The Spurs' Drafting Zach Edey! Genius Move Or Disaster?
Is Zach Edey to the Spurs a genius draft move or a giant mistake? The stakes are high as the San Antonio Spurs contemplate drafting the towering 7'4" Zach Edey, a force in college basketball with an impressive average of 25 points and 12 rebounds per game. Discover how Edey's unique physical attributes could reshape the Spurs' strategy and potentially transform them into a formidable powerhouse in the NBA.
This video reveals the pros and cons of drafting a player like Edey, whose height and skill set have sparked debates about his potential impact in the modern NBA. Will his dominance in the paint translate to success against the NBA's more versatile and agile players, or will it expose limitations in his game that could make him a liability on the court?
Don't miss out on our detailed analysis, comparing Edey to other NBA giants past and present, and exploring whether his style of play can adapt to the evolving demands of the league. Why you should be excited about this potential pick: Edey's presence could mean a new era for the Spurs, pairing him with existing talents to create a "twin tower" effect that could intimidate any offense.
What team wouldn't want a player who never gives less than 100%? Edey's work ethic and mindset might just be the secret weapon the Spurs need. Let's discuss his potential impact and whether the Spurs should make the bold move to trade up for him.

Zach Edey is still clay waiting to be molded. He’s a willing student that has a crazy abnormal body, work ethic supposedly, can shoot free throws, can pass, and has stamina to stay on the court for long stretches! Him and Wemby would be scary as hell together!! We would literally foul everyone out…..

I would like to see the Spurs draft him to play with Wemby two 7'4 centers , him and Wemby will create a dominant interior defense in the league, also go after a veteran point guard who been in the playoffs like Trae Young. I also believe the Spurs will be better next year and make a playoff run.

The problem with the rationale of Edey’s fit on the Spurs is that Wemby is better at the 5 than the 4. They tried playing him at the 4 with Zach Collins, and Wemby didn’t get unlocked until he moved to the 5. They need a stretch 4 to go along with Wemby a Bam Adebayo or Draymond type player (but taller) would be ideal

Shaq was 1at ballot HoF and you want to point to injury issues....OK. Edey is in phenomenal shape. He holds no more excess weight proportionally than any other player. He can also step out and hit jumpers, it simply was not asked of him in college. Edey is a stud at any level.

Great Idea! As a Spurs fan in San Antonio having a 7'4" big on the floor at all times would be a delight. When Wemby was getting bullied by an Embiid, Jokic, or Sengun he had no help this season Zach Collins and Sandro Mamukelashvilli were too small to go up against those Centers while Wemby was off the floor. Edey would fill that gap and the other teams bigs would still have to be cautious going into the paint with Wemby on the bench, which is when teams would go on runs and take the lead because there was no rim protection. Right now the Spurs only have 1 center and its Wemby but it could be 2 with Edey.

Over the past 45 years, only three players over 7'1" tall have had NBA careers that lasted more than 10 years: Rick Smits, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mark Eaton. Their careers are often cut short due to leg, foot and back injuries. As for Edey, I too hope he gets a shot with a young team that can bring him along slowly.

Tbh if the Lakers bring back Phil Handy even though he was released from the staff with Ham, I think the Lakers are a perfect fit for Edey. LeBron and AD are there, allows Edey to play the 5, but also the Lakers have 3-4 offensive options in the starting lineup so they can primarily focus on Edey's defense as well as AD being able to roam and on the helpside, and Edey's post ability means that they will have to send doubles when he gets the ball in the post, which opens things up for AD, LeBron, Reaves and DLO if they retain him. So the Lakers are probably the best fitting 'veteran' team for Edey and if Phil Handy comes back, him developing Edey would be fantastic.

Been saying this for a while. Pick 4: Zach Edey. Pick 8: Dalton Knecht. Wemby is the player that will be able to protect Edey on defense. Edey would be an automatic bucket against 75% o the the league's bigs. Garza could never thrive because he too small to play the 5 and too slow to play the 4. Edey will be the biggest player for most of the games.( Excluding Wemby!)

Men that size typically age faster and are, as you say, more susceptible to lower-body injury. When they do get injured, the tend to recover more slowly than others. I don't envy either Edey or Wembanyama; I don't see either playing more than about 9 or 10 years and after that, they'll still be stuck with those ginormous bodies. I hope and pray they prove me wrong.

That backcourt gives them DEFENSE, PASSING, BALL HANDLING and OUTSIDE shooting to best accentuate Wemby's game. They should try to move up for Risacher by offering Collins and #4. Why does he have to get drafted by a young rebuilding team? Dallas wasn't rebuilding when they drafted Lively and he performed very well.

Wembanyama needs another big alongside him on the court at all times. At least for his first years in the L, while he bulks up. I do not know for sure whether Edey is the perfect pair for him, but he could be. I hope the Spurs do not feel like drafting him or Clingan.

No matter how good (even Wemby) , put him on the Warriors and he will be benched. Steve Kerr does not trust rookies no matter how good. This is a fact, look at the dissaster last year. They just realized their mistake late in the season and started winning but came short.

I share your view. I think that his mindset makes him a potentially great contributing player to the success of any team. With the Spurs, his work ethics would help him learn immensely from a great coaching staff and an already super good Wemby. I would personally love to see these two grow together. The combinations of plays seem to be endless with him as a constant threat in the paint both defensively and in offensively. What room he would give Wemby to express his talent on the court. As you said... Whatever happens, I really hope that he gets a real shot in the NBA.

San Antonio Spurs, why not draft Zach Edey? He thoroughly outplayed Clingan when their teams played each other and from what I heard and read way outshone him in every way at the combine. (bigger, longer, faster, higher vertical, shot better from all over the court …) Further, Zach is simply a significantly better basketball player than Clingan. After all, it was Zach, not Clingan that was named National Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024! Anyone thinking of picking Clingan would be well served to take Edey instead. Talking about twin towers! P. S. Zach is not slow of foot as some claim. He was faster than many of the players at the combine who people are talking about drafting before him. People’s negative impression of him has a lot more to do with how his collegiate team used him than how good he is on the basketball court. Spurs, please draft him at either 4 or 8. You will not regret it!

Zack Edey is like a Yao ming. Yes the Spurs need a big off the bench when Wembanyama is taking a rest. Wembanyama can play power forward but he looks suited for center. Edey is probably better than Bassey in being bigger. Collins and Wembanyama on the court this year did not result in wins, as Collins is also a 3pt shooting big. Got posterised often. Edey has size over collins and Sochan. Edey has a shot that is like a flat skyhook. If Edey has defensive capability, he may be an upgrade over current roster but may trade off the speed of the team. Spurs need a rebounder.

I agree. Get another big man & follow the timberwolves blueprint. Put Wemby at the 4 so he doesn’t have to take the pounding from other big centers. Get a pg in free agency.

  • @cortezfernandez7475
    @cortezfernandez7475Ай бұрын

Spurs are much better off using a first Rd pick and 2 2nd picks plus a young player or 2 for Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso. It would give them a solid, BIG, defensive backcourt with good 3pt shooting and versatility. They should also grab Isiah Hartinstien and Bol Bol in free agency. Again, giving them depth and versatility with defense to help Wemby take the Spurs to being among the NBA s elite. Add more SHOOTERS(Zaccarie Risache) through the draft and free agency and the Spurs will contend for a playoff sport earlier than expected.

As a Spurs fan I hope we select Topic and Salaun
