The Spider-Man that Became a Meme

Ойын-сауық

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a Spider can. We all know the words, even though they came from a series that’s nearing 55 years old! For many, Spider-Man’s first animated series in 1967 was their introduction to the character and many of his villains, and understandably so, as Spider-Man debuted in comics only 5 years prior to this TV series hitting the airwaves. These days, while the show has iconic elements, it’s taken on new life as a bit of a meme factory, thanks to social media. But what about the actual content of the show? Is it a worthwhile adaptation of the character and his stories? There’s only one way to find out.

My fav “meme-able sequence” I’ve seen from this show (and tbf I don’t know the context but) is when spider-man shoots some web onto a window, then punches a hole in the glass, then just opens it. It’s not like he reached in and unlocked the window, he just opened it bc apparently it wasn’t locked to begin with. Both him shooting the web and him punching the glass was completely unnecessary lol

That one joke has literally convinced me to watch the show. Small jokes that often don’t make it to reviews ARE my joy. The idea of Webbing, breaking and then just straight up opening a completely unlocked window is such a good visual gag. I hope there’s plenty of that kind of gag! Sounds like a good goofy experience.

@@mrcritical6751 MINOR SPOILERS I kinda thought that was the point considering his whole character is supposed to be misguided but wrong and coming from an understanding place. Like a representation of spidey fans, the legacy of Spider-Man and miles reception alike mixed in with general interpretations of traits 2099 already had. I mean out of a whole legion of spidermen all on the same side as him, (some of which being literal animals) he’s the only one foaming at the mouth with bloodshot eyes and running on all fours. Characters question if he’s even really a Spider-Man/hero at all numerous times in the movie with how obsessed he is about upholding his legacy despite not being much like peter or his stories at all. I feel like him building a legion of spider people who aren’t the type to go against him is intentional otherwise the miles incident he had on the subway would happen with 10 other spidermen a week lmao. So of course his choosing his shitty. Even his grudge and logic towards miles doesn’t make any sense anyways considering it was kingpin who started all this. Miles didn’t even have to help but chose and was pushed to through the blessing of 2 (and later 6) spidermen total. If he chose to do nothing the whole spiderverse would be fucked and there’d be a billion more spots running around 💀 So Miguel’s logic clearly isn’t all there

@@theradionicrevival8068 honestly I think Miguel likely became more picky after he destroyed the other 2099 universe. He wouldn’t have picked Peni and Peter B if he was that reluctant to recruit Gwen, my guess is after he realised what anomalies and canon events were he became much sterner in his selection process and kept all spider-people who’d likely turn on him, refuse to help keep canon events going and would take Miles’ side out. Honestly the one decision I’m questioning is Pravitr as he hasn’t experienced his canon events yet, has only been Spider-man for 6 months and can’t take shit seriously cause he thinks being Spider-man is easy, why would Miguel hire him? Was he hiding the canon events from him?

It really speaks to Ralph Bakshi‘s legendary status just seeing the difference between seasons 1 and 2. Season 1 is about what you expect for a low budget 60s cartoon, so for the guy to suddenly inject so much mood and atmosphere on an even SMALLER budget really is just such a good example of his strengths as an animator. I don’t love everything he’s made, but damn if the man never fails to create something worth looking at.

I'll tell ya one thing, in the comics Spidey did make himself stuff out of webs more foten then you'd might think, of course it never went as far as a web-boat I love how when you look at the way The Rhino moves you can see that they were capable talented animators, they just weren't used to animating outside of comedy, with these characters who had human proportions and had to look cool or scary instead of stupid or silly.

Still my absolute favorite animated Spider Man show outside of the great 90's Fox cartoon. In addition to the greatest theme song of any superhero cartoon, It's my childhood in vivid color and the show that cemented my lifetime love of the comics and the character.

As a child, i saw the repeats of those psychedelic episodes. In the 70s. Unattended. Different Worlds in so any way.

I first saw this show on video when I rented a tape from a local video store in second grade. The tape had the origin episode on it and it was fantastic. It’s very interesting to know that’s not the real start of the series. Very in depth review, lots of good jokes too! I had to stop the video several times because I couldn’t contain my laughter!

It's interesting to note that this show was made _long_ before the Symbiote suit, and thus Venom, was added to Spidey lore - so for anyone who returns to this nowadays, that's quite a notable omission.

You know that same moment of Scorpian going after J.J. Jameson for having Gargan getting stuck in his suite and then Spider-Man saving J.J. by defeating Scorpian was used for the 1999 Spider-Man video game.

I have the entire series on DVD...and I couldn't only get through a few episodes of the second season. As soon as I saw "Mysterio", my interest waned rapidly. Having said that, I adore the first season. One of my favorite bits was in "Sands of Crime". After that huge tussle using construction equipment, Sandman falls into a water trough and immediately yells, "WATER?! I'm soggy! I can't do anything!"

I wish they'd make a whole new retro animated feature in the same animation style, the same music same voices in a crazy, groovy, far out psychedelic adventure.

I was born in 96 I grew up on Raimi’s Spider-Man but USM was my first Spider-Man cartoon And it will forever be special for that The show does have its own comics and does crossover with the 60s Spider-Man cartoon so that’s fun USM did do well at developing its main cast members and had the guts to be unique and one of a kind from any other Spider-Man adaptation and break the traditional and they have my respect for that It did something differently I’ve seen more people look back on USM better compared to a few years ago I think that’s because people who grew up with it are now old enough to form their own opinions and talk about their love for it Same will be for sm17 in a few years no doubt

I'd love to see you follow this up with the 80's Spider-Man cartoon retrospective. It was one season with 26 episodes but very much a spiritual successor to those first 38 episodes of 60's Spider-Man imo. There were some ridiculous, cheesy, and fun stories in that series as well. If the 80's series had the widespread viewership the 60's series had, it would probably have some notable memes as well, imo.
