THE SPIDER WITHIN: A SPIDER-VERSE STORY | Official Short Film (Full) | Sony Animation

Фильм және анимация

We are proud to officially debut The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, in partnership with the Kevin Love Fund. Because everyone is going through something, even superheroes like Miles Morales.
Sony Pictures Animation has teamed up with the Kevin Love Fund to digitally release the animated short film, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, that will be incorporated into the Kevin Love Fund’s new mental health focused lesson plan, “The Hero Within.” The lesson plan invites students to tell their own story through the lens of mental health awareness via an interactive curriculum including a creative storyboard activity. Visit kevinlovefund.org for additional information.
To access the free lesson plan that accompanies “The Spider Within” film, visit kevinlovefund.org/spider-man-...
In the genre-bending thriller The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story was developed and produced in the inaugural year of Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ (SPI) Leading and Empowering New Storytellers (LENS) program, a 9-month leadership training program that provides candidates from underrepresented groups with an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in animation. The final deliverable of the program is an all-original short film, set in the existing world of a feature produced by SPA and SPI.
The LENS program is backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment’s global, multi-pronged racial equity and inclusion strategy, Sony Pictures Action. The program’s goal is to provide creatives who have traditionally lacked access to leadership roles with a first-hand opportunity to deepen their understanding of every element of the animated filmmaking process including production design, animation, visual effects, lighting, sound, and various post-production processes. Through the program, participants strengthen their ability to effectively articulate their film’s creative vision and collaborate across a variety of disciplines.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is directed by Jarelle Dampier and written by Khaila Amazan, and produced by LENS program creators Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg. Rounding out the inaugural LENS team are Clara Chan who served as vfx supervisor and Joe Darko who served as animation supervisor.

It's pretty crazy because, on some Spider-Man comics, Peter expresses how much he hates when his spider sense goes off. Like, imagine a constant tingle on your head, screaming for you that there is danger, even for the most mundane things. If any of the spider people got into a snowball fight, and someone even aimed a snowball at them, that same tingle would go off the same way it would if someone was aiming a gun at him. So, imagine that miles, that has been spiderman for a max of 2 years, has been feeling that tingle, not even getting used to it. Besides, he's a teenager. If the spider sense goes off when he's anxious, then he must be feeling that tingle a whole lot.

I like how this film is basically a middle-finger to all of the people claiming that Miles is "too perfect". It isn't everyday where we get to see some of our favorite heroes mentally struggling outside of the masks; Which just goes to show that there are way more forms to suffering outside of growing up poor and having you loved ones die. Miles isn't too perfect, he's just different And that is what makes him his own Spider-man

It's funny you think this fixes that criticism specifically. If we actually saw the conversation with his dad, MAYBE. Instead, we have a goofy and shallow visualization of the surface level problems we already know. What a perfect visualisation of stress/anxiety induced sleep paralysis. Miles not able to move, seeing dark things pushing on his chest with the wheight of an elephant is basically exactly how it plays out a lot of times (i have a lot of those). The willingness he has to hear out his son without a second question inspired me. This is the kind of dad I want to be when the time comes. Thank you for the great writing and work y'all put in to make stories like this possible.

Man that's actually really sad. He's being crushed by all of his responsibilities, and while the shadow Miles at first embodies them all, it morphs into his greatest source of stress: becoming Spiderman. He can't tell anybody for their safety, not even when he opens up to his dad here. This leads to his desperation in Across the Spiderverse to reunite with Spiderpeople for support, and he learns that the Spider Society sees him as an unwitting enemy.

i appreciate that miles is a genuinely authentic portrayal of a teenager. in the movies, he's very defiant of the idea of "this is how it's supposed to be" which is exactly how kids his age are, and in this, he's dealing with so many feelings that not even an adult mind has the ability to compartmentalize and deal with efficiently, and so it results in exactly what we see in this short, being distant, stressed, tense, and even sleep paralysis and nightmares. miles is a great character dealing with real problems just in a fantastical superhuman setting. it's a great example of how to do stories that are "grounded" without being boring, and still being fantastical.

I had to be pulled out in 7th grade, and tried going back my senior year, but graduated halfway through because I couldn't take it. I'm currently seeing a therapist, and working through my emotions, and it helps! You do have to find the right one though, that's the thing that not many people tell you. I am happy yet sad to know that I'm not alone on this battle, because again, it's not something I would wish on my worst enemy. It is nice to know however that others can truly sympathize .

As someone who's currently going through a panic/anxiety attack at the time of this comment, 3:02 onward just hits really close to home because it scares me about the "what-ifs" or what I feel like I'm doing wrong. And it doesn't help that I've had a history of seizures, either, which makes me even more scared.

I’m sorry you’re going through a such a tough time. Just remember that no matter what you are not alone. In this short film even when Miles felt like all of his fears and anxieties were too much for him to handle, he realized that he had people in his life who he could open up to in order to help him deal with what he’s going through. It may not make these problems suddenly go away but it feels better to know that no matter what you have people in your corner who will be by your side when you are struggling and help carry the burdens that are weighing in you. Miles’ dad is a source of strength for him, even now he is literally fighting the multiverse for him. So If you have anyone in your life who you can talk to please do so, because you will feel so much better knowing that you don’t have to isolate yourself and suffer alone. I believe in you and I hope you feel better soon.

