When you think about the sheer number of clutch hits and consider “the intangibles” such as the “veteran leadership” it’s easy to see how the positives outweigh the negatives when describing Carlos Santana’s tenure in Seattle. It’s also important to realize that the M’s didn’t have a MLB ready in house replacement when Ty France hit the DL. However I think it’s important to point out the main reason why the FO did not pick up his contract for the 2023 season. This current FO is one of the best, if not the single best regime Seattle has ever seen. They have shown us they can identify and produce young prospect talent, they are one the best in the League at using analytics and developing their own. They can spot Pitchers like Flexen, Sadler and Sewald- guys who were almost out of baseball, into valuable cogs in a winning Org. Another thing they do well…..is make business decisions without letting their emotions influence them. The decision to let Santana go is one more example of a calculated business decision When you think about the significance of Santana’s HR in the historic comeback in the WC game it feels sacrilegious to say this but the biggest reason Santana is in PIT? Stranding RISP. Carlos left 16 men on base in just 5 playoff games! Plenty of our hitters were guilty of that in the Playoffs but Santana was the worst by a mile. When you think about the last 2 decades of M’s teams- how many lineups had hitters like this? RISP hitters found DP’s and can of corns! It’s a good decision to have a lineup with one less hitter like this. Despite that- Carlos Santana will ALWAYS be thought of fondly by me and many of the fans in Seattle. He’s actually a good fit for that young PIT clubhouse and hopefully the shift rule can help his ability to drive in Runners this year. Oye como va Carlos? Gracias jefe!
