THE SPIDER WITHIN: A SPIDER-VERSE STORY | Official Short Film (Full)
Ойын-сауық
We are proud to officially debut #TheSpiderWithin: A Spider-Verse Story, in partnership with the #KevinLoveFund and the education initiative, #TheHeroWithin. Because everyone is going through something, even superheroes like Miles.
Sony Pictures Animation has teamed up with the Kevin Love Fund to digitally release the animated short film, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, that will be incorporated into the Kevin Love Fund’s new mental health focused lesson plan, “The Hero Within.” The lesson plan invites students to tell their own story through the lens of mental health awareness via an interactive curriculum including a creative storyboard activity. Visit kevinlovefund.org for additional information.

In the genre-bending thriller The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story was developed and produced in the inaugural year of Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ (SPI) Leading and Empowering New Storytellers (LENS) program, a 9-month leadership training program that provides candidates from underrepresented groups with an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in animation. The final deliverable of the program is an all-original short film, set in the existing world of a feature produced by SPA and SPI.
The LENS program is backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment’s global, multi-pronged racial equity and inclusion strategy, Sony Pictures Action. The program’s goal is to provide creatives who have traditionally lacked access to leadership roles with a first-hand opportunity to deepen their understanding of every element of the animated filmmaking process including production design, animation, visual effects, lighting, sound, and various post-production processes. Through the program, participants strengthen their ability to effectively articulate their film’s creative vision and collaborate across a variety of disciplines.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is directed by Jarelle Dampier and written by Khailia Amazan, and produced by LENS program creators Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg. Rounding out the inaugural LENS team are Clara Chan who served as VFX supervisor and Joe Darko who served as animation supervisor.

I experienced that sh1t twice, but before that, I was actually aware of that issue so I didn't open my eyes, it was scary as hell, trying to move my body but I felt I was tied to my bed, I felt a pressure in my chest that gave me the feeling of not breathing properly, and all I could hear was some kind of distorted noise, I wonder what I could've seen if I had open my eyes💀 If it happens to you, don't be afraid, just deep breath and close your eyes. It'll fade away sooner, It helped me a lot🫡 In fact, I'm hoping it happens to me again. The next time, I'll open my eyes 😂

This is the single best portrayal of anxiety I have ever seen in media. It starts off small, you spend an hour just spacing out, staring at a spot on the floor, you crawl into bed, end up a crying mess while not knowing why, then finally talking to someone. Fantastic job.
Im glad to see such a good family being pushed in mainstream, seems like alot of superhero tropes is dead parents or just terrible parents. But miles trusting his dad is just so insanely wholesome

The relationship with miles and his dad has always made me cry in each movie, the way that they both seem to seclude themselves and their emotions unless one or the other really needs them to listen or talk to them. in one of my own stories this is a major theme. Like its a team of magical girls and not a true deconstruction as their being normal heroes and the like but under the surface theres all these demons they are fighting andtheleader most of all but shes trying to be the rock for her team while she herself spirals deeper and deeper into a bad place
I love how they conveyed the idea of him having a panic attack without being completely straightforward. All his thoughts building up and him recalling the events of the day (which is normally a trigger), feeling like he can' t move, the sleep paralysis creature pushing down on his chest (like when your chest tightens and you can't breath), the swift swaying motions? The colours? The music?. This is amazing.
With the trope of superheros always having bad or dead parents, it's nice to see Miles' father actually be there to support him.

One thing I love about Miles in comics is ever since he got put in the 616 universe and got both his parents back, writers have been more willing to get vulnerable with the character. And he always has a support system to go to in his parents and Peter (especially once his parents learned about him being Spider-Man). It's great to read when he starts feeling overwhelmed with everything and can call his parents for support or is willing to ask other heroes to pick up the slack so he can take a breather.

