"The Sound of Silence" vocal ANALYSIS of Geoff's deep bass cover!

It's no secret: I love Geoff Castellucci's low booming bass, and I love "The Sound of Silence" cover by Disturbed. But to have Geoff Castellucci now cover "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel? This is a match made in heaven. Watch as I melt during this amazing rendition!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Geoff Castellucci performing "The Sound of Silence" for the first time.

Another fan said that the original S&G was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger and Geoff's was the sorrow. I totally agree. Geoff is a master at bringing out the emotions of a song and this one hit all the feels. As a contralto I'm drawn to bass voices, and Geoff's in particular, but I'm loving hearing more of his upper range. The background music/percussion just added to the anticipation. I can't even imagine what we'll hear in the future because every time I think it can't get better it does.

I honestly don't know where to begin with this piece. Between the incredible dynamic range throughout the pieces - and how dramatic the change from mellow, almost melancholy to HUGE presence with complex layered chords and right back down to a simple melody and simple piano was. Any more drastic and I think it would have been too abrupt, but Geoff balanced it perfectly. Then add in the deep, rich, low intonation of the beginning of the piece, and again, any more and you'd almost call it muddy, but it's just... balanced. Then the sharp rise into such a high range, which not only balances the dynamic change but also showcases Geoff's incredible range. No one could argue that Disturbed's cover was amazing, but Geoff's is my absolute favorite rendition now.

For me, the shift came with Ain't No Sunshine. Prior to that he tended to be low key, emotionally. Sly humor, like in Monster Mash, but emotions were generally understated. Subtle. But after the anguish and desolation he showed in ANS came the blatant flirting and humor in Way Down. Had we seen him smile so much in a video before that? Not to mention the booty shake! Till Then is a ~gasp~ love song. Exploring a wider emotional spectrum could just be a natural progression in Geoff's artistic development, getting more comfortable in doing solo work and challenging himself, and having time to focus on storytelling in videos since VoicePlay isn't touring. But ... I think a contributing factor is spending time with Cesar. The newest member of VoicePlay has a contagious, effervescent joie de vivre that you can see in almost every video. He's very expressive -- funny, sassy, affectionate, yet can also make us cry like he did in Can't Make You Love Me. I think the new guy is influencing the "old and boring" guys to let loose (like Layne did in ITHOTMK) ... and I love it.

The sound kind of like a creaking door opening is just before Geoff sings "Hello darkness, my old friend" so perhaps it was darkness entering.

I hadn't heard it before. Wow. Feels like I've now heard 3 different versions of the same lyrics, and each performance highlights a very different set of emotions. Incredible. Here I got huge vibes of: "It can be awkward to break the silence. But it will be worth it, you have something great to share." While the others felt like they were more focused on the listening part of it.

I could totally see this being a part of a soundtrack for a movie, but the way this cover hits me emotionally I think that I might end up crying at that part of the movie, because the more I listen to this cover I can't help by feel like it is not just the sound of silence, but the sound of loneliness.

I love Geoff’s interpretation of this and the arrangement is stunning. I really appreciate your analysis of it too as it helped clarify some things I was hearing and gave even more meaning to this version. I love it more and more each time I hear it! I think when you mention the dark, space/time feel it maybe sounds like the interstellar soundtrack. The score for that is incredible and has some other-worldly moments of being lost in time and space that I can hear Geoff bringing into his version now you’ve mentioned it. 😊

Gorgeous! I often say that S&G's version of this was a lament, Disturbed's version; a call to arms, and this version is incredibly uplifting! Amazing how the different renditions can also highlight subtle spins on the meaning of words. Thank you. 😊

It is an incredible experience to listen to Geoff and his arrangements. Considering how low he can go (ie Halo and Way Down) to his high register like in Voiceplay's Enemy feat alexa, as well as his solo cover of The Beatles song "Blackbird", he is a true vocal range master.

After a child of mine introduced me to Disturbed's version, I went down the rabbit-hole one night. Swedish metal bands owned the this-is-spectacularly-odd-in-my-ears award. A couple weeks later I was in a faculty meeting. There, apparently, needed to be agreement on how the humanities should present it/themselves. The bickering gave me a headache. Strange how many good ideas arise from headaches. So I took over the computer and projector and threw up Disturbed's version. The beautiful sound of silence from my fellows made me want to giggle. So, short story long, linking original, other culture, and new interpretation, while having the college's tech department doing all the bleeding stuff, turned out to be wonderful. While I had walked out of the meeting saying take it where you will, it made a difference. As does your work. Thank you

I would highly recommend Leonard Cohen's "Halleleujah" My favorite is Live in London. It was toward the end of his life and you can just feel the pain of his long life in the song. He was the original writer, but of course decades before. It's truly beautiful and emotional.

I'm so glad you covered this one right away! I think this is Geoff's best solo piece yet. You're right; the arrangement he made -- the melody adaptations and the harmonies -- are spellbinding. Of course Geoff's impressive range, especially the low bass notes, and the smoothness and quality of his voice are amazing and top-notch.

I've loved this song my whole life. My Favorite line : People writing songs that voices never share ... My interpretation of that line has changed the older I've gotten. What resonates for me now (age 57) is How each and everyone of us is doing that with the choices we make in our lives. Our Life is a song. How much do we share it? I believe that even the mistakes make our Song sweeter in the end. Maybe all that is just an old fart facing the shortening years? maybe. I guess you'd have to ask the people I shared it with. Thanks for Teaching

It is super educational. And you're so open about different music. Your background is so different from many of the metal reactions you do. But your vast knowledge has made me respect many known and loved musicians even more. Just great to learn something new about something I thought I knew. 🙂
