The Stanley No 78 Rabbet Plane Is...Awesome.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this week's video I introduce the Stanley No. 78 Rabbet Plane. I give you a quick demo of what it is and how it works.
This plane is awesome and is definitely one of my favorites. Over the next few weeks we will be making another picture frame and this rabbet plane will be used during the project.
It's going to be a great skill builder and a lot of fun!

Actually, the nicker is to be used when cross grain cutting and is unneeded for long grain rabbets. One of the really tricky parts of using the plane is in setting the blade when there is no blade adjusting lever and the alignment of the blade with the side of the plane. It would have also been nice if you had explained the use of the front blade bed. Other than that it was a good video on that plane type and you got a great tool for a real bargain.
See Paul Sellers video on 78. If you look at the blade you will see it is relieved on the side edge, this is for a reason. The side of the blade cuts the wall. The blade protrudes a fraction so it cuts. No spur required when running with the grain only on cross cut. Hope this helps.
I just inherited one for my grandpa and truly had no idea what it was at first... but I'm learning. Good video thank you thank you. 👍👍👍
Thanks! I'm restoring my first No. 78. Appreciate the video. What a GREAT DEAL you got for $6! (BTW...the "knicker is actually called the "spur".)
That is a great tool and you got it for a great price (all in) , I enjoyed this video. Good to see good ol' hand tools doing their nice job.
The spur (nicker) is used for cross cut rebates.
It’s amazing how few videos there are regarding this plane. I had the chance to use one of these in college (I’m studying part-time in the evenings), and I was surprised at how difficult they are to set up. Then again, it’s a college and the tools are used by many other students too, so they were probably bent and very worn. Anyway, this is a good video, but I have a request if I may; a video regarding setup, please. Thanks 🙏
I have one that was my dads, but is missing the fence and the depth adjustment. I've never used it. Cool to see how it was meant to be used! Thanks for the demo!
Pura vida mi amigo great video and great hand tool
Love God, love each other, love work! Thank you!
Waiting for more. How are you doing now. You should be on the sweet side of the learning curve.
Picked up 3 of these at an 'Antique Mall' in Alabama in a $5 'box of old junk tools'. Little bit of surface rust (removed) but decent blades that sharpened beautifully. Love the little roadside places and flea markets. Find an area where homes are going up and you can get a killer deal on tile saws and such since they figure tools into the contracts.
I remember a long time ago in my Mams mail order catalogue you could get a "combination" plane. Think it could do moldings and all sorts, be nice to see summat like that.
It’s usually my first choice for a rebate (rabbet) over either of my electric routers. Much easier than setting up my router table and much more organic.
Thanks for the video! It’s been A year since you posted, how has this been for you? I’m excited to get mine.
Got me a brand new 78 but its lacking the fence and depth stop. I am not sure if i can use it to make rabbets properly..i do intend to use it to shape my tenons though.
Great video. Future reference, don’t start the video by admitting you don’t have much experience with the tool 😉 And...the nicker is only used for cross grain cuts
That's a great little plane I started making reproduction depth stops because so many are missing. If you know any one that needs one let me know

Yep, most of the time they are missing. You have a great channel by the way! Really cool stuff. I don't do machining but I'd like to some day.

This summer a friend gave me a Champion Forge & Blower post drill press that I'll be restoring. I'll look you up when it's done or if I run into something during the restore. :-)

Thanks. Yeah, I know. I don't know what I was thinking when I did the video. I might go back and fix it. I was pretty new to this tool when I did the video and I knew better but was in a severe sleep deprived fog (newborn plus three other kids will do that to ya! Lol.) Appreciate the comment!!!
In your research check out Paul Sellers. He goes into detail on this plane.
This made me realize some parts are missing on my 78 :(

I'm guessing you're missing the fence?

I know what you mean. I had to get two of them to get all the parts for one complete plane.
The nicker is to the Silver Surfer what the plane blade is to Galactus.
Rebates where I come from
Do you not mean a; Stanley 78 Duplex "Rebate" Plane!
Stanley tools are great in general
You keep moving your plane away from the cut a 1/16th of an inch from every cut. Definately an inaccurate rabbet

Yep. The blade has to be a miniscule amount proud on the cut side to keep your cut straight. You are correct.
does your fence moves a little bit even if you tight it well?
