The STRANGEST LINEUP in Kansas City Royals HISTORY | Royals @ Mariners (1998)

To start off the 1998 MLB season, Kansas City Royals player Hal Morris was the hottest hitter in baseball, hitting over .600 over the previous two weeks. However, for a 1998 game against the Seattle Mariners, manager Tony Muser decided to bench him against the best pitcher in all of baseball, Randy Johnson. And the reason why and the aftermath from this? Well, let's just say it's bizarre.

As a lifelong Royals fan Muser isn't even among the darkest days as a Royals fan. He once told us "They need to fire me, because I won't quit" when he knew he needed to go.

left out: a week later, mariners played royals again, with randy on the mound. hal was benched in that game too. mariners won 5-1, hal came in after randy was pulled, hit a pinch hit double. found his 98 splits, on base was actually higher vs lefties, but zero power at all (no homers, 4 doubles, and on base was over 20 points higher than his slugging).

This is a non-story. Unless you're Cal Ripken, you're taking a day off once in a while. And as a left-handed batter, opposing Randy Johnson in April is a good day for one of those off days. If this is the post-season, this is a story. In April, not so much.

Let’s just say Darryl Strawberry had a much stronger reaction when Davey Johnson pinch hit for him in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

THAT is the game which really needs a deep dive..it could be the premiere "Dumb Decisions" episode on this channel, mainly focusing on the butcher job by both managers (primarily John McNamara, since Davey Johnson and his Mets won).

Billy Martin did one better by benching Reggie Jackson vs. Paul Splittorf in the deciding game of the 1977 ALCS. He eventually sent Reggie to PH late in the game and he responded with a key hit. I remember listening to a Royals game around '96 vs. Toronto. The Royals had acquired Mitch Williams as their closer and he came in to pinch the 9th. After a few Blue Jays reached base Muser pulled Williams when Carter came up to bat . I understand his reasoning since Williams gave up the big home run to Carter in the '93WS but as a fan I would have loved to hear what would have happened.

It was Hal Morris. Come on. Hal Morris was a good player, but he wasn't the best player on the Royals, not by a long shot. They had Johnny Damon in his prime on that team, and three or four other guys who were as least as good as Morris, who hit .309 with one home run and 40 RBI over 127 games in 1998. He was just on a hot streak when that game was played, and almost ever LH hitter in the game got benched when Randy Johnson was the opposing pitcher. Tony Muser did a lot of questionable things as a manager, which is why he never managed again after the Royals fired him in 2002. But benching a 33 year-old Hal Morris against Randy Johnson wasn't one of them.

I should note that on April 10, 1998, at Boston, in that aforementioned dominant start against the Red Sox, he didn’t pick up the decision in that, either, as the Mariners bullpen caved in, allowing 7 runs without getting an out in the 9th, resulting in a 9-7 Seattle loss.

Morris did have a slash line of .294/.363/.333 against lefties that season, and wasn't that great career-wise (.252/.312/.314) against lefties, so Muser wasn't exactly wrong. Fun fact: Morris never faced Johnson in his career.

I used to be a Blowrioles fan before Washington got the Nationals. I believe Davey Johnson used to make lineup cards with eight right-handed batters against Randy Johnson. Brady Anderson apparently relished the challenge of facing the Big Unit while the other lefties begged off.

found the info. randy faced the o's 3 times in 1997 (he only faced them once in 1996, but that was actually out of the bullpen, and i'm bypassing playoff for this, only focusing on regular season). he did what you said twice, other time, 7 right handed hitters (and yes, brady anderson played in all 3) turned out to be the correct call, though. mariners lost all 3 of his starts vs the o's that year (5 if you include the playoffs).

Morris's career numbers vs lefties were pretty bad. Whoever was in the lineup in his place was a professional hitter, not Homer Simpson.

Teams would frequently rest their left handed batters vs Johnson. Johnny Oates did it all the time.

1998 was the year Johnson moped and whined about his bad back while forcing his way out of Seattle, then suddenly found his groove in Houston to the tune of 10-1 with a 1.28 ERA.

The 1979 Pirates (We Are Fam-i-lee) platooned at left field (Lefty John Milner, Righty Bill Robinson) and catcher (Lefty Ed Ott and Righty Steve Nicosia). One game that year Nicosia started 4-4 against the Phillies, including two hits off Steve Carlton. The Pirates trailed by one in the bottom of the ninth, but loaded the bases. Nicosia was due to face Tug McGraw. Manager Chuck Tanner pulled Nicosia for Milner. Everyone in Pittsburgh was stunned by the move. But Kent Tekulve said Nicosia told him upon being pulled, “I’m a lifetime .230 hitter. What are the odds I go 5-5?” Milner hit a walkoff grand slam and got carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates.

Not a surprising move. Tugger always struggled against LHP, plus Milner played with McGraw from 1972-74 with the Mets so Hammer knew him well.

You start with 50 points, add points for every inning pitched, out recorded and strikeout, and subtract points for allowing hits, runs and walks. So 50 points is the equivalent of starting a game, but never actually throwing a pitch. (Maybe you hurt yourself warming up.)

@big8dog88 So in other words, anything lower than 50 is worse than doing nothing but showing up to start the game. Thanks for the info.
