How to Sharpen a Spur on a Stanley Dado Plane

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to sharpen a spur on a rabbet plane or dato plane is a common question for me. Sharpening spurs can be really simple. but it is easy to overthink and make it more complicated then it needs to be. weather in hardwood or softwood you need a spur or nicker to cut cross grain. otherwise, you will just make a mess so here is a quick video on how to sharpen a spur or nicker.

    If you don't have vice-grips (how have you survived?) you can screw the nicker to a piece of wood.

    I watch all your videos and find them very helpful. I am restoring a Stanley 39 dado plane (your video was great!)... I have acquired knickers for it, but am missing the screws. Do you know or can you determine the size and thread for those spur screws? Again, thanks for your great videos!

  • @WoodByWright

    @WoodByWright

    3 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately they changed the screw throughout the run of the plane. So I would have to take it to the hardware store and try the screws one by one until I found the one that fits. Usually you get one that is longer and then file it back until it's flush.

    Sure. I'll have to go back and take a look at it but I did a couple videos on how to sharpen Stanley 45 irons and Stanley 55 irons. Generally what you do is find a dowel that fits the shape you want then wrap sandpaper around it and sharpen with that.

  • @WoodByWright

    @WoodByWright

    I do not know what the thread size is. If I had to guess I'd say a number six but I'd have to check. As to replacement spurs. A lot of people just make them out of hacksaw blades. But you can usually find them from most online antique sellers. I have a list of them on handToolfinder.com you can also ask on the parts division group on Facebook.

    Spurs and Nickers -- sounds like an old cowboy movie .. perhaps a bit of porn? Gotta watch those names. Especially your nickers. Is there enough metal in the remainder of that knicker that was too short to peen out a bit more length? I'd probably try it. Then mess it all up ...Grrrr....
