The story of a runt II 😢

Bobbin looked set to fly high ...... a story of hope and sadness 😭... Bobbin has always been one of my favourite babies and I had meant to do this a long long while ago but I have only come around to do it just now....

    Another beautiful tribute . I was thinking about how well you make these videos down to every detail and it made think about children's books. I think you could write and publish some amazing good and wholesome children's books, making the stories and lessons from the monkeys you have filmed all these years. It's just a thought and if you ever did I would bet you would be a best seller. Every child loves monkeys and with your unique story telling abilities, and the beautiful images you make of them using the computer it would be a win win 🏆

    Even when they snatched Charlotte (who had been rejected) many of the adult monkeys went CRAZY and it took a coordinated effort with umbrellas as shields to get away with her. Snatching a baby that mom is keeping an eye on means the alarm bells go off instantly and you’ll likely get swarmed by adult monkeys. Very risky proposition especially in a place that seems to be full of humans like this island is.

    In countries where these primates are endemic, people know that they can't be kept as pets. They may fetch an exorbitant price in Western countries, but they are worthless where they are from. You can get a baby long-tailed for 5-10 dollars in the pet market in Indonesia for example but they usually don't sell well for the same aforementioned reason. I think the notion that these primates are highly priced by poachers is a myth intentionally propagated by the VOs in Cambodia - just think about how it, if they are so highly-priced and sell well, why are we seeing scores of monkeys being abandoned in the forest of Angkor ?

  • @gsmith6026

    @gsmith6026

    @@thestorysofarDon’t the “pet” owners only want to keep them while they are small babies and then they dump them at Angkor Wat? I just don’t think the people of Hong Kong are like those in Cambodia and Indonesia. I have never seen a “pet” monkey channel in Hong Kong. I have great respect for a country whose residents obey the law. In the USA, they are trying to pass a law that it be illegal for any primate to be kept as a pet. Primates don’t make good pets.

    @@gsmith6026 This is a common practice in many South East Asian countries for years before KZread. They dumb them everywhere. For instance, you will see them in the capital, and almost anywhere where there are humans. The German NGO, Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) just outside Angkor ceases to rescue and house any more abandoned LTMs and PTMs as its facilities for mammals are filled to the brim by them. The history of the LTMs and PTMs in the forest of Angkor is short - they are mostly descendants of abandoned pets from the late 80s. During the Khmer Rouge years, the entire forest was wiped clean of any edible wildlife during and shortly after the massive man-made famine there.

    It seems more likely that instead of a lack of milk, he passed from an accident. Either car related or a fall. He was still pretty wobbly at 5 months and even though Martha never let him out of his sight, accidents still happen. Poor Button must’ve been confused as to what happened to his lil bro.

    It’s not unheard of that the weaning phase starts around 3 months sometimes. He still would’ve gotten regular milk up until his death. I think Martha was just overprotective and also wanted to push him more to foraging since he was behind.

    Not strictly true. AM did an analysis on his channel some years ago based on a research paper, that was pier reviewed; it documented that 20 % of babies die in the first 6 months from accidents, malnutrition or an infection. This rises to 32% after 6 months, as the babies get more independent from their mothers. The title of his video on this is q & a retained placenta and infant mortality. Road kill and fatal falls are also high on the list.

    I’m kind of with Bobbin on this. Martha would crawl through a mile of broken glass for a 1/4 mango rather than forage. He’s been forced to sit in her lap for 3 months with constant access to the milk-bar and suddenly she wants him to just start eating only when she needs to forage? She won’t let him a foot away from her, where is he supposed to eat?

    Macaques, specifically infants, are prone to their sugar dropping drastically. It’s more common with those under a year old that are introduced to processed foods. Like bread. They can seem fine one minute and the next lethargic and soon after pass away unless they have a means of taking in some form of sugar. Some of them are just unable to process it properly. Just like us, orange juice or a peppermint could be enough to balance their sugar levels out. However, without a necropsy, everything is theory and there is no way to know for sure unless there is evidence of some form of trauma.
