This anime straight up transcends the medium anime into being a total classic work of fiction in general imo. Along with Akira, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell and Berserk etc. it falls into the global canon of amazing story telling and philosophical and psychological implications worthy of serious analysis, on top of being just a wonderfully enjoyable piece of fiction to experience. This story will go on to be considered must see/read material LONG after its completion.

You genuinely made my eyes teary, as you put into words everything I had in my mind about MiA. At first, several years ago, I hesitated to watch this anime because it seemed somewhat generic and childish, but much later then I just binge watched all the series in one night. And later I had trouble sleeping because of all the thoughts and images flooding my head endlessly extending and explaining the universe I've seen over there. The Abyss captivated me a year ago and never let me go since then, I even have a large printed map of the abyss on my wall!

This is PHENOMENAL! It made me get teary-eyed. I love this show so much. Its world is truly unique in every single way, and even--or espeically--the fact that the main characters are children instead of teens or capable adults is narratively significant. I can't WAIT to afford a poster and frame of this show to hang proudly on my wall. It's so mysterious and horrific and terrifying; each instance of gore is thematically important, which I love since they make it essential without being gratuitous. And, seeing this gave me some inspiration for my own story world! Creating a story around "what's at the bottom?"--such a simple question--is perhaps my favorite thing about it, if I had to choose. Such a simple question and desire from characters and audience drives the entire thing--and you're right, the consistency is a major player in that, because without it the stakes wouldn't be as dangerous. Also, Kevin Penkin?!?! GOD-TEIR. More than that. I've been listening to the Made in Abyss & Tower of God soundtracks almost exclusively for nearly two years now, and they still haven't gotten old. I never thought I'd listen to someone who could top Joe Hisaishi from Studio Ghibli, but....this guy did. And I am LOVING season 2 so far!!

Thank you so much for this. A few months ago I pulled an all nighter, and found the wonders of made in abyss. And that was an experience I will NEVER forget. Starting at 12:00 am, and just having the world building on just episode one got me completely hooked. Nothing but my full attention on the world and it’s characters. 22 minutes each, I explore something new with our brave and naive little cast. And uhhhh (Ozen can step on me.) Anyways having my trust completely broken with such a cutesy atmosphere turning into a blood bath kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Was I tired for staying up all night? Yes. Was I gonna go to sleep? Of course not. I needed to see the whole thing through, and keep the mood. And that was the best decision I’ve made in a while. Last few episodes, and I feel like I’ve had my hand broken by a rock. It was too much in the greatest way possible. And then when our baby Mitty died, I balled. Im pretty sure my entire body shriveled up due to water loss. My grandpa had dementia, and passed away the same year, so that hit harder than going back up the 7th layer. I hadn’t cried from a show/movie in over 4 years. (Assassination classroom hurt me) and that was my selling point of this being in my top 3 animes of all time. I honestly can’t believe how perfect it is I’m like 90% of its aspects. Thank you again for making this, you are doing gods work. (Oh and subscribed.)

Very nice essay. MIA is one stunning piece of work. I find the comparison to One Piece interesting but I don't feel like embarking on that journey as it just seems like A LOT. I try to push MIA as much as I can because it's something that's more concentrated and focused in terms of a series. The first season and movie are us experiencing the known Abyss. The characters know a lot about the monsters and such but experinecing is is something entirely different. It's like hearing and seeing pictures of far off lands and then actually going on that trip. Season 2 is totally unknown to just about everyone in and out of the world. It's been magical so far and can be seen on HIDIVE!

So i thought the show was a little different than what you described so i rewatched the first episode. Actually, the island was discovered 1,900 years before the current time in the show, and people went there to risk their lives in hope of striking it rich. In episode 2, after Lyza dies, they specifically say “12 times foreign cave raiders attacked…” so it doesn’t seem to be just 1 island and nothing else… I have not read the manga so there could be differences

also, when Ozen brings the piece of meat back to life, Ozen mentions how Riko and the piece of meat started moving toward the abyss, as if they had another option, which tells me there could have “potentially” been other professions to explore besides just cave dwelling…… WHICH ADDS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS BEING HER DESTINY TO EXPLORE THE DEPTHS AND REACH THE NETHERWORLD!!! They're clearly trading, watch the second season. I'd say the 1900 applies to Orth and less to what was before because they're talking about striking it rich while the praying skeletons are very clearly not doing that. And Lyza is not explicitly dead, her whistle is sent up but it is an important detail later.

@non ey I would agree but in the show they also said some of the skeletons and other things in the show are estimated to be much older than 1900 years so it’s possible there was much going on way before the time in the show. I’m not disagreeing with you, i would just simply love it if they brought in another abyss in like season 3 or 4 or 5 and they go to war with them. interesting options for the future! true. possibly not dead. i should have said when they had her funeral, regardless of her current state of health.

any first thoughts into season 2? I feel like it went a bit too extreme, and creepy in a bad sense, detracting from the original sense of wonder and adventure that we get on the first season and bondrewd's movie.

Dawn of the deep soul had basically no sense of wonder in it, it was very restrained, although not in a bad way. It created horror through that. Season 2 is a natural progression. As the more lovecraftian side of the abyss starts to show, so does the atmosphere change. The sense of awe is still there through the massive shots of the golden city. The sense of wonder is replaced with a sense of anxiety (which was very present in season 1) as well as oddness. Iruburu is creepy, there really is no other way to describe it. There is a constant sense of something being off, through the narehate, the strange color patterns, kaja’s movement. And while not as hard to watch as the Bondrewd arc, like you said it definitely is creepier and more horrifying, but I feel like that adds to it. All I want to say is, as they go down, the reality of the situation gets more clear, and so does the abyss get more horrifying, as discover more of it’s true nature.

@@nicograms the problem is totally unrelated to those points, in fact I like both the movie and second season due to these elements. As we go down, things become worse, and horrifying. SPOILER WARNING: What got me so apprehensive is all of the borderline pedophile vibes I got with maa having dildo arms, piercing a hole into meynya, and all the rape vibes with Riko etc. The thing with the past of the village only serves to reflect the reality of the abyss and the darkness of humans, and what they're capable of doing to survive. But all the sexual / pedo vibes got me weirded out, made me thing why... Why do this... Broke my immersion entirely.
