He thinks Slava is dead because he uses the word “was”. He also suspects Tony in the killing because he asks about Silvio’s money. He knows that something went wrong. He suspects the money was not given and they killed him for the debt. He is trying to figure out if it is an individual issue or a greater issue, maybe an indirect warning. Given that he mourns in front of Tony it means that he suspects it was an individual issue and not one against the group. Therefore, to avoid more of his men dying he lets it go. The price of living the life.

Good analysis. Slava, being the intelligent forward thinking soldier most likely knows that something went wrong and his associate is dead. However, for the greater picture going forward he looks past this and knows that it’s something not worth letting interfere with business.

Yes Slava is a businessman. He is sentimental toward Valeriy but also knows one way or another, his life was not going to be long nor have a happy ending. Slava likely suspects Tony’s crew did something to Valeriy but without proof or even a body, it’s an easier choice to not pursue it and keep making good money off the New Jersey mob.

horribly gross misreading of this scene and the timeline. This scene happened literally while the Russian was in the trunk of Paulie's car and they were driving him out to the Pine Barrens. Slava doesn't have any idea that is friend got into a mishap with Paulie and Chris at this point. Slava at this point is upset due to other things going wrong in his friend's life.

I’ve always wondered how nothing ever came of this eventually. There were two possible outcomes: Valery survives and comes back to tell what happened or never returns. If he doesn’t return, I imagined Slava would’ve figured out who was behind his disappearance - the mobsters coming to pick up the money and then he would’ve retaliated or confronted Tony. And they never showed Tony going back to him for more transactions. Could’ve been better resolved.

Yeah, there was another rumored script that said Valery survived and they actually did hit him in the head but he got brain damage and forgot the whole thing. He does go back to Slava but it’s implied he became mentally challenged and could only do basic things. There was a rumored scene that Tony does go back to Slava and Valery is there but with a scar on his head and just sweeping the floor in silence.

But the fact that’s it’s posted slightly away from Tony indicates that while Slava is capable of violence, he prefers to avoid it. And the elegant design of the weapon portrays Slava’s class. Any genuine fan of Desert Eagles would tell you they're more for fun and showing off. They're really nothing more than a famous gun and pricey as hell for it.

I am surprised that there’s never been any sort of spin-off(s) because there’s an enormous amount of possibilities, from prequel-ish stiff like all those guys that were in jail forever and then got out and started raising havoc….there’s the whole storyline before and why they all were in jail and the duration of the sentences and so on… or plenty of choices, and it doesn’t even have to have anyone from the original show, just the same world, mention of names or something like that or a blurb on the news mentioned Sopranos or something like that