Some details that I noticed and loved: - Each panel depicting Miles's struggles at the beginning have a force that is aimed towards his character in the centre; i.e., the building falling to the right, the punch coming in from the left, his parents leaning down as he sits below them, etc. Very symbolic. - The inside of the house seeming to be very brightly illuminated, only to be just as dark as outside. Could be representing how we try in find comfort in familiarity but it doesnt always work, or maybe that Miles's dark mood follows him even into safer and more comfortable areas. - Even though Jeff was no danger to Miles, his anxiety is so high that his spidey senses perceived even a small scare prank as dangerous. He even has to take deep breaths and hold onto the table to calm himself down afterwards (also Miles's little 'Ah!' scream is so cute oml). - Jeff going out of his way to make their time special including ordering 2 giant tubs of popcorn lol - Miles slamming the door without really meaning too because he's so tired and anxious. - Trying to calm himself down only for his anxiety (oncoming panic attack) to trigger his spidey senses. - The outside being portrayed as much more beautiful and calm than his room. Something something, the freedom outside confined spaces, something something, locking ourselves in tight boxes to meet expectations, something something. - PLAYING LOUD MUSIC TO DISTRACT FROM ANXIETY HE'S JUST LIKE ME FR - One of the lens on his mask being shattered, symbolising how his perception on being Spiderman has changed. He can no longer see heroism through a lens; he has to see it for what it really is, the good and bad. Also symbolic for his mentality. - The comic panels having Miles be forced in ever direction except for up. The contrast of the bright yellow and red (usually used for symbolising caution or hazards) against the background blue. - "I'm bugging." Lol. Nice one. Even through a panic attack, mans still gotta say those stupid spider puns. - Idk if Im reaching way to far here but fuck it; the sleep paralysis demon coming down towards the camera in contrast to Miles's iconic moment in the first movie where he was rising against the backdrop of the city. Also could just be symbolising how his panic is crushing him. Idk choose your favourite. - Colour scheme changing on the train from blue to red as the sleep paralysis demon appears. - Miles only calming down properly when he decides to talk with his dad about his stress. The lighting in the house also becomes a lot more warmer too. - Going outside where it's been established as much more calm and serene than Miles's room (also really good advice to anyone going through anxiety - GO FOR A WALK OUTSIDE. Trust me, it helps). Fan-fucking-tastic animation and story 10/10. My hype for BTSV is through the roof!

Absolutely brilliant. I loved the part where you compared the sleep paralysis Miles to his first scene in the movie where he overcomes fear and embraces being Spider-Man to now being under pressure and feeling crushed by "Spider-Man". I really want yo explain, in my own words, what Spider-Man is but I would be here forever, but I think it means what Uncle Ben always said to Peter. That's me just being lazy though. Oh my gosh brilliant observation, I loved it ❤️

You nailed the break down. In case you didn't know, "I'm buggin" is a common saying among New Yorkers to say, "You're crazy or acting out of character" [like being scared of a bug (also subtly telegraphing the sequence where he runs from spiders)]. There's nuance and purpose while being authentic behind that one line alone & an example of why the Spiderverse movies are the best superhero movies. *That's what happens you have people behind it who care about what they are making & not looking for a quick buck*

I love that what helped him was simply talking about his problems with a person he knew cared. (1) If you're going through something, simply doing that can really help lessen the intensity. (2) If you're a parent or support person in someone's life, and they don't seem to notice that you care even though you're trying to show them, they can still sense it, and all that effort will pay off when they come to you for help when they really need it.

3:07 Two things: 1). A “Hang In There” poster right behind Miles in the bottom right corner. 2) Miles analyzed The Odyssey, an Ancient Greek epic poem about war hero King Odysseus and his 10 year journey back to his home of Ithaca. Throughout the story, Poseidon prevents Odysseus from returning back to Ithaca because Odysseus blinded his son and won the war against the Trojans (whom Poseidon sided with). Odysseus’ mental health is a prominent theme throughout the story as he struggles with intense grief and guilt from the war, and simply wishing to return back home to his family. Going back to Miles, he is Spider-Man - an extremely popular superhero who saves people and fights against evil. He has a LOT of expectations and pressure on his shoulders, and he is only a teenager. While Odysseus is 30-40 years old throughout The Odyssey, he was only 20 years old when he left for Troy to fight in one of the largest and greatest battles of his world. He was a key factor in the victory over Troy because of his intelligence and strength. But Miles and Odysseus are more than just their strengths and personas they put on. They both struggle with their mental health, and I feel that Miles could connect with Odysseus’ character because of his reliability. (*Also, Miles’ teacher noted his paper as “incomplete” - this could literally symbolize how Miles’ story is not complete yet 👀)

I love how this puts into perspective not only how much of a psychological burden being Spider-Man and having all that responsibility while needing to keep it all secret and bottled up really is, but also the pain he felt in Across the Spider-Verse when he found out his friends, in his eyes the only people in literally all the universes he feels he can talk to, all abandoned him. He puts his life on the line every single day while trying to balance his every day life and keep his family safe by emotionally pushing them away and keeping secrets, then he finally gets to meet all the people he thought he could rely on and trust again and finds out they chose not to visit him for years.
