It definitely changed how I view and will be singing the song from now on. I covered this song as a guitarist and singer in several bands over the past 30 years, and even as a bass, I would go up like everyone else does when singing it. His choice to go down when hitting the chord root notes gave it a feeling of a lot more tension and definitely fits the song. He did shift the key up one half-step (from A#m to Bm), which does help. With Geoff's lowest chest note being an F#1 and also using that note as a subharmonic a lot, moving the key to Bm was a perfect choice.... F#1 is the inverted 5th of the Bm chord. He knew what he was doing here and did it perfectly.

@@nightmusic8 You must have listened to the same interview of Elizabeth that I did where one of the interviewers called her the Bob Ross of reactors!
It's pretty crazy that he just lets you - and thereby the world - have the clean vocals tracks for thorough analysis He is not trying to hide anything. "This I can do - This I can't do (yet)" Very honest guy :) I guess you can afford to be when you can do almost anything with your voice
I am a dyed in the wool metalhead. I'm also a trained baritone although my training is decades in the past. I never really enjoyed country/western music but this song had an edge to it that came pretty close to metal. 40 years of smoking and 25 years of hard drinking took a toll on my voice. I stopped smoking a few months ago and my drinking days ended in 2006 (knock on wood that they don't make a comeback because I still want a shot and a drag, just not today). Geoff's voice is otherworldly. On my best day, back in the day, I could almost make it down as low as Geoff but my sustain wasn't there. His vibrato is subtle but pronounced. This man has a set of pipes like nobody's business. Sustain like a pipe organ. Range from second-tenor to basso-profundo, pretty much where my vocal range was. He's a real talent to be sure. It was fun watching you listen to what he had to offer. ✌️🖖
You are my favorite analyzer! There are several that I listen to, you are the best. I also have a long list of reactors that I listen to. I also listen to Peter Barber, Jennifer Glatzhofer and QoFy. By the way, Jennifer told me that you are the queen of reactors. QoFy, in my opinion, is the bridge between reactors and analyzers. And yes, you definitely react, but reactors have less musical expertise, but know what they like... You are the best, and congratulations on the birth of your baby!😇
Great addition with the spectrogram! Btw, I had put your 'Pour unfortunate souls' through a spectrogram and there is at around 2/3rd a perfect rundown in the background of more than an octave. Consistent in tempo pitch and volume. Also Geoffs favorite note the A1 (in my opinion) is 55Hz and he regularly hits G1's at 52Hz and lower. Those notes are not visible on your spectrogram. I think you need to play around with the settings to make everything visible to al least 40 or 30Hz.
This is a fantastic analysis. And the fact that Geoff gave you the voice tracks to analyze shows that his character is just as strong as his voice and his overall talent. Geoff is built a little different; he is a brilliant musician !

I did notice that. I am glad he was so inclusive, that's really cool of him! I am naturally Right-handed. Mom is absolutely hopelessly Right-handed and I saw the aftermath and how she struggled at two different times in her life when she broke her elbow once and then her wrist, both times on her good arm. She really felt useless while she healed up because she has always been weak as a kitten and twice as clumsy with her Left hand and arm. I did not want to be like that. I made a concerted effort throughout a lot of my childhood to use my Left hand for many things. Eating, drinking, opening doors, especially the more simple stuff, I can do Lefty. I can shoot pool Lefty (I am really no good at pool either way so that hardly matters), I can shoot basketball Lefty and fire a paintball gun with reasonable accuracy with the Left hand. I just happen to be Left-Eye-Dominant, which I think has also really helped me in some ways, even if it makes me weird.

Just wanted to mention that the story is much like the old folktales of the Wild Hunt, only based in the American Old West. Which is why it’s such a great, spooky song. The imagery is so vivid: Devil cattle stampeding across a sky that just stretches on forever; burning brands and sparks flying from their hooves, all the while being chased by those men who are damned for their deeds (or misdeeds) in life. Add on top of that Geoff’s amazing vocals and masterful storytelling, this has become one of my favorite songs.
Hearing the isolated vocal track gives so much insight into just how controlled those low slide-offs are. No wavering at all until he's exactly where he wants the voice to be. His voice is amazing across all its range which is no mean feat. Appreciate your review pointing out some of the fantastic harmonic moments ... Geoff always pops those in and I love them!!

