@@elephantelephant1236 They should put the F1 Masters on TV looked it up and it seems way more interesting than modern F1. Tbh though i'd be happy with just more Rallycross or BTCC on TV or easy to watch. F1 has become the most boring motor sport ever now and it's sad.

I sat on the couch in Germany in 1971, and watched Fittipaldi smash the competition. I clearly remember the lines of the 72, and its sweeping wing.

Ben Collins' height is 189cm, Hammond's is 168. This stig is only jusy taller than Hammond so I'm assuming this is not the Ben Collins stig.

When this episode aired in 2007, I had only a passing interest in Formula 1. This episode introduced me to the Lotus 72. That gorgeous form, the glorious sound of that Cosworth 3.0L V8. One of the most successful Lotus F1 cars. It's easily one of my top 5 favorite F1 cars.

@@m1co294 Collins drove the drive tribe M5 briefly and was able to tell that the suspension was off by 5-10mm. The man is a proper driver.
At eleven, I saw this very same car racing in 1972 at a non championship race in the amazing original 7 km long Interlagos circuit. Adding to my fortune, I was at the now defunct Sargento hairpin, which was heavily banked, and from the molehill in its hub, the cars could be seen almost from above, and it was spectacular. By then, I had been folowing the sport for four years, having lived throuth the trauma of losing my idol Jimmy Clark, and then Jochen Rindt. Seein Fittipaldi in real life driving this gorgeous racing car, and knowing he was fighting for the championship then was nothing short of magical.

Man, that's awesome. One of the best looking race cars of all time, Lotus sure knew how to build some beauties.
The M3 is the only one from the three i still buy, as a used car, today. BMW really knows how making timeless designs, or... at least it knew it...

I could watch the back end of that M3 rotate for hours. That tiny bit of oversteer is just heavenly

To be fair to James, his point about tire durability is important as it meant the car could stay out for longer while others may end up pitting and losing valuable time on the leader.

Those laptimes show how aerodynamics matter. Although less powerful, the Lotus 72 was 23 seconds faster than the fastest car of the three. Mindblowing!

+4ven8 you dont drive, do you? 90% of all BMW drivers are complete assholes on the road, specially on the highway. Audi drivers too, but no as much as BMW.

These three are hands-down the funniest three people ever to be on television in ANY nation.. I would give up every single show I love for the rest of my life to have Top Gear come back...

I guarantee you that that's not off the cuff. All these things are completely scripted. Do you really think the show would be any good if they just made it all off. It's all planned out.
As much fun as it was to see The Stig tear it up in Emmo's Lotus, all I can say is: Hellooooooo, Lady Stig!

Actually it all makes sense. It's to show that no matter how sporty and powerful these saloons are, they are still no race cars. And it also shows how much technology for the race cars of the 70s was needed in comparison to the road cars of today.

Ben Dover The original GT40 that didn't even make the LeMans in 1964 was indeed all British but the iconic 1966 one that actually won is mainly the work of Carroll Shelby who described the original one as bad.
