plasma wheel of doom, or magic bullets?

    Noticed almost all of your footage was solo / scout. If you like the game in that context I strongly suggest trying to play more games with 1 of each class. The missions scale based on number of players so that the enemies are tougher and more of them with a full team. Makes it more exciting and gets you to focus on what your class does well and lean on your team for what they do well. Example is that Aquarq mission you didnt like. Platforms from engie, ziplines from gunner and a driller to drill out the buried stuff is a different ballgame.

    One other thing I'll add about the replayability of Deep Rock - Mission variety. As you mentioned, there's (as of Season 1) 8 different mission types, each with wildly different objectives and cave layouts. On top of that, there's 8 different secondary objectives, which while not as varied, still offer unique challenges. Then add in the 10 different biomes, each with their own enemy roster and environmental hazards. Mix in the 19 Mutators, 4 Machine Events, and other rare events like Korloks or Betsy that have a chance to appear, and you've got a lot of different things that could still surprise you every mission.

    Over 900 hours on PC and been putting in time on the recently released PS4/5 version with friends. I still love this game and play at least a few maps daily. Something I love about this game that your review missed is that the cave generation is really really good and the interactive holomap and laser pointers are works of art in terms of gameplay mechanics and functionality (laser pointer also hides so much more of that lovable DRG charm: “mushroom!” “We’re rich!”) As for the cave generation, I am often taken aback by some of the cave systems. Sometimes I’ll be down in the mines with a team and we’ll enter a new section and over comms you’ll hear everyone’s awe with what they’re seeing as a massive cave full of helical spires and crisscrossing mega crystals spans so far you can’t see the end, or the joy you get when a flare goes up from the Scout and your brain can drink in the full glory of the cave, instantly switching out of puzzle/piecemeal mode and into outright gape mode. One last thing, the devs love this game, they care about how it feels to play it. In Early Access there was a patch that overhauled the Perk and Movement systems (which was really fantastic, BUT) that at first felt like a slog. The base movement speed just slowed the game down a little too much and it actually affected the feeling of flow you get from playing this game. A few of us posted about it and the devs were like “yeah, we actually feel the same but didn’t have the words for what it was exactly, we’ll see if we can fix it” and they very quickly upped both player and bug movement speeds across the board and it felt great again. Instant flow states restored! Get this game, play it with friends, or if you don’t have friends, play it with a public lobby, the community on all platforms is really good, although PS4/5 community is in its infancy with tons of Green Beards, but if you’re just starting to play, you’ll be in good company!
