Another comment asked this question and someone provided the answer, so I'll paraphrase here. When the wheel speeds up, it gets closer and closer to the maximum speed your brain can process the information from your eyes, eventually surpassing it and creating the appearance of reversal. It's basically the same thing that happens if you exceed a screen's refresh rate. If a screen has a 60Hz refresh rate, that means it can process up to 60 frames per second, and anything above that will cause distortion such as screen tearing (which is what VSYNC is for, capping graphical FPS at 60Hz or whatever matches the same rate as your screen). Our eyes essentially have a maximum FPS and anything faster will have a slight delay, causing them to be processed in reverse. Imagine one of those old fashioned flipbook animations. Flipping front to back makes the animation move forward, but flipping the pages backwards makes it play in reverse. That's the effect caused when your brain lags behind. The accelerating wheel appears to slow down then momentarily freeze as the FPS matches the same speed as our brain, then begins "playing" in reverse. You can often see this same effect with old reel film animations. The film reel slows down and appears to play in reverse for a moment! ;)

Rolling Shudder. Explained by SmarterEveryDay and why cameras see the way they do. As for your eyes, I'm not certain, but you can pretend that you see continuous motion in a certain frame rate. Eyes see constantly, but your brain can only process the data so fast. Anyway, wheels spinning forward and backward as they actually get faster is just a product of this phenomenon. If a sensor takes a full image at a time rather than scanning, then you get positional change rather than warping. kzread.info/dash/bejne/loKK1q-mfM_Un6g.html

This effect is most apparent with tracked vehicles, like military vehicles or construction equipment. A track is basically an elongated, flexible wheel, because just like a wheel, it rolls in order to carry the vehicle it’s attached to forward. And when you look at a vehicle like that in motion, you’ll notice that the upper tracks seem to fly by, while the bottom tracks are literally motionless whilst in contact with the ground

I have gotten several of my friends with a similar thing that happens with tracked vehicles. Was a tank mechanic in the Marine Corps so I had to think about that. Helped me understand some of the wear and tear of the tracks and the track linkages. The track on the ground is not moving, and the track on top is doubling the tank speed. So the track on a tank moving 30mph goes from 0mph on the ground jumps up to do 60mph only to be dropped back to 0mph.

@Sassy The Sasquatch It is not at all like the rolling shutter, it is much more like the global shutter. Also it happens rarely in the sunlight, but happens more often when the light comes from the 50/60 Hz lamps.

Add to this that the static frictional force is higher than the kinetic frictional force for the same object. This is why you need the abs in the car, to make the very bottom of the tyre remains stationary (when you lock the tyre the bottom of the it starts to slide and the frictional force become kinetic) to make the car stop faster (also there is the maneuver issue)

But what about when the tyre spins so fast that the image of the hub cap it appears to be stationary or sometimes even slowly rotating in the opposite direction?

That's called the wagon wheel effect. one thing that's interesting is that it only happens when electronic displays are involved. in the case of the wagon wheel effect on your computer screen, this would be because the amount it rotates in one frame is enough to closely match one of its rotational symmetries. if every frame it makes a full rotation around to the starting position, then you will only ever see it in the starting position. if it rotates a little bit more than a full rotation, then it would appear to be rotating forwards slowly, and a little bit less would look like rotating backwards slowly. a perfect halfway rotation every frame would just look like it's flashing back and forth, and a little bit off of half would look like the same flashing but also rotating.

@@PokeNebula What you're talking about is related to the framerate a camera captures and the speed at which the image changes. That's how you make the "water flowing backwards" camera trick. But I've seen fans IRL spin so fast that for a second it seems like it's spinning in reverse then slowing down and then slowly switching direction. I think it could also be due to wagon wheel effect due to artificial lighting (tubelight, LED bulbs) which might flicker at a certain frequency and reflect off the blades of the fan.

@@AniketBhatP You are correct. However, I have also personally seen this effect in real time with my own eyes on roads with the sun as the only light source. So unless it also has to do with light bounce and refraction from the road surface interfering with the other photons bouncing off the wheels back to mine eyes... Or simply the inference my brain makes of this mingling of properties as it attempts to translate the experience is up for debate.

This is important for helicopters, the forward moving side of the rotor generates more lift than the opposite. So much so that the angle of attack for each blade has to vary as it travels around each cycle