This is hands-down the best representation of anxiety I’ve seen in a while: The heavy breathing, the intrusive thoughts, the voices, the constant replays of all your perceived failures, the spidey-sense false alarm, the sleep paralysis and the feeling of the world turning an alarming RED around you… Sums up what anxiety and a loud mind can feel like to live with, especially on a bad day. Kudos to the team!
Its crazy to sit here and watch this and think "That was me." That was me when i was that age feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders with stress, "friends", future. Feeling like I wanted and needed to talk to somebody but not wanting to talk to somebody at the same time because "Why bother? Nobody cared, so why should I speak to anyone about it? They wont understand and they wont care to even try to understand, so why bother?" Then dealing with that stress myself only to be riddled with grudges and anger and fear. Waking up in the middle of the night every night seeing shadows move and feeling a sense of dread that if I moved an inch or even turned around in my bed and looked behind me something would be there. And that thing that was there was towering over me and if I even just looked at it, even for a second. It would kill me right then and there and there was nothing I could do to stop it... It took years of constant effort to get through it and to recognize what it was I was doing to myself. I consider myself very lucky to be able to do that because most people cant control it or change their thoughts enough to be able to have some kind of normal life. But I can tell it'll be a life long battle for me, because every once in a while i fall back into it and have to recognize what I'm doing to myself and pull myself back out of it. This short resonates with me more than I was expecting today..
bro the bed scene perfectly represents the first time someone experiences sleep paralysis.. anxiety + depression is such an evilish combo

@@Minetendo_Fan Jeff is really not dumb at all, but when it comes to his son's life he's going to be both at least somewhat suspicious and protective but also very cautious about being judgemental at all of Miles until he has at least some proof. He's a great dad, and a really wonderful, heartwarming outlier to the way that African American fathers are all too frequently shown in the media. He's almost certainly got some not too inaccurate suspicions, but unless Miles brings it up he's not going to say a damn thing about those suspicions about what has suddenly taken over all of his son's attention . One of the reasons Miles is my favorite superhero is because he's portrayed as such a normal person rather than just a super strong superhero with no emotions (other than grief cause name a superhero that doesn't lose someone lol). You never see a representation of anxiety in a superhero that's as real as this, a long with his feeling of not fitting in in the movies, and his simple wish to not have to meet everyone's expectations.

I know everyone is saying "That is just Spider-Man", but really I kinda feel "That is just Marvel". Marvel has always been written from the standpoint of "Person first, Hero second", trying to show that all of their heroes have actual lives, things that they are responsible for outside of their "Hero Job" and that usually being a hero hurts their "real life".
ugh i love the reactions between miles and his dad. its just so nice to see a parent who seems genuinely concerned and invested in their kids life. sometimes i wish my dad had given me that when i was young,...
this resonated so much with me because i think i just had my first panic attack. i decided to watch youtube to distract myself, and i jumped for joy when i saw this video!! from the very beginning of the video i was thinking, "hey, this is kind of what happened to me.." because ive got 4 projects that im stressing about and presentations i might miss.. i was sitting in the bathroom and crying, came downstairs and hugged my dad and started bawling again. i didnt expect id be seeing my favorite superhero experiencing anxiety and sleep paralysis and having his parents to support him just like mine made me feel so comforted. this came at just the right time and ive never felt more understood. much love to all those who struggle with anxiety!!

I love that how the bad person in the movie has a similar style to his sleep paralysis demon thing. They both have dark figures & glowing eyes, just a bit of foreshadowing.
I absolutely love the representation of the something which is seen as an ally, giving him his powers being the issue, like its the start of his problems, also being inescapable as they're small and agile , something people fear especially with the idea that you eat a certain amount every year, and that it's starts as a dark reflection you can't hurt, it's perfect, and the callback to when tobey was stressed and dealing with negative issue leading his powers to stop working, genuinely shows the care this series is given, legit 100/10

I like how Marvel always ties their hero’s in with real world emotions, responsibilities and how the world actually works. This is what makes DC worse, they lack all of this. He puts his life on the line every single day while trying to balance his every day life and keep his family safe by emotionally pushing them away and keeping secrets, then he finally gets to meet all the people he thought he could rely on and trust again and finds out they chose not to visit him for years. This felt like a mix of Sleep Paralysis and Panic Attack. Sleep Paralysis is where you see a monster in your "dream" and you know you can't do anything at all, having absolutely no strength, and having like a whole planet smashed onto your chest. Its a really good short film that sends the message about how sometimes its fine to ask for help, and sometimes we have to do better to offer help to those who might need it
@Rebecca_George

Sleep paralysis is when your body is still in a sleep state while your mind is awake. The reason you can’t move is because your body restricts motor function while you’re sleeping to stop you from moving around as you dream. The “demon” comes from the chemicals in your brain that would normally let you dream being used while you’re awake, causing a hallucination. The often frightful nature is just a side effect of the fear and unease that comes from not being able to move.

Him facing as Miles, and the other facing as Spider-Man. Maybe that explains how he’s slowly able to move freely during the “sleep paralysis”
