The Absurdity of Spider-Man Unlimited

Ойын-сауық

Spider-Man Unlimited is arguably the weirdest Spider-Man adaptation of all time. Arguably. Written as a loose follow up to Spider-Man The Animated Series of the 90s, and I do mean LOOSE, this series took an entirely different approach to telling a Spidey story. I would argue that this show nearly feels like it was written as an entirely different story with its own characters and lore, and THEN they decided to drop Spidey and a few recognizable Spidey characters into the mix. Now there’s no evidence that this is what they did, but it does FEEL like it. But that isn’t necessarily a criticism, either, because while it is absolutely an anomaly in the long list of Spider-Man animated series, it has a ton of charm and some really interesting characters. PLUS we’re about to see this version of Spidey again in the upcoming Across the Spider-Verse film! Wild times! So join me as we dive deep into the absurdity of Spider-Man: Unlimited

Spidey's nanotech suit decades before he got it in live action. And here it feels more earned since he's older and more experienced and isn't just given it. I always love when designers make a more unique and memorable suit instead of repeating the same blue and red. It's nice but all the blue-red ones meld together. That's why I appreciate the PS4 suit. There was backlash and some time to get used to it, but now it's instantly recognizable. The same reason I enjoy the edgy black-red suit WITH CAPE. That and nostalgia. I was so confused when I saw what the High Evolutionary actually looks like in the comics 😅

  • @kindlingking

    @kindlingking

    Жыл бұрын

@@HotDogTimeMachine385 I think the difference between mcu nanotech suits and unlimited one is the latter feeling like an actual tangible thing rather than an excuse to not bother with suit up scenes. Nanotech suit in unlimited has its unique abilities (like operating from a distance or invisibility), but also not invulnerable (that epic saga of Spidey trying to fix his sonic devices every two episodes). You can feel this suit is right here, where in the mcu they don't even bother with actors wearing props to paint CGI suits over. And when an animated cartoon feels more real than life action, something definitely went wrong somewhere.

Man, that initial premise of the Counter Peter and Uncle Ben is so good, even if it feels a bit too much like the Armored Spider-Man from the Spider-Man: TAS finale. It also reminds me of Peter David's original conceit for the Alchemax CEO in Spider-Man 2099, who was supposed to be an older, evil Peter. He ended up using that plot reveal for the game Edge of Time decades later.

This series was odd, but it was a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure it was made to compete with "Batman Beyond" and it's more futuristic setting. Late 90's had the whole "Next Millennium" and Y2K settings for many things, so either as a High Tech future or a post-apocalypse world... The whole cliff hanger problem is writers angling for another season, hoping the fan's out cry would convince the studios they need a conclusion.

An interesting note about the High Evolutionary seemingly coming out of nowhere: He very directly comes from a specific episode of the 90s X-Men cartoon. The same character, the same design, the same motivation, the High Evolutionary escapes that episode and flees to an alternate dimension to create Counter Earth, this show is a direct continuation of his storyline. Even the "Knights of Wundagore" are a direct reference to that episode. Also, with Guardians 3 now released, it's pretty clear that counter-earth being full of animal hybrids is just the High Evolutionary's thing.

Also, and this could easily just be my perception as a 12 and 13-year-old TV viewer at the time, but in the very late 90s and early 00s, it felt like Fox was incredibly trigger happy when it came to canceling new shows before they could find their groove and an audience. The curious thing about Spider-Man Unlimited is that it's radically different setting is its biggest weakness but also its biggest strength, even after so many years i still remember it for being so unique and diferent to ani other version of Spider-man, and although it feels like the least "Spiderman" of all the shows, it still manages to feel like it belong in the "Marvel" world, from having Nick fury and name droping Reed, to having the High Evolutionary as the main bad guy (he also apears in the X-Men cartoon and is going to be the villain in the new GotG movie), some of the comic stuff i didn't get it at the moment and only now looking back can trully apreciate, like: Counter Earth, Wundagore, John turning into a wherewolf (Man-Wolf), X-51(Machine Man), the new costume based on Spiderman 2099, etc. (Karen O'Malley looking like Elsa Bloodstone is definitely a coinsidency, but cant stop thinking how similar they are)