Agree. I’ve always loved low male voices (my dad had a pretty deep voice-nothing like this but deep). I hadn’t really realized how much I like them until I started listening to Geoff and Avi and The Bass Gang, etc.
His lows are so powerful and yet the diction is still incredibly clear.

Only YOU could take 26 minutes to analyze a 3:44 song. THANK YOU!! I think this is the first time we've seen a Geoff quintet. What's he gonna do next?!! Oh ... I also think Sweetwater is awesome.
Hands down the best arrangement he's ever done in a solo. I was watching it for the first time as well. Very impressive how he mixes it up! I like how he inverts the scale on this song from the original going down at the end of each section rather than up. As always you are adorable! TY for sharing it with us!
You're the only person/reactor I love to watch/hear dissecting a song. Love the addition of this device. You'recgreat at hearing several things on different levels simultaneously and how they contribute/impacts the song.
I discovered this song in a stack of piano music at Grandma's (I have played since age 6) and never actually heard a vocal version until I was nearly 20. It has remained one of my all time favorites and I like what Geoff has done with it. I note that Geoff likes to do his "solo" work WITH instruments while Tim Foust likes to stay acapella. I can only imagine what these two could do together other than lay waste to speakers. Again, I really like your analysis (spot on, of course).
@marshayoung9387
Жыл бұрын
Tim Foust does use musical instruments in his solos.
Another great analysis, Elizabeth! This is one of my very favorite spooky Country songs, and I recall as a young lad listening to the Marty Robbins' cover on the radio, and getting creeped out at the unique take on Hell presented in the lyrics. And rather than kidnap Geoff, the lyrics say why he (as the living cowboy that day) was allowed this 'Jacob Marley-esque' glimpse of 'cowboy hell' -- "Cowboy, change your ways today, or with us you will ride, tryin' to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies." Full. Body. Chills! 🤠
His speed is what astounds me. As a bass singer it takes more air in the lower registers to keep the note and the tone and moving quickly between notes gets more difficult the lower you go. He makes it sound so effortless to do big jumps and then quick moves at the lower part of his register.
Ok first time hearing this song and this version is just awesome. On a side note, this song is actually based on a true story that happened about half an hour from where I grew up in Crosby, Texas around 1890. It was an actual Stampede and cattle were driven off a cliff, and it's said that the ghost herd can still be seen& heard
Geoff is somehow simply beyond ridiculously talented... how did ALL this insane talent come to reside in ONE human being? I don't know but overjoyed to experience it!!
Gotta love how much smoother and more even his insane lows have gotten. It’s crazy how he can just drop into the basement so casually no matter how many times I hear it. Just so dang good
This was amazing. Thanks Elizabeth. Another fantastic voice you will probably enjoy is Tim Buckley. He had a very wide voice range of I think five octaves. The best song to initially demonstrate his talent would be 'Sweet Surrender' but there are many others to choose from too.
I was wondering if you were gonna do this one!
Great analysis Elizabeth, I am a huge fan of Geoff's myself like yourself I think, and hearing you discuss and the technical aspects of his voice in this track with the aid of visualizations of the wave forms and such just tickled my inner science geek side. This made it the complete experience enjoying the artistic aspect as well as the nerdy science angle as well.
Geoff's amazing voice soothes my soul.
The imagery in this music video is spot on. Her analysis of the vocals is vibrant as usual.
Thank you again for your great reaction/analysis of Geoff. The design in the opening of the song was designed by Geoff. Another talent of Geoff's to add to the many others he has.
Hearing the isolated vocals is EVERYTHING! 10x the fun! TY. :)
His version of this song is sooo epic! Thanks for the deep dive with the bonus solo track analysis!
As a baritone singer myself, it's always a rare treat when lower singing is appreciated. I feel like there's been too much push for bright and high vocals, and deeper tones get regulated to the background or as accents. So when I hear a singer performing in a low or middling range, it always catches my attention.

