    The Geek Actually, what I ended up finding out is that it makes more sense to think of your father as your (-1)th cousin once removed. It stays consistent with the system in a way that isn't at all obvious, whereas 0th cousin once removed doesn't quite accomplish that.

    4 жыл бұрын

    Alex Tayla I don't think that last idea made any sense at all. I think the only solution that is capable of preserving the consistency and simplicity of this systematic scheme is to simply not consider yourself a cousin of any kind relative to yourself. There is no reason to do otherwise. It makes sense to talk about everyone else who is not you as having a level of cousinality relative to you, but it makes no sense to talk about your level of cousinality relative to yourself, because, well, for obvious reasons.

    We can consider uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces (one's parents' siblings and one's siblings' children respectively) collectively as their "siblings once removed", one's granduncles, grandaunts, grandnephews and grandnieces (one's grandparents' siblings and one's siblings' grandchildren) as their "siblings twice removed", etc. I prefer to think of it that way.

    I have cousins who are double first cousins due to my dads brother and mothers sister having children. Not sure how rare that is but I haven't met anyone else who has this. Genetically they are as related to be as a half sibling would be 25%. Also the removed thing is something i have knowing about but mostly everyone just calls the children of their cousin or their parents cousin their 2nd cousin. Probably cause its simpler and easier to say.

    4 жыл бұрын

    AtomicBreakdown Yes, technically, in a way, at least if you were to assume that that makes sense. However, I would argue it doesn't quite make sense anyway. You see, your siblings, a.k.a your zeroth cousins, have zero removal from you, and share 50% of their genealogical DNA with you. You share 100% of your own genealogical DNA. As Michael argued, you could be considered your own 0th cousin as well, but then this means your level of removal would have to change in order for the genetic mathematics the system is based on to be consistent. So, would you be "negatively once removed" from yourself? Would that make any sense? It is just unclear to me how that could work out.

  • @angelmendez-rivera351

    @angelmendez-rivera351

    After thinking about it longer, I realized you would end up having to be your own (-1)st cousin in order for this all to work. Actually, to be more accurate, you are your (-1/2)th cousin. Yeah, get a load of that. But I guess that's just how the maths work out.

    Part of my family was adopted by a cousin (car accident leaving 4 kids with no mother or father), so the whole thing has been taken to another level. I was told that my cousins are about my age and my aunts and uncles are about 5 or more years older than me. This helps a lot as that part of the family is LDS and has grown signficantly. The Catholic side of my family has one or two kids (Maybe, if any at all) and are very easy to keep track of. For one reason or another, I tend to hang out and relate more with my aunts and uncles than I do with my cousins.

    here is why a timeline in which time travel is invented, can never persist: when one does indeed travel through time, one changes the future ever so slightly, doing thos once or twice will likely not make any significant changes, but as those changes become more neumerous, the timeline in which time travel is invented stops and can only continue once one such change causes time travel to not be invented, at which point the timeline becomes stable and mostly cohesive once again. some philosophers toyed with the idea that strange phenomena, out of place technologies in archeological finds, doppelgängers and other similar phenomena, are remnants of such self ending time travel experiments.

    If small changes that time travelers make can mess things up so badly, so can our changes, but we are usually not being extremely careful to avoid accidentally stepping on the wrong ant and preventing time travel’s invention. If time travel is possible, then there is a possibility that it is accidentally discovered in exactly two days, three hours, fourteen minutes and forty-two seconds, and every single action we execute is either contributing or hurting our chances.

    you know that in most of the south it's illegal to marry your first cousin right, but not in Europe. thats right, in europe it's completely legal, infact in 2005 a study was done on 1st cousin marriages in the UK and found that 55% of Muslims were married to their first cousins and despite only being 3% of the population they made up 33% of all people with birth defects Let That Sink In.

    glad Michael made a video on this, it's a really interesting topic. I'd like to get to know all of my cousins and make a huge family tree - I bet our family would feel a lot more complete.

    tbh, if they are younger, once removed makes sense but if they are older, once added makes sense. Generation-wise