I recently rewatched the series. I'm glad I finally got resolved where the vague memories of a kid with one glove came from (Mummy Kid's backstory.) but other than that, I felt like Spidey used his new powers too infrequently to bother with them. I remember them being every other episode. It was also not nearly as engaging or fun as the TAS show. My favourite joke in the series in when John and Spidey meet (paraphrased). "How can we be sure you're the real Spider-Man?" "John, are you so stupid that you'd believe your father's lies about me?" "Okay, that checks out."

The artstyle and villains also reflect that. I love that honestly. This is to Spider-Man like what Batman Beyond is to Batman (though a Spider-Man 2099 show would've been awesome). It’s literally like Spider-Man was pulled out of his own “spiderverse” and was pulled into a more aligned marvel universe. With characters like High evolutionary, Knights of Wundagore and places like Counter earth & Mount Wundagore all being connected in the comics and most of it about to come to light in the MCU/GOTG3

I remember watching and enjoying this show as a kid. My two thoughts watching this video: 1) I didn't connect them at the time, but Spidey's initial experience on Counter-Earth (a strange futuristic city that uses his world as a template, accidentally running afoul of that world's mundane traffic, being chased by a bunch of high-level warriors that enforce this world's oppressive government, being brought before their leader, and escaping and finding himself teamed up with the scrappy rebels that form the show's main supporting cast) is very similar to Sonic's in Sonic Prime. I know neither of these shows are the first ones to invent this scenario, but having just watched Sonic Prime not too long ago, it's amazing how much their initial story beats parallel each other. 2) Given how Marvel wasn't allowing the showrunners to use almost anything from the main Spider-Man canon due to upcoming movies and the like, I'm legitimately surprised that we got the cameos that we did get in the first episode, like Mary Jane Watson and J. Jonah Jameson. Considering that the show designed an entirely different suit for Spidey to wear in this series, I'm surprised that such a large portion of the premier (as well as a section of the opening them) featured the classic suit.

Also Romano also was Spider Man in the popular PS1 game from 2000 and the one from the year after too, so after this show as cancelled I was happy to hear his performance again in the video games. Sure he sounds a bit more cocky than Christopher Daniel Barnes, but I think his voice works really well, and it took me years to realize they weren't the same guy when I played Spider Man from 2000 side by side with watching the show that came before Unlimited. Only once I beat Enter Electro did it dawn on me the actors were different.

Not a bad show but I felt like they were just trying to get a show like Batman Beyond and how they did it, with spins on his villains differently. Don’t know why, but that’s how it struck me. As a matter of fact, they did the human and animals being combined thing on Beyond too. Also, when Fox tried airing this show, it ended up airing against Pokemon. Whoever programmed it to premiere the same time, needs to be webbed up lol. Seriously though, who decided at Fox Kids or Fox Network that it would be a great idea to air against the phenomenon called Pokemon? Yikes that was a bad idea. Felt like the network was just bitter because they couldn’t get the rights to air Pokemon. I loved Spider-Man: TAS but I couldn’t get into Spider-Man: Unlimited. I gave it two episodes but it just didn’t grab me like Spider-Man: TAS. I do love the actors and the guy who played Peter in this show went on to play Bruce Wayne in The Batman. It’s very interesting what you said about the show being similar to Batman Beyond because that’s actually a big reason why the makers of Spiderman Unlimited didn’t make it a Spiderman 2099 series. They were worried that the show would be too similar to Batman Beyond so they scrapped the idea. Funny thing is, Batman Beyond actually took some inspiration from the Spiderman 2099 comics. So the fact that Spiderman Unlimited still got that feeling of being similar to Batman Beyond is just ironic. Also, I personally didn’t get the feel that it was similar to BB. I see your points, otherwise I wouldn’t be typing this comment at all. But I got a different feeling from the show, and I knew all that information before watching it.

@@Elvusmiw it was its own thing that was very loosely tied into the original animated series by the first episode of this one.