I was looking forward to your analysis of this one. 🙂 The spectrograph is an interesting tool, makes some details "visible", very nice. 🙂 I notice that many focus on the detail of the ghosts' eyes, but almost no-one seems to notice what IMHO is the most "ghostly" feature of them: they're translucent, you can see the landscape and the sky through them. WAAAY more noticeable, for me, yet very few seem to notice it. 🙂 BTW, since he covered "Way down", Geoff gave names to all the other Geoffs. Tina Guo & Serj Tankian - Moonhearts in space, would blow your mind. A Beautiful opera.
Outstanding analysis. You truly love diagnosis of people's vocals to a degree that few can.
I think that Daryll in particular did a great job in the backup vocals.
Love this, and super interesting with the spektrogram
Me: is an existing bass singer Geoff: Hold my tea
Elizabeth, I love watching your face when you watch Geoff and Voiceplay! You’re just beautiful, and your face just lights up!
If you want one where the Geoff clones really interact with each other, you should check out his cover of "Way Down"! It's so good!
One word for this performance and your analysis - brilliant.
I know that Johnny didn’t write it, but his version of this song remains my favorite Johnny Cash recording. As I’ve always loved spooky ghost stories and this time of year. So, Geoff’s choice of a cover is much appreciated. And the visualization of his isolated vocal lines was fascinating.
This is an epic song no matter who's done it. I'd love to see a dive into Johnny Cash who sang it originally, or even the scene from The Blues Brothers where it's sang by Dan Aykroyd I believe.

To be honest, it was originally written and performed by Stan Jones in 1948, Then covered by Burl Ives in 1949, That was quickly followed by Vaughn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and Peggy Lee giving their unique takes in 1949 as well. Skip forward to 1961 when "The Ramrods" did a purely instrumental rock version with shouts and whistles being overlaid, as well as Lawrence Welk and crew doing a cover as well. The Johnny Cash version did not come out until almost two decades later in 1979. Another instrumental version was recorded by the UK band "The Shadows" in 1980, and the rock guitar band "The Outlaws" did one of the most rousing variants to date in that same year. Dan Akroyd did a cover for the film "Blues Brothers 2000". There are many other performers who have done one off variants during concerts and other appearances as well. This version by Geoff Castelucci is a worthy addition to the legacy of Stan Jones.

@@edithdavis2848 Ah yes! I kind of dropped off with the Outlaws (one of my favorites) I know there have been a couple others and I thank you for the heads up on another fine rendition!
Absolutely incredible! Geoff needs to be fronting a prog metal band - I wonder if Arjen can fit him in to the next Ayreon album :)
At first, I found myself a little unsatisfied with the mix. It felt like only the lead vocal was properly over the instrumental background. The background vocals weren't clear enough. And then I figured it out. That's on purpose. Those are ghosts - you're never quite sure whether they are real or not. By keeping them further back in the mix, the sound gets the "ghost" quality in those voices the same way that ghosts aren't quite there visually. Very clever. And right on point.
I’ve been waiting for this! I love your videos! This song is probably the best version of Ghost Riders in The Sky that I have ever heard and I totally recommend listening to the karaoke track as well if you haven’t already. It’s GLORIOUS
Elizabeth...you simply MUST react to Tim Foust's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow / Stay." As with Geoff, he sings all parts, and it's amazing. And I think you might be REALLY surprised. :)
This analysis was so cool! I loved getting to hear and see those isolated vocals. Plus, I hadn't caught that moment when all the ghost Geoffs look at human Geoff. And I noticed for the first time that when they sing the word fire (on horses snortin' FIRE), each ghost Geoff reaches for his gun.
I always enjoy your reactions/breakdowns of songs and the joygasm you get when a singer does something you really like. When are you going to do a video?🎶🎶🖖🏾
Is it just me or have I watched the Charismatic Voice so much I'm starting to blow kisses back to her at the end?? Anyway, another wonderful, fine review and the digital analysis is a nice perk. Geoff's voice is incredible.
I've been dabbling in sub-harmonics and it's crazy that Geoff can just real voice notes that I need to go for with subharmonics
