The Speedy Rise of the Energy Drink

Ойын-сауық

Weird History Food is gonna turn this up to 11 with the History of Energy Drinks. Energy drinks, namely Red Bull, Monster, and the always pleasant Four Loko are pretty well-known and popular brands, but they weren't the first energy drink. No, that actually happened way back in the 1960s in Japan. Try not to get the jitters as we cover all you need to know about the heart-pumping energy drink. This video may or may not give you wiiinnngggssss.

I remember back when Four Loko and Spark were being sold as energy drinks. I was working at a convenience store when the ban happened. People were buying as many as they could carry, and the space for it was bare for about a month after. And now Monster has expanded its brand into the alcoholic department with "The Beast".

When I was in college I used to down two Amps or Red Bulls a day. On Thanksgiving day one year I downed two energy drinks and then went to black Friday shopping that night on a whim and took a five hour energy when I got there. I ended up hallucinating in my car for much of the night before being driven home and only getting two hours of sleep over the next couple days. I ended up going to doctors appointments for three months trying to figure out why I had the jitters and couldn't focus. Well, I had stopped drinking the energy drinks cold turkey after my black Friday experience because it scared the crap out of me. My doctors determined I had forced myself into detox because my body had become dependent on it. After four months I returned to normal and never touched an energy drink again. It's been about ten years or so since I drank one.

During the 2000s, I consumed an ungodly amount of caffeine and energy drinks and to this day, I am relieved to have survived. For 20-somethings involved in the rave / club / nightlife scenes during that time, it was not unusual to get cases of free beverages. I had tons of free Red Bull and Sparks. We would also get cases of drinks for free to sell at our parties. I have no doubt that this practice, more than any media advertising, is what made Red Bull so popular. Lipovitan-D is kind of a different animal with a very different market. It was for people of my mom's generation and I still remember the commercials I'd see on the Japanese TV station when I was a kid. "Tonic" beverages are still a huge seller in Japan, especially for things like collagen supplements. One category that I could see eventually taking off in the West would be "jelly" drinks -- these were the energy boosters marketed to young people in Japan in the 90s and they continue to evolve and be popular today. Mostly they are not caffeinated these days and some contain things like collagen, just like Japanese tonic beverages.

Red Bull's too weak. Only 84 mg of caffeine in one of those 250-mL cans. Roughly the same amount of caffeine as a 20-ounce MTN Dew or a liter of Pepsi, which tastes better.

I remember when I went to Van's Warped Tour around the same time all these energy drinks were on the rise. This one surf/skate company "Lost" did a collab with Hansen (before Monster??) and they had a Tent at the event which had a wheel to spin to see how many drinks you won. This one kid won a whole case of this drink. Mind you as kids back then we were just dropped off with little to no money and called our parents to pick us up after event was over . Water costs $$$ at events but they were just handing out these energy drinks. Long story short I saw the same kid at McDonald's and he was having anxiety and was shaking really bad because he finished most of the case he won. His mom picked him up soon after. The good ol' times =D

Fun fact I sorta got to play with them at the same show (Jack's mannequin) with my first band at a University =D Also I believe 2005 was my 1st Warped. I remember vividly the singer from taking back Sunday hanging upside down from the stage lighting rig lol. Oh I never went to autograph signings I just walked up and asked while the members were sitting there, but they weren't the huge bands they young new up and coming bands like Movements,Turnstile, Knucklepuck etc. I think I did stay in a line for Andy Black with a friend but that was the only time lol.

Monster has a history of filing frivolous trademark lawsuits, mostly against game studios (indie and big corporate). How they continue to get support from gamers is beyond me, though I do remember a time when they were the "better" energy drink company for that market. But hey, at least it's not Rockstar. Rockstar had super cringe people marketing for them and at least where I live, it was considered to be an energy drink for try-hards. It was the fedora of energy drinks.

I didn't get my diagnosis of ADHD until in my early 30s, not as noticeable really as I have Inattentive type, formerly known as ADD. Which explains why I still somehow remember fondly going to a soccer tournament in Sweden with the team I was on back then, as a Norwegian we didn't have energy drinks, as they were illegal still as they hadn't been approved, Norway still had a ban on artificial coloring back then. This was in 1998, we were 12-13, and we realized the shops were selling Red Bull! The reason I remember it... is how oddly well rested I felt on that trip, we were sleeping on air mattresses in a school classroom, it didn't make sense! Along with the fact that after like 6 cans of Red Bull, 1 can of Jolt Coke, and one of those frozen popsicles that you squeeze on the bottom to push up the icee or whatever they're called, but in energy drink form by the energy drink called Magic, I was the first one to fall asleep, and I slept well! I was so well rested it actually sticks in my mind still how nice that was... Turns out energy drinks... can function similarly to ADHD medication, as it makes you more relaxed, and from what I was told, ADHD never turns off, so even while you're sleeping it's going on, so in a lot of cases despite having slept, people with ADHD don't feel well rested after sleeping, thus.... I remember that one time when I was a kid I felt well rested, without knowing why. And it kinda makes sense really, as in the beginning of the video amphetamines were mentioned, that's basically my medication, ADHD medications vary some, but I think the most common ones are based on amphetamines, so if energy drinks were made to replace what my medication does... while not as affective as the medication of course, or it'd not be sold in stores, it makes sense. Also explains why I thought people who got energetic from coffee or energy drinks were just riding high on placebo.

Lol, that's funny! I didn't know that. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD as well (I'm 46, so pretty late), and have a similar experience from about twenty years ago that came to mind as I was being tested. I was at a party at a friend's collective, drinking and all that. Someone pulled out a bag of speed and offered it to me and two others. I'd never done any drugs besides marijuana (haven't since, either), but decided to snort with the others. In the five minutes after, I'd managed to fall asleep on the floor while the others went crazy on the dance floor 🤣 When I mentioned it to my doctor, she said, "yeah, that's a pretty good indicator that you do indeed have ADHD." 😂

It'll four in the morning and I'll be drinking a strong espresso and bam, sleepy time. People go on about a "crash" after caffeine, but I get no energy at all, just tired.