I grew up on Spider-man the Animated Series, and its version of Venom and Carnage were integral to my enjoyment of it, so when this show came out I reeeeeeeally latched onto the TAS connections. However, all the Counter Earth Beastial stuff was pretty off-putting for me, and I remember tuning out if Venom and Carnage weren't in an episode. Case in point, I didn't known Goblin and Vulture were even in it until years later. And I didn't know Electro or Kraven were in it until...this video xD At least Electro. I have some vague fever dream recollections of Kraven. But you're right about the Venom episode being the crown jewel of this series. I adored it, and Venom and Carnage fusing at the end was metal AF to my eight-year-old self.

The mega man x vibes of the instrumental, Dan’s dad having a cameo, the stop motion animation, and the amount of bionicle pieces I could spot? And of course Dan’s beautiful voice to top it all off, this is an absolute treat!

This is fascinating. Was a big fan of the 90's Spider-Man Animated Series but never knew about this one!

I love this show. I think its a great setting for Spider-Man. Being in the middle of a war between man and beast. Im personally tired of superhero stories taking place on Earth. I think it limits what you can do with the story.

Rino Romano is my favorite Spider-Man voice. Maybe it's because I played those two PlayStation Spider-Man games from 2000-2001 over and over but he nails the jokes and serious moments too

Thankfully, Rino Romano would be the voice of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the PS1 video game released just one year after Unlimited, where his excellent talent and portrayal would be witnessed by even more fans. ...I am still upset he wasn't casted in Shattered Dimensions.

This video makes me want to see this show even more. Didn't know it existed until after it's run was over, and it seems fresh and unique, even though it may seem like unfamiliar territory.

It's funny how the plot of the High Evolutionary is the same used in Guardians 3, 20 years later.

Most of this setup comes from the first Adam Warlock series. Counter Earth, the High Evolutionary, the Beast Men and the rebels all come from there and are explained in meticulous detail in those first few issues. It is classic 70s Marvel craziness. I had no idea it was adapted for Spider-Man.

You know what could have been an interesting angle? Go with the idea of Peter actually getting work as a scientist on Counter Earth. It's something that so often seems forgotten about Peter as a character, photography was something he picked up to pay the bills, it was never his be all end all, never where he wanted to go in life. He was studying to be a scientist, probably a chemist seeing as the first big invention we see from him is the web fluid, and in the comics before he even got his powers, he was a Science Major in College (also why in the comics for a while he actually left the News Paper business and became a Science Teacher). Which I feel could have been an interesting thing to examine, Peter on some levels, is closer to what he might want out of Life on Counter Earth than he is on his home world. Like maybe he could be helping out in the slums as a Teacher, or maybe have him Tutoring. Or maybe have him get a job as a research assistant somewhere, just a job that actually makes use of the skill set he was developing before he became a Superhero and in theory was what he intended to build his professional life around.

As incredible as it is, this is all rooted in actual (obscure) canon that Spider-Man has actually interracted with in his history.

I loved this show as a kid. Glad to see someone talk about it, and to be fairly positive for once! Anytime I hear it brought it up, it's usually "oh yeah that show, the less said the better." And I always thought it was really interesting as an alt-universe story. I especially loved their Kraven. I remember he was basically taking a formula to enhance his abilities, but at the expense that it was slowly killing him. And he basically was just like, "Yeah I don't care. Totally worth it." Like, that's the most Kraven idea I've heard, it's dope and I'd even be happy to put the same concept on a main universe Kraven cause it just fits him. That cliffhanger sucks... This show and Silver Surfer TAS both ended on cliffhangers, and I'm still mad about it. The two somewhat darker more existential 90s cartoons both got dumped on. Anyway... you make me wanna rewatch as an adult and see how it holds up. I've been worried it wouldn't, but now I'm thinking that while flawed, I may still get something out of it that would be fun to explore. So thanks for that!

This show even with it's flaws was enjoyable, deserved another season instead of that cliffhanger ending. It was definitely a fun, gritty tv series with some cool concepts.
