And as I noted above, Russian speakers trying English can unintentionally sound rude by asking, 'put book down...' instead of 'put (the) book down....'

The story behind this episode is just as good as the episode. The writers were just messing around with the idea of "Paulie and Chrissy get lost in the woods" and it became one of the most talked about episodes of television in history.

Fun fact: Russian Spetsnaz learn how to use spades as a weapon. A Russian defector once said “the Spetsnaz soldier loves his spade more than his Kalashnikov.” It was seen as a weapon first and an entrenching tool second. So handing Valery that shovel was a big mistake.

Not only that, but he doubled back all the way around them since he obviously stole their car, and drove it all the way out of there as well. He probably suffered memory loss though, explains why Slava didn't have the whole family wiped out.

Christopher screaming and jumping back after he open the trunk and sees Valery thrashing around made me piss my pants laughing when this first aired. Still cracks me up years later, Imperioli is so damn good!

I’d like to think that surviving this is what got Valery out of his depression, like when Tone almost got whacked by the newsstand.

How dope would it be if Valery suffered memory loss from this, forgetting not only the confrontation with Paulie/Chris but also his war experiences that likely caused his depression. So Slava finds him at the hospital and Valery is back to normal again, no longer needing to drink away his demons. Slava doesn't care to delve further into what happened because he's just happy his close friend is back.

Looking at him running in the woods, I can tell that this interior decorator had the makings of a varsity athlete.

He didn't appear for 10 minutes, and he was the best character in the series

RIP Tony Sirico. What a legend!

It always seemed to me that Valery could have easily finished both of them with the shovel when they were down. Maybe being drunk in a trunk with an injury took the edge off his decorating skills.

I don't know about "easily." If he goes for Paulie, Chris might shoot him, and if he goes for Chris, Paulie might shoot him. But yeah, I think the smartest thing to do would have been to grab one of their guns. Of course, people aren't always that smart when they are drunk and in a life-or-death situation.

Here's my idea for an HBO movie. As far as we know, Paulie & Patsy were the lone 'survivors' in the war with NY. They took over 'whatever is left' in New Jersey but they are run by New York headed by Little Carmine. Times have changed and both families are losing what was once theirs to the Russian Mafia but have kept the peace. Valery has been plotting his revenge against Paulie for years and finally reveals himself. It will have a conclusive ending as opposed to the Sopranos finale. Minor characters will make cameos as well.

Paulie was a soldier in his youth (marine i think). Chris was an excellent marksman and a decent fighter for his size, at least before he got fucked up on drugs. Highly doubt he died, he was able to not only steal Paulie's car, but drove it all the way out of the Pine Barrens.

Paulie's shoe was my favourite character, I wish they did more with it

Valery did a good job putting up all those Christmas ornaments decorations

I wish they did more with that universal remote, he was my favorite character.

So fun fact. I noticed valery voice and it sounded so familiar. He voice acted ray bulgarin In GTA 4.

Valery offered them drinks when they came in and Paulie still started this whole mess by busting his remote.

Yeah, when Slava gives some backstory on Valery to Tony, its clear Valery is battling some demons, and you can see it on Valery's face in this scene. And yet he still offers them drinks like you said and is pretty pleasant until Paulie keeps pushing his buttons.

Valero always had the makings of a varsity interior decorator.

Money was on the entertainment system. All they had to do was pick it up and leave. But no Paulie has to be a jerk. Its even sadder when you realise how much Slava loved Valery and that Valery was a war hero, where Paulie was mostly a selfish, entitled jerk.

Valery got the last laugh. He threw them a few hits with a shovel, got them lost in the woods all night and stole the caddy. They’re lucky he didn’t kill them both & go back to Russia

that percussion at the beginning gave this scene a very Twin Peaks vibes.

2:05 honestly in hindsight, valery was lucky it was paulie who came to collect the money instead of vito when he asked this question

Paulie and Christopher are like Dumb and Dumber but instead of stupid they're stupid and emotional. I tell myself Valery survived this encounter and laughs about the two hotheaded guidos while driving drunk in the car Paulie liked so much.

I'm glad Christopher is so responsible with substance abuse and even has the best interests of Valery at heart by telling him it was too early to drink.

Valery woukd have been an awesome Bond villain and to be honest, he shoukd have had more screen time in the sopranos.
