Michael turned videos into an art form. His videos told stories and his dancing is legendary.

Michael wrote in his 1988 autobiography _Moonwalk_ that he was very upset that his 1979 album _Off The Wall_ had been one the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums of the year, yet it only got one Grammy. He was determined his next album wouldn't be ignored. Billie Jean was the song that catapulted both him and his next album _Thriller_ into the stratosphere, and set the record for 8 Grammy wins in one night that has only been matched once (by Carlos Santana for his album _Supernatural_ ), but has still not been broken.

I remember reading somewhere that the higher ups and CBS records threatened to pull their artists video rights from MTV if they didn't play Billie Jean. I don't know if that's true or not. In my opinion, they would be no MTV if it weren't for Michael. Before he came on the scene, music videos were just bands playing or some weird abstract concept or funny camera angles to get your attention and promote whatever artist or band's album. But I think Michael was the first to bring in big budget and actual filmaking to the music video genre. His video premieres were EVENTS. Even though you knew you'd see it again, you just wanted to be home to watch the first airing of one of his videos. Back in those days, my family still didn't have cable, so we had to watch Video One w/ Richard Blade. And sometimes the videos aired on the day after MTV, so I was often late to the party when the kids talked about Michael's videos at school. But I was home for Motown 25! I think my face hurt from smiling so much! Michael was a pioneer, an inovator, and he stood the music video world on its ear. Thank you, Michael. I miss you.

+HardyGirl66 Yes, it was CBS who did threaten to pull out all of their artists out of MTV if they didn't air Billie Jean. Walter Yetnikoff, the president of Jackson's record label CBS, threatened MTV that he'd go public with their stance on race: I said to MTV, 'I'm pulling everything we have off the air, all our product. I’m not going to give you any more videos. And I'm going to go public and fucking tell them about the fact you don't want to play music by a black guy.' I wish he had seen in himself what everyone saw. He was visually stunning as a teen, Off The Wall, Thriller, and Dangerous. I wonder what Michael would have looked like had he stopped plastic surgery during one these eras. Nonetheless, he was always gorgeous, inside and out.

  • @LunaJo67WDHTMJ

I agree; he was always gorgeous. Like a lot of young people he had insecurities and they were magnified because of how his father reacted and I think because of being in the public eye all the time. It will make you more self conscious, if you are vulnerable to that. And he was. I know his first nose surgery actually was because of breaking it after a fall rehearsing at a young age, but after that I think he lost control a little bit, trying to make himself perfect. While he already was. But I think the fact he had Vitiligo was the main thing that made him look different, not the plastic surgery. A lot of people did not know that Michael also had discoid lupus until after his death. This is another skin related disease that interferes with healing of scars, so that after Michael had the initial surgery on his nose it became necessary for him to have additional surgeries to repair and rebuild his nose.

I remember when he had this woman with twins who he found by his pool and she insisted 1 of her twin boys was his. So he couldn't confront her & decided to write this song. While the beats were in his mind his rolls royce was on fire & motorcyclist told him hey your car's on fire. Omg there was an interview somewhere. He was w/Nelson Hayes driving down Ventura Highway. I remember when MJ came out w/this & on MTV

The story of MJ writing the story of Billie Jean about an actual woman who claimed (falsely) he was the father of one of her kids is true. She was also stalking him and managed to get over the fence of one of his homes, and scared the he'll out of him, so that they had to have extra security. Later in 1996 he modified the story about her, saying "there is a real Billie Jean, but the song is not just about her, it represents a lot of girls 'groupies' who have had relationships with my brothers over the years and claimed they were father's of their sons." You can search it on KZread and see for yourself. Just look up Michael Jackson's VH1 1996 interview about becoming a father. Look for the interview that is about 10 or 11 minutes long, because some of the posts only show a few minutes and don't contain all of the interview.

Michael indeed gave his messages through his music. He was actually a true protest singer: Beat It, Black or White, They don't care about us, Earth Song, Money, Scream; just to name a few. But in 2002 he physically came out to protest the way ( mainly) Black Artists were treated in the music industry. LJ
